On June 8, retired senior lecturer of athletic training and director of Messiah’s athletic training program Sandy Bush was inducted into the Pennsylvania Athletic Training Hall of Fame by the PA Athletic Trainers’ Society. Congratulations to Sandy!

Please come and help celebrate Nu Ha-Dao’s 17 years of service to the College as she prepares to retire. Nu has worked in the Campus Events Department on the third shift in Old Main, library and ECC over the 17 year span. She has always greeted students, employees and guests of the college with a smile and will be missed. A Collaboratory team returned on June 9 from Oaxaca, Mexico. The Village Water Ozonation System (VWOS) team served with Forward Edge International. They checked on a two-year-old installation and explored possible future installation sites. Michelle Lockwood (ENGR) advised the team, which included engineering students Brandon Blackhurst and Daniel Ma, and psych/public relations major Abigail Poh. The bridge team served with partnering organization, Friends in Action (FIA) in the remote Rama Cay area. The team partially constructed a bridge that will allow 2 areas of the community to be connected during the rainy season. Doug Flemmens (Collab) and John Meyer (ENGR) advised the team, which included engineering students: Sam Gobeille, Dan Mewha, Nathan Myers, Mark Simpkins, Ben Weaver, Eric Weaver, Nathan Yeoman, and film/media studies major Hunter Hill. Joshua Good (AROMA) also joined the team.

Messiah College Adult ESL Summer Camp 2018
The Graduate Program in Education, under the direction of Dr. Jan Dormer, is hosting an Adult ESL Camp July 11-13, at the Messiah College Winding Hill facility. It is open to English learners, 18 years and older, who are at any English proficiency level. Our placement testing dates are June 25 and 26, so we would like to see students registered by June 16. Green chemistry
As part of the Chemistry/Biochemistry Department’s efforts to promote “Green Chemistry” and enhance safety, the department has just upgraded its system for DNA and protein gel analysis to one that uses stain free gels. Biochemists use gels to separate mixtures of protein or DNA fragments and identify them. However, these molecules are colorless and a system of staining and destaining has typically been needed for observing the gels. The upgrades to the “EZ DOC” system will reduce the exposure to hazardous chemicals used in the process. In addition, it will lower the amount of hazardous chemical waste generated by several pounds per year. While that number does not seem very large, the lowered cost of the disposal is estimated to offset the procurement cost of the upgrade in just two to three years. In addition to this, the department continues to “green” its working space by eliminating old and unused chemicals. The department has reduced its chemical stocks by 63% in the past nine years.
