Please join me in wishing Linda Nye all the best in her new career! In response to the University’s Strategic Plan, Linda has successfully created and implemented a new and profitable revenue stream for Messiah University by increasing our offsite catering business by over 50% annually. Since 2008, Linda’s dedicated servant leadership and operational vision has been instrumental and vital in elevating our catering services program. Kenji Kanazawa has been promoted to the catering manager position in Dining Services and we look forward to his leadership and continued development of our catering department. Congratulations to both!

Congratulations to Philip Tan, assistant professor of engineering, and his wife, Julia, on the arrival of their first child, Joel Trevelyan Tan, on Aug. 5. Joel weighed 7 lbs., 5 oz. and was 19.5 inches.

Registrar’s Office welcomes new employees

The Registrar’s Office welcomed two new employees this summer – Olivia Warner, records and registration assistant; and Ed Wichrowski, senior associate registrar for the School of Graduate Studies.

Olivia’s first day at Messiah was July 6. Her office is located in Old Main Registrar’s Office. Olivia graduated from Geneva College this past May with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Languages, Biblical Studies and Linguistics.

Ed’s first day at Messiah was Aug. 3. His office is located in the administrative suite at Winding Hill. Ed comes to Messiah with 10 years of Enrollment Management and Registrar’s Office experience at Eastern Nazarene College.

Finance major added to CMT Academic Partner Program

The Department of Business is pleased to announce that the finance major has been accepted by the Chartered Market Technicians (CMT) Association as part of its Academic Partner Program. The CMT credential is the preeminent, global designation for practitioners of technical analysis and Institutions in the Academic Partner Program demonstrate academic excellence in the teaching of behavioral finance to portfolio management and other key aspects of technical analysis. Students in the finance major will receive scholarships to take the CMT exams and will now have the ability to pursue both their CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and CMT charters. The principal contact for this program is Dwayne Safer, CFA, CAIA.

New graduate assistants at Messiah and Partner Institutions

The Graduate Program in Higher Education is pleased to welcome 11 new graduate assistants for the 2020-2021 academic year both on the Messiah University campus and at partner institutions. Graduate assistantships offer graduate students the opportunity to put the educational theories gained through classroom instruction into professional practice through supervised, real-world experience. Our graduate assistantship program aims to provide an innovative and cost-efficient way to advance departmental and university-wide goals and objectives.

State of the University Address

The inaugural State of the University address will be delivered by President Kim Phipps via livestream on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 9:30 a.m. during the regularly scheduled Chapel time. All faculty and staff are warmly invited to tune in by visiting the livestream link at the President’s Office website. As per usual, the written transcript of the President’s address and the accompanying presentation, including a new companion document to the address, will be posted in the days just following the speech for your reference. Thank you for making time in your schedule for this important message and the start of our new year together!

Community pastor announcement

As we consider Christian faith formation and discipleship on campus in 2020/21, Doug Curry and Mina Choi will be giving leadership to a variety of programs and opportunities for students. Since large gatherings will not be possible, the chapel requirement will be waived. Yet, in order to maintain spiritual vitality on campus, Campus Ministries plans to offer the following programs and resources to encourage personal and communal spiritual disciplines:

1. Each Tuesday the Campus Ministries team will launch an online chapel experience, on Thursday a podcast with community members reflecting on the chapel message will launch and during chapel time several online six-week chapel series options will continue to be offered. Each Monday President Phipps will provide a devotional for the community, on Wednesday student ministry leaders will provide a devotional, and on Friday the devotional will be expressed through the arts. Be sure to check your weekly email for links to these offerings.

2. Life Groups, Bible study groups, and prayer ministries will be offered – both in-person and virtually – by student ministry leaders from Men’s Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Prayer Outreach Team, and the Logos Ministry Team. These discipleship-based ministries will forge intentional relationships with spiritual accountability, and nurture our students to grow in Biblical literacy and spiritual formation. Students will have the option to sign up for any of these groups individually, or by Residence Hall/Apartment floors to be led and mentored by Student Ministries leaders.

3. Campus Ministries will craft a resource center within FalconLink to provide further discipleship and Christian faith formation resources. This resource center will provide tools for student leaders, employees, and students seeking to explore pathways for continued growth and/or mentoring, and for community members to express prayer concerns and requests for pastoral counseling.

4. Students will be encouraged to get involved with local churches that verify compliance with the University’s risk reduction measures and health practices. This listing will also include streaming options for which our students can participate remotely. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate church bus or van transportation at this time so students will need to coordinate their own transportation. This information has been communicated to local congregations.

In addition, in the absence of a Campus Pastor this year, Stephen Gallaher has agreed to fulfill a one year temporary position as community pastor, primarily serving the spiritual needs of employees. In this role he will…

-Provide regular times of prayer and short devotional for employees. This will be delivered virtually.
-Provide time and space for individual meetings with employees who seek pastoral care. [Email – CommunityPastor@messiah.edu]

PA Student Employee of the Year

Back in April, Rebecca Lauver ’20 was announced as Pennsylvania’s Student Employee of the Year! Rebecca (biology major) served for two years as the biodiversity coordinator in the Office of Sustainability where she managed a multi-year reforestation project planting more than 600 trees in partnership with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Her award-winning work helped secure a job with the Alliance for the Chesapeake where she will carry out her passion and skillset in conservation around central Pennsylvania. Many thanks to the Student Employment team for selecting Rebecca and the Office of Sustainability to represent Messiah.
