Make Plans to Attend the Movie on the Green

Human Resources is once again partnering with the Agapé Center and Student Involvement and Leadership Programs to host an outdoor movie event. Pixar’s Inside Out will be showing on a 40’ tall screen on Friday, Sept. 18 on Eisenhower Lawn at 7:30 p.m. Coinciding with Family Weekend, this event is open to all employees and their families as well as students and their families. More information will follow in next week’s Intercom. Mark your calendar!

After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions—joy, fear, anger, disgust and sadness—conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Lenovo “Tiny” computers in Classrooms

Throughout the summer, ITS has upgraded all the teacher stations with brand new Lenovo PCs. These PCs are very compact and fast compared to what we previously had in classrooms. Since they are so much smaller, we have actually been receiving calls that they cannot be located, so we wanted to share these pictures, located in this blog article (http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/6255) and some additional information regarding these new PCs.

The new PCs are located in the same spot where the old computers were in classrooms. However, due to their size, we have found that they are sometimes missed or assumed to be some equipment other than a computer.

They have two USB ports in the front for easy access if you need to use a USB drive. If you find the need to reboot the PC, make sure you remove any USB drives as this will prevent the PC from rebooting properly. The connection for the audio is also in the front, so you will note that an audio cable will be plugged in there as well. Please do not disconnect it as this will stop sound from playing through the speakers in the room.

Lastly, these new computers do NOT have a DVD drive. Therefore, if you need to use a DVD drive for any reason in class and do not have a laptop that has one, you will need to contact HelpDesk or via the Loaner Equipment Form to borrow one.

We hope you will find these new PCs a vast improvement over what was previously available in our classrooms. However, if you do have your own laptop, we do highly recommend that you bring and use that in class as it will always be the fastest, most reliable way to get your classes running on time and smoothly.

If you have any questions\concerns, please contact the Help Desk at ext. 4444 or by e-mailing helpdesk@messiah.edu.

Mentor a First Generation, First-Year Student

Following the campus-wide viewing of the documentary film, “First Generation,” we received positive feedback from faculty and staff noting that the film did much to raise their awareness of the barriers these students face. For many of these students, the landscape of the college campus with its rules, policies, deadlines and expectations can be intimidating. To help our First Gens successfully navigate their first year of college, we invite YOU to “adopt” a student to mentor. We are looking to recruit faculty and staff to match with each of our entering first generation, first-year students. This commitment will require a couple of hours of your time each month. Taking the time to connect with the student over a meal or coffee each month, with perhaps a handwritten note of encouragement now and again, could make a big difference in a young person’s first year of college. If you are interested in participating as a mentor volunteer, please email Laura Julius, administrative assistant to the registrar/coordinator of student retention ljulius@messiah.edu.
