 MESSIAH 411

Thank you for your kindness
Thank you so very much for the overwhelming support from the entire Messiah College family during the darkest hours surrounding the death of our Emily. Words can’t begin to express how touched our family was by your prayers and presence in our lives the past several weeks. We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of love and support from Messiah.

To Mark Wirtz and the Dining Services Department: Thank you for providing all the wonderful food. Your thoughtfulness represented “Jesus feeding the 5,000” when our home was loaded with guests and school students. A special thank you to Kathie Shafer, Vice President of Operations, for closing the physical plant during the funeral service. We realized it was probably the busiest time for maintenance during student move-in week. It meant so much to see so many of my friends attending the funeral. We would also like to thank the operations employees for the beautiful flowers. To the Athletics Department, Facility Services and “Colleagues at Messiah College:” Thank you for the flower arrangements sent to the church. To the Physical Plant Employees, Old Main Employees, Swim Team, Women’s Lacrosse Team and others that contributed monetary donations to our family and to our church: We are totally speechless over the amazing generosity extended to us.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

~ Patrick Groft and family

An evening with journalist and author Bob Woodward

One of America’s preeminent investigative reporters and nonfiction authors, Bob Woodward, will be speaking at Messiah College on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Parmer Hall of the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performance. Mr. Woodward has worked for The Washington Post since 1971 as a reporter and is currently an associate editor there. As a young reporter in 1972, Woodward was teamed up with Carl Bernstein. The two did much, but not all, of the original news reporting of the Watergate scandal that led to numerous government investigations and the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon. Gene Roberts, former managing editor of The New York Times, has called the work of Woodward and Bernstein “maybe the single greatest reporting effort of all time.”

Woodward has authored or coauthored 16 nonfiction books in the last 36 years. All 16 have been national best-sellers and 12 of them have been #1 national nonfiction best-sellers — more #1 national nonfiction best-sellers than any contemporary author. General admission tickets are $25. Student tickets (with ID) are $10. To purchase, please contact the Messiah College Ticket Office at 717-691-6036 or visit messiah.edu/tickets.

Autumn Hazards

Although the change in season brings unique beauty to the world around us, it also brings unique safety hazards. Be aware:

AS YOU WORK OUTSIDE– Fall planting and pruning, harvesting and house maintenance (ex., cleaning rainspouts, washing windows, etc.) expose you to increased safety hazards.

  • If ladders are used, you should be aware of precautions you need to take; review Section 13 of the Messiah College Safety Manual for Ladder Safety tips.
  • Pest control, stinging insects and exposure to ticks are very real concerns. Watch out for hidden nests; wear clothing to protect your arms and legs; wear hats and boots; use insect repellent. When finished with your work, shower and inspect yourself for ticks and bites.
  • Power tools such as chain saws have inherent safety hazards. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s manual for any power tool you are using. Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. For chainsaws, OSHA provides a tip sheet on safety.

AS YOU START UP THE USE OF HEATING SYSTEMS Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that can be DEADLY. It’s produced by burning wood and wood by-products, natural gas, propane and kerosene fuels and coal. Be sure your furnaces, wood stoves and space heaters are cleaned properly for the season. Don’t forget chimney cleaning to remove creosote build-up which can cause house fires.

CHANGES IN WEATHER introduce new safety hazards!

  • Sudden storms can make driving difficult, reducing visibility and increasing the potential for slippery roads. Debris in the roadway can occur from fallen limbs and trees. Even wet leaves can present slippery driving conditions.
  • Power outages may occur. When generators are used to provide power during storms, remember that carbon monoxide is a very real danger. Be sure you are familiar with your generator, how to use it safely and where to locate it to prevent the build-up of carbon monoxide in the home.

SCHOOLS ARE BACK IN SEASON This means school buses are on the roads and so are school children. Know the laws around school bus safety and follow them. Watch out for children walking to and from schools and to and from bus stops, especially in those early morning hours before total daylight.

FLUIt’s that time of year—the start of flu season. Be sure you get vaccinated against the flu as soon as possible.

Remember to keep safety in mind so that you can enjoy the crisp autumn air, the leaves changing colors, the pumpkins and apple picking…injury free!

New Tool for Potential Class Use and Student Assessment
The Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) would like to introduce faculty to a new tool that you might find helpful in your classes and/or for assessment of student learning. “InterviewStream” is a web-based video interface that allows students to practice for an interview, rehearse an elevator pitch or improve their public speaking. Students respond to a series of pre-recorded interview questions from their computer. They can review their own responses, but these can also be shared with CPDC staff and faculty. We have already worked with a few faculty members to create their own accounts and use this tool for a course assignment. Faculty may customize questions, review student responses at their convenience and provide feedback. On Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. in Boyer 222, we will demo the InterviewStream technology for anyone interested. If you would like to attend the short 30-minute demo, please e-mail Dwayne Keiffer at dkeiffer@messiah.edu to RSVP. Coffee and cookies will be provided. Fun Fact: Did you know the Messiah College HR department uses InterviewStream to perform their initial screening of job candidates at Messiah College?

Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 13-19

Just Drive PA website offers the following reminders on child passenger safety:

Birth-12 Months: Your child under age 1 should always ride in a rear-facing car seat.

1-3 Years: Keep your child rear-facing as long as possible. It’s the best way to keep him or her safe. Your child should remain in a rear-facing car seat until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the rear-facing car seat, your child is ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness.

4-7 Years: Keep your child in a forward-facing car seat with a harness until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the forward-facing car seat with a harness, it’s time to travel in a booster seat, but still in the back seat.

8-12 Years: Keep your child in a booster seat until he or she is big enough to fit in a seat belt properly. For a seat belt to fit properly the lap belt must lie snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach. The shoulder belt should lie snug across the shoulder and chest and not cross the neck or face. Remember: your child should still ride in the back seat because it’s safer there.

Car Seat Selection and Use: Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size, and choose a seat that fits in your vehicle. Always refer to your specific car seat manufacturer’s instructions; read the vehicle owner’s manual on how to install the car seat using the seat belt or LATCH system; and check height and weight limits. To maximize safety, keep your child in the car seat for as long as possible, as long as the child fits within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements. Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12.

REQUEST TO SUPPORT CONFERENCE AND EVENT SERVICES

Conference and Event Services office along with Campus Events works hard to meet all the requests of the campus community.  Over the past several years there has been an increase in requests for events during dates and times that either conflict with other institutional events, or because of the size or needs of the event, they cannot be supported.  In an effort to provide the best level of service possible, events and services (requiring the assistance of conference and events services) will be limited on the dates listed below and under the following circumstances.

These dates/events include:

  1. Community Day – only events that do not require set up or tech support will be approved until the completion of Community Day activities.
  2. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Fall Welcome Week (FWW) – All activities related to COE day and FWW are supported.  Any other requests cannot be supported if they need set up or tech support.
  3. Friday and Saturday of Messiah College Christmas (except for wrestling tournament).  Any other requests cannot be supported if they need set up or tech support.
  4. Service Day – no activities permitted to be scheduled between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., evening activities only if no set up and tech support is required.
  5. Reading Day and Employee Recognition service – No activities permitted between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. except employee recognition service.
  6. Friday and Saturday of Commencement – Activities need to be related to Board of Trustee meetings, Nursing Pinning, Baccalaureate and Commencement only.

Thank you for your understanding as we continue to manage staffing and resources.  As always, it is best to plan early for all your events on campus.

Lenovo “Tiny” computers in Classrooms

Throughout the summer, ITS has upgraded all the teacher stations with brand new Lenovo PCs. These PCs are very compact and fast compared to what we previously had in classrooms. Since they are so much smaller, we have actually been receiving calls that they cannot be located, so we wanted to share these pictures, located in this blog article (http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/6255) and some additional information regarding these new PCs.

The new PCs are located in the same spot where the old computers were in classrooms. However, due to their size, we have found that they are sometimes missed or assumed to be some equipment other than a computer.

They have two USB ports in the front for easy access if you need to use a USB drive. If you find the need to reboot the PC, make sure you remove any USB drives as this will prevent the PC from rebooting properly. The connection for the audio is also in the front, so you will note that an audio cable will be plugged in there as well. Please do not disconnect it as this will stop sound from playing through the speakers in the room.

Lastly, these new computers do NOT have a DVD drive. Therefore, if you need to use a DVD drive for any reason in class and do not have a laptop that has one, you will need to contact HelpDesk or via the Loaner Equipment Form to borrow one.

We hope you will find these new PCs a vast improvement over what was previously available in our classrooms. However, if you do have your own laptop, we do highly recommend that you bring and use that in class as it will always be the fastest, most reliable way to get your classes running on time and smoothly.

If you have any questions\concerns, please contact the Help Desk at ext. 4444 or by e-mailing helpdesk@messiah.edu.

Mentor a First Generation, First-Year Student

Following the campus-wide viewing of the documentary film, “First Generation,” we received positive feedback from faculty and staff noting that the film did much to raise their awareness of the barriers these students face. For many of these students, the landscape of the college campus with its rules, policies, deadlines and expectations can be intimidating. To help our First Gens successfully navigate their first year of college, we invite YOU to “adopt” a student to mentor. We are looking to recruit faculty and staff to match with each of our entering first generation, first-year students. This commitment will require a couple of hours of your time each month. Taking the time to connect with the student over a meal or coffee each month, with perhaps a handwritten note of encouragement now and again, could make a big difference in a young person’s first year of college. If you are interested in participating as a mentor volunteer, please email Laura Julius, administrative assistant to the registrar/coordinator of student retention ljulius@messiah.edu.

SCHOOLS ARE BACK IN SESSION

Schools will soon be back in session across the state and that means school buses will be on the roads and children will be walking along the streets. Keep these safety tips in mind as you are driving:

  • Always follow the speed limits and slow down in school zones and near bus stops.
  • Stay alert for children getting on and off buses, and walking to and from bus stops and schools.
  • Be familiar with Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law and comply with it:
    • Motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
    • Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped.
    • Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety.
    • If physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in the opposing lanes may proceed without stopping. This is the only time a motorist does not have to stop for a stopped school bus.
    • Do not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety.

The penalties if convicted of violating Pennsylvania´s School Bus Stopping Law include:

  • $250 fine
  • Five points on your driving record
  • 60-day license suspension
  • A lifetime of regret if a child is injured!

If you are interested in participating as a mentor volunteer, please email Laura Julius, administrative assistant to the registrar/coordinator of student retention at ljulius@messiah.edu.

On Thursday, August 6, Carole Hutchison completed a month long, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) training course. The classes Carole took were offered to her as an employee of Messiah College Press because the Press is an FSC Certificate Holder. The FSC is an international organization that promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests. Carole’s training was based on requirements for use of the FSC and Rainforest Alliance trademarks. When FSC is requested at the time a print or copy order is placed, these logos can be proudly displayed on the printed items. This will show everyone that the piece was produced on environmentally sound material and will encourage others to do the same. Please join us in congratulating Carole for her hard work in completing this important training.

Approved Driver Status
As a reminder, the fleet policy states that employees must re-apply every two years to be eligible to drive college-owned fleet, pool, leased or rented vehicles. This is the first time under this revised policy that employees must reapply every two years. Please be sure to read the entire policy: http://www.messiah.edu/documents/safety/Driving%20Services/VehicleManagementPOLICY&Addendum-08-2014.pdfEmployee renewal example: if you were approved on September 6, 2013, your renewal would need to be completed by or before September 6, 2015. If you are not currently on the approved driver list you cannot drive college vehicles or rent vehicles for college business. All information, including the driver list and approved driver dates is available on the safety department’s website. You will be responsible to know when you need to re-apply for approved driver status. http://www.messiah.edu/offices/safety/safety-training-office/college-fleet-services.html

Vaccinations

Do you know what vaccinations your child should have? Do you know what vaccinations are recommended for you? Do you know who should and who should not receive specific vaccinations? Information on vaccines can be found on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website. For some quick references, here are CDC publications for specific ages: Birth to 6 years of age; 7 to 18 years of age; 19 and older; and school immunization requirements for Pennsylvania.

In addition, potential for exposure and employment responsibilities may impact the vaccinations recommended for adults. Always consult with your physician for vaccination schedules and requirements specific for you and your family members. Be sure your physician or health care professional knows your potential for exposure to help insure you are receiving the vaccinations that are appropriate for you. Health insurances may cover the cost of all or many of these vaccines

Radiation Safety Program

A new section has been added to the Messiah College Safety Manual. Section 24, Radiation Safety Program, documents the safety practices and compliance policies in place for radiation sources used on campus. It is important if you work with any radiation producing equipment that you read this section. If you are contemplating the introduction of any new radiation producing equipment or radiation sources to campus, you must first contact the campus Radiation Safety Officer (Steven Funck).

Messiah College Press has received notification that its Forest Stewardship Council® Chain-of-Custody Certification has been renewed for the next twelve months. Financial Operations: Student Financial Services and Falcon Exchange Update

After more than 12 years of committed service to students and colleagues, Marilyn Donelson retired as director of student financial services/bursar on June 30. In addition to overseeing the Student Financial Services and Falcon Exchange office operations, among Marilyn’s many accomplishments was the creation of a student-focused service delivery model.  In continuation of this model, the director of student financial services/bursar position was redefined into two components.  We were fortunate to have two strong service-oriented team members—Cathy Poiesz and Lora Harper—to promote into these redefined roles.  I look forward to working directly with both Cathy Poiesz and Lora Harper and feel this new structure will allow us to further focus and enhance our support to students and campus colleagues.

A summary of service areas for each position is below:

  • Cathy Poiesz – director of student financial services:   In this new role, Cathy will manage and oversee the Student Financial Services office, including the billing, monitoring of student receivables, and payment outreach for enrolled graduate and undergraduate students. Additionally, Cathy will develop and implement practices to counsel enrolled students on student account and financial matters as well as coordinate student financial services with other campus departments.
  • Lora Harper – manager of financial services:  Lora Harper will be responsible for the recordkeeping and deposit of payments to Messiah College, including the reconciliation of the College’s student and other accounts receivable, the billing and collection of non-student revenues, as well as supporting eCommerce efforts. Lora is also responsible for managing the daily activities and related internal control processes of the Falcon Exchange which includes cashiering and deposit services, ID card and student parking administration.

Although the Falcon Exchange will be separate and distinct from the Student Financial Services department, the offices will continue to work closely together as part of the ACCESS model of student service.  To learn more about the ACCESS model which is designed to assist students in overcoming financial challenges, please see the attached.

CAPITAL BLUE CROSS SUMMARY OF BENEFITS AND COVERAGE (SBC) FOR MESSIAH COLLEGE MEDICAL PLANS

As part of the health care reform law, the government established a new health plan information document called the Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC). The SBC will help you understand the Messiah College medical plan options. It provides an overview in a standard format and is written in easy-to-understand language.

The Summary of Benefits and Coverage includes three parts:

  • Benefits and coverage information
  • Coverage examples
  • Directions for access to a Uniform Glossary

Benefits and Coverage Information

This section includes a chart that lists the main features of your medical plan. It answers fundamental questions about the coverage levels of the plan options. It also provides specific information about coverage for different services, such as office visits, prescription drugs and emergency room services.

Coverage Examples

The SBC explains how to access or request a glossary with definitions for common health insurance and medical terms, such as copayment and deductible. There may be differences between terms found in the Uniform Glossary and those in our health plan document.

Attached are the Summary of Benefits and Coverage for the three Messiah College medical plans.
