PASCD, state affiliate of ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), a leading international nonprofit education leadership association, has selected Jennifer Fisler, director of teacher education and professor of education, for its 2016 class of emerging leaders. The PASCD Emerging Leaders program recognizes and prepares young, promising educators to influence education programs, policy and practice at the state level. This year’s leaders were invited to apply for the competitive program based on self-nominations and recommendations made by past program participants, current PASCD members, and the greater education community. An advisory panel reviewed and selected this year’s class. PASCD emerging leaders have typically been in the profession between five and 15 years, have a marked interest in making a positive contribution to education policy and practice, and have invested in professional growth opportunities aimed at improving student outcomes. The 2016 class is both professionally and regionally diverse, ranging from classroom teachers and administrators to higher education faculty and educational consultants.

Local laboratory hosts Messiah department
Chemical Solutions, a trace elemental testing laboratory in Harrisburg, hosted faculty and staff of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry on Aug. 26 at their facility for dinner, a tour and relationship-building. Seven Messiah graduates are employed by Chemical Solutions.
GO ED Africa / GO ED Mekong directors to visit campus Sept. 14-16
GO Ed Director Dr. Michael Pucci and Adele Pucci will be on campus to talk to students about studying with the GO ED Programs in Rwanda and Thailand. Into the City trip to Boston
Applications are now being accepted for the fall Into the City trip to Boston! This career immersion program will take place on Oct. 19-22, and promises students a high-impact, hands-on, educational experience through site visits, alumni panels and two networking receptions. Organizations represented on this trip include the Boston Red Sox, Social Fulcrum, Ocean Spray, Boston University, NiSource, Boston Medical Center, Roads Scholar, and more! Automatic software uninstall
ITS will be correcting the problem of the Zenworks popup login box on Thursday, Sept. 8. This pop-up sometimes occurs when you change your Windows password. This will be a silent (behind the scenes) uninstall on Windows computers. Please ensure you reboot your computer at the end of the day to help us complete this process. This process will occur when you are on campus only. This software is no longer used on campus and is not required on your computers. Please call the Helpdesk at ext. 4444 if you have any questions.
Teaching Tuesdays have begun
Teaching Tuesdays have begun and will run each Tuesdayfrom 9:30-10:15 a.m. in Boyer 131. The session for Sept. 13 will be a panel discussion on the topic of overcoming student beliefs such as “I can’t” or “This is too hard for me” that get in the way of their learning. Panelists include: Heather Dravk, Alison Noble and Carol Buckley. Check the Educator’s Calendar in Outlook or our website (www.messiah.edu/teachingandlearning) for future events.
September employee wellness workshop
Our September wellness workshop will be a cooking demonstration titled “Carb Conscious.” If you are counting your carbohydrates to manage blood sugars, for weight loss or other health reasons, this workshop is for you. A registered dietitian from Capital BlueCross will create a carbohydrate conscious recipe for participants to sample, while discussing the different types of carbohydrates in the diet and ways to control portions that are appropriate for everyone! The workshop will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 4 – 4:45 p.m. in Jordan 63 (the Foods Lab). There are still spots available, but space is limited. Anyone attending MUST sign up before Sept. 16, by emailing Doug Miller at dmiller@messiah.edu.
Group exercise opportunities
Looking for a way to add some exercise into your week, and to do it with some other employees? There are a number of different group exercise opportunities available this fall. Here’s the list:
- ZUMBA – Sundays, 4-5 p.m., Starts Sept. 18 until Nov. 20; meets in Brubaker
- YOGA – Wednesdays, 5-5:45 p.m., starts Sept. 14, runs 7 weeks; meets in SSC-166
- PILATES – Tuesdays, 12:15-1 p.m., starts Sept. 13, runs 7 weeks; meets in Brubaker
- RESISTANCE BAND TRAINING – Thursdays, 4:45-5:30 p.m., starts Sept.15, runs 7 weeks; meets in SSC-166
Each of the four group exercise classes has a $20 fee.
Participants must pre-register and pay the fee at the 2nd floor reception counter in the Larsen Student Union prior to the first class.
Falcon gymnastics kids program
The Falcon gymnastics program for kids is getting ready to “roll” on Sept. 15. Any faculty or staff (or friends) who have children interested in a fun, non-competitive gymnastics learning experience should contact Dar Miller at dkm276@hotmail.com. The 5-8 year-old class meets Thursdays from 7:30-8:30 p.m. The eight year-old and older class meets Thursdays from 8:30-9:30 p.m. The program runs from September to February, and all classes meet in the wrestling room in the Sollenberger Sports Center.
Alumni Film to be featured at Harrisburg-Hershey Film Festival
A film produced by Messiah alumni entitled “There Were Giants” will premiere during the 3 p.m. block of the Harrisburg-Hershey Film Festival on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Midtown Cinema in Harrisburg. The film documents the profound story of The Harrisburg Giants, the first Eastern Negro League baseball team to integrate in 1954. Produced in conjunction with the Center for Public Humanities Student Fellows Program, the documentary features interviews with former players and local historians that reveal the Giant’s true history of racial reconciliation in an era of segregation. Unused board games from your cupboards and closets! I would love to have a collection of board games in my residence hall lounge for residents to de-stress and make memories with.
