Professors Anne Reeve, Alison Noble and Rick Schaeffer, along with four students, recently traveled to the spring 2015 National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Denver, March 22-26. Alison Noble chaired a session entitled, “Overcoming Obstacles in Student Learning in Physical Chemistry” and presented two talks: “Preparing Students for Effective Engagement in Group Problem Solving” and “How Is the Fluorescence Spectrum of a Pyrene Excimer Related to its Thermodynamics Properties? A Guided Inquiry Approach.” Rick Schaeffer presented a talk, “The Natural Science Capstone Course at Messiah College: A Holistic Interdisciplinary Approach.” Students Phil Roth and Lauren Martin presented their research, mentored by Anne Reeve, in a poster presentation: “Synthesis and Purification of Aspernigrin A Analogs.” Sarah Zwart, mentored by Alison Noble, presented her research in a poster presentation: “Characterization of Self-Assembled Monolayers on Zinc Selenide.” Anna Noble, currently mentored by Alison Noble, presented her research from last summer at the Cleveland Clinic, entitled “Effects of Sphingosine 1-Phosphate at the Blood-Brain Barrier.”

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is pleased to announce its recent addition to the list of colleges and universities approved by the American Chemical Society. This achievement marks the program as one of excellence, and allows students in chemistry and biochemistry, who follow a specific degree path, to obtain degrees certified by the society. This achievement culminates many years of hard work, two significant self-studies and a site visit during this past fall semester. We are very excited! Please pass the word to any prospective students who might be interested in studying chemistry or biochemistry!

On Wednesday, April 15, Bob Madden of Messiah College Press accepted the 2015 Impression Award for Collaborative Service on behalf of the entire campus. The award is presented each year by the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP) for a significant institutional collaboration yielding a positive outcome. Messiah receives this honor in recognition for the collaborative spirit in which all employees approached the implementation of consolidating our campus printer and copier fleets last year during prioritization. Without the hard work and support of Learning Technology Services, College Press, and the entire campus community this accomplishment would not have been possible. Other contenders for the award included California State University in Sacramento, Harper College, University of Nebraska, Yale, and University California Davis. The award will be on display in Hoffman Building lobby until June 30.

Please welcome two new members of the Registrar’s Office:

Hilary Hoover, assistant registrar. Hilary is a 2002 graduate of Messiah College and she earned her Master’s Degree from Temple University. Hilary replaces Paula Maynard who is the associate registrar for graduate programs. She comes to us from her previous role as a program director for Catholic Charities, Harrisburg. As the assistant registrar, Hilary’s primary duties include the certification for all undergraduate degree candidates. Hilary, her husband Matthew ’02 and their daughter Madelyn reside in Harrisburg.

Laura Julius, administrative assistant to the registrar and coordinator of student retention, replaces Peg Beckley who retired at the end of February. Laura earned her undergraduate degree at Penn State University. She will complete her Messiah College Master’s degree in Higher Education next month. For the past two years, Laura has served as the graduate assistant for student retention. Laura’s primary duties include support for student retention initiatives and providing service to students and faculty as a team member of the Registrar’s Office. Laura and her husband Collin reside in Dover, Pa.


Peace Lecturer on campus today, April 23

Today, April 23 the Peace and Conflict Studies Program will welcome to campus Madeline McClenney-Sadler, founder and director of the Exodus Foundation. Rev. Dr. McClenney-Sadler is an advocate of restorative justice and reform of the U.S. criminal justice system, and her work with the Exodus Foundation specifically seeks to “stop the flow of African-Americans to prison.” For this work, she received a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2001. Madeline is an ordained Baptist minister and a graduate of Howard University Divinity School and Duke University (PhD in Old Testament Studies).

Rev. Dr. McClenney-Sadler will preach in common chapel, and she will lead an alternate chapel at 7 p.m. in Frey 110. An informal time to meet and talk with Madeline over lunch (bring your own) is planned between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 the Larsen Student Union Conference Room.

12th Annual Symposium to be held May 1

The 12th Annual Symposium of the School of Science, Engineering and Health will be held on Friday, May 1 in Frey, Jordan and Kline academic buildings. More than 150 students from within the school will participate in oral and poster presentations in sessions that are scheduled throughout the day. A detailed schedule and program is available on the Symposium website found here. Celebrate the work, creativity and innovation reflected in the rich and diverse variety of oral and poster presentations. Many presentations will describe basic or applied research projects and represent the culmination of months (or years) of effort by graduating seniors. A number of presentations will highlight how talents and resources are being used to address needs in the developing world. Plan to join us to celebrate the accomplishments of the students!

Retirement Reception planned for May 4

The School of the Humanities and the School of Science, Engineering and Health invite you to a celebration in honor of Jim Gustafson, Larry Lake, Kate Quimby and Spud Wentzell. The retirement reception will be held on Monday, May 4 from 3- 5 p.m. in the Howe Atrium in Boyer Hall. Jim Gustafson, associate professor of health and human performance, has served faithfully at Messiah College for 42 years. Larry Lake, associate professor of writing, is retiring after 31 years. Kate Quimby, senior lecturer in Humanities, is finishing 30 years. Spud Wentzell, professor of health and physical education has given 26 years. We invite you to attend and join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these fine educators.

Join us May 6th at the Employee Recognition Reception 

Please join us on Wednesday, May 6, as we gather to celebrate the commitment of those employees who have reached significant service milestones. This year’s Employee Recognition Reception will be held from 10 a.m.-noon in Brubaker Auditorium. We will have a time of refreshments and fellowship until 10:20 a.m., accompanied by The Brass Messengers. Conveying of awards will follow. In addition to recognizing service milestones, we will also be announcing the recipients of the Pride in Performance, the President’s Awards, and the Team Falcon Award. BJ’s open enrollment ends on April 30

BJ’s will no longer accept early/late applications so please check expiration dates. The next open enrollment will be held in October 2015. If a membership is set to expire prior to October 2015, it must be renewed now. Please note that when renewing prior to the expiration date, ALL extra months are added onto the length of the membership, no months are ever lost. Fifteen (15) month Inner Circle Membership – $40 ($10 savings and three additional months); 15 month Rewards Membership – $80 ($20 savings and three additional months). Host families needed

American Home Life International is looking for Christian families interested in hosting international students for the 2015-2016 academic year. These high school students will be studying at one of three local schools, and transportation to and from school would be provided. Host families are given a generous monthly stipend to offset any cost of hosting these students. Host families are able to preference a male or female student, if needed. For more information regarding this ministry please contact David Downey at
