Dr. Robert Reyes, professor of human development and family science, recently co-authored a paper with David Dollahite and Loren Marks (Brigham Young University) entitled “Relationship with God and the Word: Faith among American Evangelical Christian Families” in the Journal of Marriage and Family Review.
Cindi Kerns and Rocky Allinger presented a poster session at CAST’s 4th Annual Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts this summer. Their poster, “Increasing Awareness of UDL at Messiah College,” is available for close inspection right outside their office doors on the first floor of Hoffman. They would be happy to engage with others on the topic.

Employee permits
New employees – Please log into MCSquare, https://www.messiah.edu/mcsquare and click on “Employees.” Then in the Employee Quicklinks drop down box, choose “FalconPark,” click on “Employee Vehicle Registration (Web Form)” and fill in the requested information. (Please be sure that you continue until you reach a page which says, “Completed” and gives you a reference number.) Your parking permit will be sent to you through campus mail.
Previously registered employees – You do not need to re-register. Your current, orange parking permit is valid until August 30, 2019.
By September 3, all employees must park in their assigned employee lot, which is specified on your employee parking hangtag. If your lot is ever completely full, please call Dispatch at ext. 6005. Please refer all questions on existing and new employee parking permits to JoAnn Schaeffer at ext. 7147 or jschaeffer@messiah.edu.

Incoming first-year/transfer students
Student parking permit pickup for incoming first-year and transfer students that have submitted all of their paperwork and received approval is in Brubaker Gymnasium on Move-In Day.
Returning students
Returning students may pick up their permits:
- Saturday, Sept. 1 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. outside the Falcon Exchange, 2nd floor ECC
- Sunday, Sept. 2 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Brubaker Gymnasium, 1st floor ECC
- Monday, Sept. 3 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. outside the Falcon Exchange, 2nd floor ECC.

New student orientation and Welcome Week begins Aug. 31
The Good Life is this year’s theme for Welcome Week 2018. Messiah College is excited to welcome our incoming first-year and transfer students as they begin their orientation on Friday, Aug. 31. You can visit www.messiah.edu/welcomeweek to see the full orientation agenda that they will follow. Every employee will receive a handout via campus mail early next week that you can carry with you and use as a reference tool if you will be on campus on Aug. 31. You may encounter new students and their families that have questions about where they need to be, who they need to contact, etc. This is a very handy guide. Any questions about the activities on Aug. 31 can be directed to the office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs, ext. 5240 or silp@messiah.edu.
A Farewell to Arms, Sept. 16
The Mendelssohn Piano Trio in collaboration with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) and Stuart Malina, artistic director of the Harrisburg Symphony, as well as clarinetist Christopher Grymes, will perform a special concert commemorating the centennial of the conclusion of World War I. The program features the sublime Nocturne by Franz Schubert for piano trio, and Olivier Messiaen’s monumental “Quartet for the End of Time” which will include “To the Eternity,” a touching pas de deux choreographed by Alan Hineline, director of artistic programming at CPYB. The event is Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in Parmer Hall, located in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts.
Upperclass move-in change
We are looking forward to welcoming back to campus new and upperclass students. We are changing upperclass move in procedures on Sunday, Sept. 2 and want to make you aware in case you plan to be on campus that day.
- Upperclass students moving onto campus on Sept. 2 can do so between the hours of 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and will check-in at Eisenhower (not in residences) to pick up their key.
- College Avenue will be one-way until 6 p.m. Sunday from the High Center (creek side) all the way to the stop sign by Smith Apartments so that students can unload curbside before parking.
- There are no changes to Monday move-in.
- Students arriving Monday, Sept. 3 can pick up their key from the Residence Life Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Residence Life is so appreciative of the many offices partnering with to make a smooth and welcoming experience for our residential students.
Employee choir at Community Day
The employee ‘OK Chorale’ will make a return to this year’s Community Day service, to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28. We hope to once again share ‘Total Praise’ with the community, and will hold a brief rehearsal the Monday prior to Community Day (time and location TBD). No audition is necessary, and if you love to sing, we’d love to have you join us! Welcoming international and multicultural students
The Intercultural Office will be welcoming incoming new international and multicultural students to campus this year in two overlapping orientations:
- International Student Orientation will begin on Monday, Aug. 27 for incoming international, missionary and third culture students.
- Multicultural Student Orientation will begin on Thursday, Aug. 30 for incoming domestic underrepresented students.
Research and best practice indicate that students thrive when they have a sense of belonging. Recognizing some of the unique challenges our underrepresented and international students face on a majority white campus, these orientations offer the opportunity for these students to begin to build connections with each other and foster a sense of belonging with our broader campus community prior to participating in Welcome Week activities on Friday. Welcome Kathee Clark, associate registrar for undergraduate programs
The Registrar’s Office welcomes the new associate registrar for undergraduate programs, Kathee Clark. Kathee’s first day at Messiah was July 9. She replaces Carrie Widdowson who has moved to the position of Registrar. Kathee comes to Messiah with previous higher education experience as the director of student success, adjunct professor, and academic coordinator for the Worship and Performing Arts Department at Lancaster Bible College. Kathee’s office is located in Old Main Suite 3007.
