Online networking opportunity for students and alumni
The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month.

For the month of July, we are hosting the following networking receptions:

• Monday, July 24, noon-1:30 p.m. (Connecting alumni/students in the Washington D.C./Baltimore area), for alumni/seniors
• Friday, July 28, noon- 1:30 p.m. (Young Alumni), for alumni

After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. Safety in work zones
Road construction is everywhere and that means the potential for more accidents. In 2014, a total of 669 work zone fatalities and over 31,000 work zone injuries occurred. Did you know that almost 85% of work zone fatalities were motorists, not workers? Here are some safety tips to keep you and your passengers safe in work zone areas:
Keep your headlights on in a work zone. It’s the law.

• Always wear your seatbelt. It’s the law.
• Slow down. Reduce your speed and obey the work zone speed limits.
• Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe following distance. The largest number of traffic accidents in work zones are rear-end collisions.
• Obey road signs and be alert for flaggers.
• Stay focused and watchful. Distracted driving is never good, but it is even more dangerous in work zones. Watch for brake lights of vehicles in front of you and be prepared to react. Expect the unexpected. Use extreme caution when driving through a work zone at night, even if work is not being conducted.
• Give yourself enough travel time so you are prepared for the unexpected delays and be patient. Avoid work zones. Whenever possible, travel alternate routes.

Raeann Hamon and Erin Boyd-Soisson, from the Department of Human Development and Family Science, served as co-chairs for the 2017 Family Science Association’s (FSA) Teaching Family Science Conference in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Since FSA does not have any paid staff, Hamon and Boyd-Soisson were responsible for selecting and contracting a hotel, choosing meal menus and working with restaurants, booking Junkanoo rush performers, preparing and announcing a call for proposals, processing presentation submissions and developing a program, communicating with conference presenters and attendees, and all other logistics for the conference. A record number of participants attended the conference, so FSA accrued many new members as a result. Boyd-Soisson and Lori Smolleck also presented “Assessment of Toy Assignment” and Hamon (with Alexis Phillippi, HDFS ’17) presented “Evaluating a Family Life Education Methodology Course: Student Self-Assessment and Personal Reflections.”

A Collaboratory team returned on June 13 from Burkina Faso. Four projects were represented on this team: Prosthetic Knee for Burkina Faso; Aeroponics; Energy Monitoring and Management System (EMMS); and Mechanized Percussion Well Drilling (MPWD). These teams worked with Serving in Missions (SIM) and Open Door Development in the remote area of Mahadaga. Design as Service students Ha Sung Kang, Emily Worth and Stefanie Hadiwidjaja, as part of a five-person team of interdisciplinary, intercollegiate students, progressed to the final phase of the global transdisciplinary design competition, Wege, focused on solutions to environmental problems through sustainability and a circular economy. Professor Kathy T. Hettinga’s students collaborated with Grand Valley State Colleges natural resource students and the Design as Service non-profit client Damascus Citizen for Sustainability, which includes scientists Barbara Arrindell and Ted Auch. The MC team progressed to the final round in a field of teams representing 17 countries from China to the Netherlands to Zimbabwe. Several Department of Safety employees were honored with the Robert Bunker Award for Outstanding Performance at the 64th Annual Northeast Colleges and Universities Security Association conference on June 26 in Princeton, New Jersey. The Bunker Award is presented to an individual employed by a member institution’s security or police department who performed an act which exhibited a risk to life or safety in the course of his or her duties or who performed a life-saving action requiring the highest of professional conduct. NEWS:

The Development Office recently experienced a restructuring. Because of staffing changes, the following colleagues have new and/or expanded responsibilities.

Bob Feil has been promoted to director of prospect research and record compliance. While continuing his important work in the area of donor prospect research, Bob will serve as the liaison between the Development Office and the Business Office and the Development Office and IT.

Maria Sweeney-Rippon received a promotion to the coordinator of donor records. In this new position, she will be responsible for coordinating the comprehensive donor data record process, including retrieving reports on giving, compiling mailing lists, and preparing annual endowment reports, which includes coordinating the writing of thank you notes that student scholarship recipients send to donors.

Cady Sullivan has been promoted to the assistant director of annual giving, phonathon, and digital philanthropy. In her expanded role, Cady will continue in her good work related to annual giving and phonathon. In addition, she will become the key point person for online giving and related social media fundraising.

Beth Clark, director of annual giving, has generously agreed to add supervision of gift processing to her portfolio of duties. Since more than 80% of all gifts fall under the annual giving category, placing gift processing under the annual giving umbrella makes strategic sense.

Susan Mayernick now serves as a senior development officer and planned gift advisor. In this enhanced role, she will strengthen her focus on the Lancaster county area, as well as increase our collective efforts in planned giving.

Mark Templeton will continue in his role as the senior advancement representative and Heritage Society coordinator, but will now report directly to Bob Brown, director of planned and leadership gifts. In addition to cultivating the Bucks-Mont region (Bucks and Montgomery counties), Mark leads the efforts and activities of our Heritage Society, those donors who have included Messiah in their estate or deferred giving plans.

Pam Thomas, coordinator for gift processing, will now also serve as the administrative assistant for annual giving. In addition to serving as the key gift processor on campus, Pam will provide administrative support to the annual giving team. All donation checks should still be dropped off at Pam’s office, which will move from the McBeth Advancement Center to Old Main 334 later this summer.

Katie McComb has been hired as the new swim coach and aquatics director at Messiah College. Katie was an NCAA Division I swimmer at the University of North Carolina and has most recently been working as an assistant swim coach and communications manager at the Hershey Aquatic Club. Katie takes over the program from Nancy Luley who coached the Falcons for their first 9 years of competition. Kenya Collaboratory team

A Collaboratory team of six students and two advisors returned from Kenya on June 11. Two project teams, Rapid Orthotics for CURE Kenya (ROCK) and Cunningham Clubfoot Brace for Kids, worked with CURE International. ROCK successfully trained several local orthopedic technicians who will print custom prosthetics with the use of an iPad to scan patient limbs, software to modify the image to fit the individual and a 3D printer. The Clubfoot team participated in all aspects of Cure’s Clubfoot Care for Kenya and will use this information to 3D print Cunningham’s revolutionary brace and reduce costs. Nicaragua Collaboratory/AROMA team

A Collaboratory/AROMA team returned from Nicaragua on June 8. The Collaboratory Block Press team worked with partnering organization, Friends in Action (FIA). They successfully tested their prototype and made 24 test blocks. The project gained valuable information on the prototype, which will be used to develop a finished version. The team also managed to connect and learn about the Rama people and the community that they hope to serve in the future. Joshua Good (AROMA) and Thomas Soerens (engineering) advised the team, which included grad student Joseph Saufley and engineering students Brenden Good, Samuel Hsu, Jonathan Robinson and Brandon Shirk.

A Collaboratory team of five students and two advisors returned on June 10 from Zimbabwe. The Solar PV team installed a solar power system on two buildings at the Ekuphileni Bible Institute, where electricity has been very unreliable. Three Collaboratory students (Brianne Roper, Daniel Haas and Lily Gaudreau) of the Diagnostics for Viral Diseases (DVD) team traveled to Macha, Zambia with the BIOL218 Healthcare in the Developing World. May term course taught and lead by Phil Thuma (Johns Hopkins University and Messiah College), Larry Mylin (biological sciences) and Kay Witt (nutrition) to gain information that will aid in future design and direction of the Collab project. In addition to participating in the course, the three Collab students developed a better understanding of needs and limitations for development of appropriate cost effective and reliable diagnostic tests by observing ongoing research and development projects with Macha Research Trust Scientists, or Macha Mission Hospital technologists in laboratories during visits to rural health clinics.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor of Mathematics Amanda (‘Mandy’) Lohss who was recently accepted as a Project NExT Fellow by the Mathematical Association of America. Project NExT (new experiences in teaching) is a national and competitive professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. Fellows learn together about all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, finding exciting and interesting service opportunities, and participating in professional activities. As a fellow, Mandy will attend targeted professional development seminars at MAA national meetings in July 2017, January 2018, and July 2018. Mandy will be joining our faculty in fall 2017 in the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics.

The President’s Office is pleased to announce that Kaitlyn Gehris has accepted the position of executive assistant for the Office of the President. She worked as the administrative assistant for the Office of Human Resources and Compliance for the past year after graduating from Messiah College in 2016. During her four years as a student, Kaitlyn worked as the President’s Office student assistant. Kaitlyn will be responsible for managing the president’s schedule, coordinating events, assisting with presentations and providing President’s Office support. Melissa Cohen will continue in her role as executive assistant to the President and assistant to the Board of Trustees. Melissa manages Board of Trustees communication and oversees the ongoing maintenance of the College’s official documents and records.

A Collaboratory team of seven students and five advisors returned on June 1 from Oaxaca, Mexico where they completed the construction of a pedestrian truss bridge for the community, working with Trigo y Miel (wheat and honey) through Forward Edge International. The team accomplished their two-week goal of getting the bridge up before the start of the rainy season, when flooding rains keeps some children from getting to the ministry meals. Brian Swartz, Andy Erikson, Scott Heisey, and adjunct Doug Stumpp (all ENGR) advised the team, which included engineering students Erika Boice, Erin Brenneman, Daniel Gallagher, Daniel Mewha, Connor Reyer, and Nathan Yeoman as well as music and Spanish major Hannah Snavely. Reminder: 2016-2017 performance appraisals due June 15

Performance appraisals for all administrative and staff employees, with the exception of employees in operations, are due on June 15. Operations will continue to review their employees during the month of their hiring anniversary. Customized appraisal forms have been established to better support the environment and requirements of different areas of the college. Other areas of the College may continue, this year, to use the standard Word appraisal forms found in the forms section of the Human Resources and Compliance website. All areas will be required to migrate to customized forms for the 2017-18 appraisal process. If you have any questions regarding the review process, please contact Kathy Castonguay, human resources.

Intercultural Office

Danielle Betteridge has completed her interim assignment as the assistant director for International Student Programs and will be moving to Zambia with her husband who works with CURE International. Luiza Cliver will be the new assistant director and will begin the position on July 1. Luiza studied as an international student from Brazil at Messiah College and completed her Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation at Trinity College in Dublin. Lydia Skulstad has accepted the part time position of Immigration Advisor/Designated School official. Lydia is an alum of Trinity Western University where she received her Master’s degree in TESOL. Lydia will be advising and supporting our F-1 students.

Residence LifeWe are pleased to announce that Beth Moshier will be the new residence director for Witmer Hall. Beth is a Messiah College alum, and she received her Master’s degree in community counseling from the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut. Paula Hoffman will be moving from Witmer Hall to Bittner Hall as the new assistant director of Residence Life for the first year experience. We are sad to announce that Dave Downey, director of residence life, has submitted his resignation. He accepted a position as the associate pastor of community and mission at Hope Church in Oakdale, Minnesota. His last day at Messiah will be June 9. We are currently in the process of hiring his replacement. We are also very sorry to say goodbye to Kevin Williams, assistant director of residence life, Harrisburg and special interest housing. Kevin has accepted a position as the director of residence life and restorative justice coordinator at Bluffton University in Ohio. His last day on campus was May 26. We wish both Dave and Kevin well as they take their talents to new places. They both have had a significant impact on Student Affairs, our students and our community during their time here in Grantham.

Online networking opportunity for students and alumni

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting three monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The three virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month. For the month of June, we are hosting the following networking receptions:

• Thursday, June 15: 8- 9:30 p.m. (non profit/human services majors), for alumni and students
• Monday, June 26: noon-1:30 p.m. (connecting alumni/students in the NYC area), alumni/seniors
• Friday, June 30: noon- 1:30 p.m. (golden grads), for alumni

After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing them to quickly meet new people, exchange contact information and walk away with several new connections they may not have had before. Messiah Dining Services Bakery was awarded 1st place honors in the 2nd Annual Harrisburg Baking Championship – Sweet Bites for Better Sight, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Harrisburg. Proceeds from the event benefit the development and installation of an eye clinic at the Hamilton Health Center. The award winning dessert created by Messiah’s Kathy Eberly and Beverly Spangler was a chocolate chip cookie dough tartlet with cream cheese and salted caramel, finished with a hand-piped chocolate garnish inspired by the rotary club logo. Congratulations!

On May 16, Dr. Gene Chase, professor emeritus of mathematics and computer science, spoke to a pastor’s conference at Valley Bible Church in Middlebury, Vermont on the topic Loving Gays. Dr. Chase gave two talks, each followed by discussion. His first talk focused on the social—encouraging pastors to welcome gays in their congregation, using the “belong, believe, behave” model, and encouraging them to have “centered-set” thinking instead of “bounded set” thinking (to borrow from Paul Hiebert’s insights). His second talk focused on the theological—encouraging them to agree with Jesus and St. Paul about what they say about sexual minorities.

Bringing back students early in August

If you plan to sponsor students for early arrival (before Sun., Aug. 27), please complete the online early arrival request form or if you have a large group of students, please contact housing@messiah.edu for a spreadsheet to fill out and return by Tues., Aug. 1. The earliest students may return this year is Mon., Aug. 14, but we ask that you bring your students back as late as possible. Please note that the meal plan for returning students will not be active until Fri., Aug. 25 at lunch. If you need meal cards for the students you are bringing back early, please make these arrangements through the Falcon Exchange. There is no charge for students to stay on campus. However, any additions received between Aug. 2 – Aug. 16 will be charged $25/person and between Aug. 17 – 30 will be charged $50/person.
