Senior biochemistry major Dan Haas will be presenting his departmental honors research, entitled, “Fluorescent Tagging of HIV-1 Using a Novel Recombinant Protein,” on Friday, April 20 at 4 p.m. in Kline 327. Dan has worked on this project for over two years, under the mentorship of Dr.’s Emily Farrar, Matt Farrar and Jesse Kleingardner. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites you to join us for this presentation. Refreshments will be served prior to the seminar.

Molly Bletz ’11 published an article with other scientists in a prestigious academic journal on the topic, “Shifts in disease dynamics in a tropical amphibian assemblage are not due to pathogen attenuation.” This study appears in the March 30 edition of Science.

Congratulations to 2016 biochemistry alumnus, Kelsey Schlegel, who was granted a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Kelsey is a second-year student at Pennsylvania State University and her project is entitled, “Investigating Mn2+ Doped Nanocrystals for Use in Photocatalysis.”

Senior biology major Samuel Stambaugh presented a talk entitled “Cryopreservation of Human Erythrocytes for Laboratory Culture of Plasmodium falciparum” to the annual spring meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington held at the Penn State York campus on Saturday, April 14. Given in response to a personal invitation by the meeting organizer who had heard Sam speak at the recent Pennsylvania Academy of Science meeting, the talk described results from an ongoing senior research project that Sam and collaborator Nicole Clemente are conducting under the direction of Dr. Larry Mylin (Biological Sciences, Messiah College). In recognition of his outstanding talk, Sam was awarded with the society’s Judith Humphrey Shaw Undergraduate Award. This local project supports ongoing malaria research efforts in Macha, Zambia that are guided by Phil Thuma’70.

Students from Messiah College’s capstone marketing class, Marketing Management and Strategy (MRKT 438), participated in a semester-long case competition sponsored by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA). The focus of the “live” case was MedExpress, the nation’s leading urgent care company, which wants to increase brand engagement with Generation Z. The competition culminated on April 13 at Chatham University. Eight marketing executives judged twelve teams on their written marketing plans, posters and oral presentations. In just its second year in the competition, Messiah College Marketing won third place, ahead of the University of Pittsburgh, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, California University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia University, among others. Senior marketing majors Brittany Balmer, Megan Booher, Alicia Stoltzfus and Stephanie Walton represented Messiah College at Chatham, accompanied by Professor of Marketing David Hagenbuch.

Agape Center spring cleaning/chores fundraiser
While Mother Nature may have yet to receive the “memo,” spring is finally here! …And we all know that springtime means spring cleaning. The Agape Center’s international service trip team members are eager to partner with you to help you get your spring cleaning done! This year, we are again offering our annual spring cleaning/chores fundraiser the weekend of Friday, April 27 – Sunday, April 29. We ask that you consider enlisting the help of our student team members and, in return, provide a financial donation that will directly support our International service-learning teams traveling to Bolivia and Nicaragua this summer. We have a variety of timeslots available, beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 27 and concluding at 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 29. Students will be available to assist you with a variety of your spring-cleaning tasks (i.e., cleaning, painting, organizing, washing cars, etc.). Our students will even babysit to give you a night without the kids! Please see the attached FAQ sheet for more information on our upcoming service trips and fundraiser. Please keep in mind this is an entirely donation-based fundraiser; however, we’d like to recommend a donation of approximately $40 per student. New library director selected
The search committee and I are pleased to announce that Linda Poston has been selected as the next director of the Murray Library. She bring strengths in strategic planning, organization, team-building, hospitality and best practices to the directorship. Linda is currently serving as director of the library at Nyack College and in the past has also led both the CCCU’s and the West Chester (NY) area’s librarian professional associations. We look forward to Linda’s planned start on July 1. For those around this summer, please take time to welcome our new director. In the fall, the Library will host a reception for everyone to meet her.
