Members of the Community of Educators should have already received information from the Provost’s Office regarding their participation in Commencement weekend. Faculty, staff and administrators who are participating in the Commencement ceremony itself should have already received a memo regarding their role in the ceremony from the President’s Office.

If you have any questions regarding Commencement, please contact Carla Gross, co-chair of the Commencement Committee, at ext. 6940 or cgross@messiah.edu. Thank you to all campus employees who have been planning and working for the past several months to make Commencement a wonderful experience for graduates and their families.

Baccalaureate service/reception parking

Prior to the Baccalaureate service and reception, traffic personnel will direct guests to designated parking areas on campus. College employees do not receive reserved parking for Baccalaureate. Please note that Baccalaureate is a ticketed event; see the Commencement web site for details. The Department of Safety asks that all guests walk from where traffic control personnel direct you to park. Shuttle service will not be provided Friday evening. To avoid safety hazards, please do not stop in the middle of the roadway to drop off your party. If you have questions regarding parking or drop-off locations for guests with a disability, please contact Parking Officer Liz Williams at ext. 3984.

Graduate programs reception parking

Graduate programs faculty attending the reception for master’s program graduates on Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel, are requested to enter by the campus’ South Entrance (Creekside Drive) and park in Lot XX behind Hostetter Chapel and Boyer Hall. No parking pass is required.

Commencement day parking

For Commencement day, members of the Community of Educators and other employees who are marching in the processional or participating in the Commencement ceremony will receive a reserved parking pass via campus mail. Employees MUST show their parking pass to traffic control personnel upon entering campus in order to be directed to their designated reserved parking areas. All other employees who will be working the Commencement ceremony should ask their supervisor where their designated parking area will be that day. A shuttle service will transport all other guests between their parking areas and the athletic complex both before and after the Commencement ceremony. Read additional details on guest and disability parking.

Due to the significantly increased volume of traffic on campus for Commencement, the Department of Safety strong encourages all employees to arrive on campus early (no later than 8-8:15 a.m.) in order to alleviate being stuck in traffic and to help ensure they are directed to their reserved parking areas on campus.

Any questions regarding parking for Commencement weekend may be directed to Parking Officer Liz Williams at ext. 3984.

SKIN CANCER – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

EHS Today had an excellent article, “Seeing Spots: What You Need to Know about Skin Cancer” by Sandy Smith. The article had a – examples of skin cancer. Although it can be deadly, most skin cancer is treatable, especially if you catch it early. Monthly self-exams can go a long way in identifying skin cancer for early treatment but you need to know what you’re looking for; so while some of these pictures may be unpleasant, take the time to view them to educate yourself on signs of skin cancer.

And because one of the leading causes of skin cancer is UV exposure from the sun, sun lamps, and tanning beds, in many instances skin cancer is preventable. By limiting your exposure through the use of sun screen, clothing and hats, and eliminating the use of man-made sources you can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. With spring here, time spent outside working and playing will increase; take the proper precautions to protect yourself from the threat of skin cancer.

TRADITION MEETS TOMORROW

Tradition meets Tomorrow. As employees, we have a longstanding tradition of investing in both current and future Messiah College students. Because of your generosity, we have many alumni who earned their Messiah College degree. If each employee gives as little as $2.50 per paycheck, we will raise over $50,000 for the Messiah Annual Fund. It’s easy to give through the Payroll Deduction Program. Please return the employee giving response card you received to Beth Clark, Suite 3013. Join your colleagues and support the Messiah Annual Fund. “I give to Messiah College because I see on a daily basis young people who desperately want to earn their Messiah College degree, but need help to afford it. While I cannot give a lot, I know I have been a small part of a wonderful group who works hard to make their dreams come true.”- Jill E. Poole ’81, transfer records specialist, Registrar. Every gift, like every employee, is important. For more information, please contact Beth Trott Clark, director of annual giving, at bclark@messiah.edu or x3953.

NOISE MEASUREMENTS

Under 29 CFR 1910.95, OSHA’s Standard for Occupational Noise, we are required to measure the sound level emissions from noise sources to determine if hearing protection is required (or to prove that it is not needed). If you have any equipment in your area that was added in the past year that produces noise at a significant level* please contact Donna Fink to have a sound level measurement taken. Even if this equipment is similar to equipment already tested for noise in the past, a sound level check must be taken as noise emissions can vary slightly from one machine to another of the same make and model. Measurements must be made “under load” or normal use of the equipment. For example, a power drill may not sound loud when turned on, but when actually drilling into material (under load) it may generate high levels of noise. To contact Donna for these measurements, please call ext. 5038 or email dfink@messiah.edu.

* A significant noise level is one that makes it difficult to hear someone speaking to you at a normal volume (without raising their voice). If in doubt, please contact Donna.

This achievement marks the program as one of excellence, and allows students in chemistry and biochemistry, who follow a specific degree path, to obtain degrees certified by the society. Please pass the word to any prospective students who might be interested in studying chemistry or biochemistry!

On Wednesday, April 15, Bob Madden of Messiah College Press accepted the 2015 Impression Award for Collaborative Service on behalf of the entire campus. The award is presented each year by the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP) for a significant institutional collaboration yielding a positive outcome. Messiah receives this honor in recognition for the collaborative spirit in which all employees approached the implementation of consolidating our campus printer and copier fleets last year during prioritization. Without the hard work and support of Learning Technology Services, College Press, and the entire campus community this accomplishment would not have been possible. Other contenders for the award included California State University in Sacramento, Harper College, University of Nebraska, Yale, and University California Davis. The award will be on display in Hoffman Building lobby until June 30.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Have you ever gotten in your car and started driving and ended up at your destination and couldn’t recall all the minutes during your drive? According to the National Safety Council, cognitively distracted drivers can miss up to 50 percent of their driving environment, including stop signs, pedestrians and red lights. And drivers talking on cell phones–handheld or hands-free—are four times more likely to crash. Focusing on anything other than driving–inclduing eating and drinking, reading a map, adjusting a radio, putting on make-up, or talking or texting on the phone while behind the wheel–can put you and others in serious danger. Stay alert and aware while behind the wheel. It could save your life or the life of someone you love.

Fall textbook responses due April 1

Undergrad and grad school fall 2015 textbook responses will be due Wednesday, April 1. If you are unable to submit your orders by this date for any reason, kindly contact Aleisha Wildon via email to provide a likely alternative submission date. On the Textbook Express’ web page we have now posted information that you may find helpful including: due dates for each term, textbook lists from previous semesters, a blank textbook requisition form and a faculty FAQ. See more details here.

Pre-filled textbook order forms will be emailed to your Messiah email address as soon as we receive notification from the registrar’s office that the course schedule has been finalized (on or about March 27). Printed forms will no longer be sent to you through campus mail.

The HEOA requires that colleges must, “to the maximum extent practicable,” make the textbook information for courses accessible to students by the point at which they register for that term. As orders are received from faculty, they will be vetted and posted online in a timely manner. Posted textbook information can be found here so that you can answer student inquiries easily.

Amy Cook, practicum and internship coordinator for the graduate program of counseling, recently represented Messiah College at the Qualtrics Insight Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Summit featured the most innovative thought leaders across the globe and an impressive assembly of speakers including best-selling author Stephen J. Dubner (“Freakonomics”), VP of the NY Mets Paul Depodesta (subject of “Moneyball”), and Investor Barbara Corcoran of “Sharktank.” If you are interested in networking about Qualtrics, Amy would like to hear from you. She can be reached at acook@messiah.edu.

Associate Professor of Marketing David Hagenbuch, with coauthors Steven Little and Doyle Lucas, recently had an article published in Business and Society Review (Vol. 120:1) titled “Beyond Association: How Employees Want to Participate in Their Firms’ Corporate Social Performance.” The article details a two-phase empirical study that the researchers conducted over several years, which involved more than 2,200 respondents from around the nation. The study elucidated three distinct approaches to corporate social performance (CSP): donation, volunteerism and operational integration. The researchers hypothesized that prospective employees would favor firms that take an operational integration approach to CSP by strategically aligning their financial and social goals. Surprisingly, however, the study found that respondents preferred the less strategic and less participatory approaches of volunteerism and donation. These findings raise important questions, particularly given that more and more firms embrace integrated economic and social missions.

Completing your 100 wellness points

Employees completing their 100 wellness points can also find the online completion form at the above link. The form can only be submitted once and cannot be saved.  Employees are encouraged to keep their own record as they accumulate wellness points, then submit the online completion form only after all 100 points have been completed. This form must be submitted by June 1, 2015 to be eligible for your health insurance premium discount.

Psychology Camp

The School of Business, Education and Social Sciences would like to announce the first annual Psychology Summer Camp, July 5-6, 2015.

This is a great way to introduce students to the world of psychology and explore the age old question “Why humans do what they do.”

This camp will be available to rising sophomore, junior and senior high school students. It will begin Sunday, July 5 and will run through Thursday, July 9. This enriching summer camp environment will help students gain knowledge and explore various branches of psychology including, clinical psychology, abnormal psychology and biopsychology.

Click here for more information and to register. Also visit our Facebook page.

Laser Safety

A new section has been added to the campus Safety Manual – a Laser Safety Program. Lasers are divided into classes, based on their power. The greater the number of the laser class, the greater the potential hazard. Currently, we have only class 1 and class 2 lasers on campus and no special precautions or programs are required. However, many additional requirements would need to be met before a class 3 or 4 laser could be introduced at the College. Anyone considering the use of a class 3 or 4 laser should read this new section and then contact the compliance coordinator before making any final decisions.

Hearing from potential employers or internship hosts?

If you are contacted by a representative of a business, non-profit organization, or government agency who may potentially provide internships or jobs to Messiah students, please have them touch base with the Career and Professional Development Center or visit messiah.edu/career.  I am happy to meet with, call or email them about ways to be engaged with our students.

Thank you for your help! Mike True
