It is with sadness we share the news that College Press services coordinator, Carole Hutchinson, passed away Tuesday morning, May 15. Carole worked for Messiah for 15 years, encouraging countless students and employees while helping them place orders and manage print files. She will be greatly missed. Please join us in remembering her by carrying forward her compassion, gift for hospitality and her unconditional love.

Tara Bowers Savarino, adjunct instructor of music, was recently selected to serve as a judge for the Music Theatre High School Men’s division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing National Auditions, being held in Las Vegas in June 2018. Mrs. Savarino viewed submissions by regional contestants competing to advance to the live final rounds, which will be held in conjunction with the 2018 NATS National Conference. In previous years, Mrs. Savarino has had three of her own private vocal students advance to the national round of NATS, with one being selected as a national finalist. She maintains a private voice studio in Mechanicsburg and teaches Applied Voice to Music Theatre and Commercial Music majors.


Congratulations to Brian Menkis, studio art technician, and his wife, Naomi, as they welcome their baby girl born on Saturday, May 5. Cordelia Annette weighed 8 lbs. and was 20″ long. They are home and doing very well.


Important reminder for faculty

Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2018 Fall Semester work submission deadlines have been set. Please coordinate your needs for your courses with the deadline dates posted on the ITS Blog. Click on this link to review the deadlines: Procedure review:

  1. Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by Diane Hunsinger approximately 6-8 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack at College Press.
  2. Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
  3. It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager, Campus Store and Textbook Express.
  4. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials, and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

Laptop tune-ups during May Development Week

It’s time for annual laptop tune-ups. This happens annually during May Development Week. Tune-ups take at least four hours to complete, and are completed on a first come, first served basis, so get your laptop in early! Tune-ups include spyware and malware scans and Windows updates as needed. Call the HelpDesk with questions or stop by Hoffman to off drop your laptop.

Family Weekend 2018

Please save the date for Family Weekend 2018, held September 21-23! The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs is in the beginning stages of collecting all events planned over that weekend. Summer driving hazards

Think icy and snowy roads create the most hazardous driving conditions? Think again! According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, summer months have more fatal car accidents than winter months! Why is summer driving so dangerous? • Summer storms and thunder showers can cause hazardous conditions for driving: slippery roads, hydroplaning, flash flooding, downed trees, even hail! • With school out, there are more teens on the road. Their lack of experience (and often lack of attention) can lead to more accidents. Teens are more likely to be involved in car accidents than any other age group. • There is more road congestion as families hit the highways for vacations. In addition, vacationing drivers are often traveling unfamiliar roads so they may be driving too slowly or making sudden stops and turns. • The chance for tire blowouts increases during hot weather as the air inside your tires expands from the heat. The chances of your engine overheating also increase when the weather is hot; if this happens, pull over to let it cool down. • Road construction increases during the summer resulting in delays, detours, and road rage. • More bicycles and motorcycles are on the road when the sun is shining. Because they are more difficult to see than other vehicles, you need to be alert for them at all times. • Children are outside playing more in the summer, increasing the chances of a child darting into the street and in front of your vehicle. • More people are walking and jogging which means you need to be alert for pedestrians, especially during early morning and evening hours when dark clothes make it more difficult to see them. • The sun’s bright glare can temporarily blind you if you aren’t wearing appropriate sunglasses. • And dehydration can be a very real safety concern on long drives if you don’t keep a bottle of water handy. Likewise, if you break down or are stranded for any length of time, you want to make sure you have water available, especially if you have young children with you. Don’t get careless with your driving because you don’t have to worry about black ice or bitter cold. Remember that summer driving has its own set of safety hazards!

Falcon Exchange student early arrival meal card deadline

Departments bringing students back early for athletic participation, work or volunteer assistance, etc. will need to complete an Early Arrival Card Request Form if you would like to provide meals to your students.  The deadline to submit the form is July 15.  Questions may be directed to or ext. 7213.

Reminder – Recognition Reception on Tuesday, May 22

Please join us on Tuesday, May 22, as we gather to celebrate the commitment of those employees who have reached significant service milestones. We thought it might be helpful to share how we determine who has reached service milestones, as we have not included this information recently in the Intercom. Employees who meet the following criteria are recognized: • Full-time and part-time employees • Employees who will reach a significant service year milestone (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc.) on or before September 15 of that year • Employees who are re-hired by the College will be credited with service years earned prior to an approved break in service • Temporary or occasional assignments are not considered when calculating service years This year’s Recognition Reception will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Brubaker Auditorium. We will have a time of refreshments and fellowship until 11:30 a.m. with conveying of awards to follow. The list of employees to be honored can be viewed here. In addition to recognizing service milestones and retirements, we will also be announcing the recipients of performance awards. Falcon Exchange summer hours

The Falcon Exchange has implemented summer window hours effective Monday, May 21. Falcon Exchange will be open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. These summer hours are in effect through Friday, August 17. Evaluation of Falcon Fitness Center usage

The opening year of the Falcon Fitness Center is coming to a close, and as promised a team has come together to analyze the usage data and determine if we have the capacity to allow more constituents to have access to the Center. I am excited to report that since August 29, 2017 we’ve had over 118,000 total visits to our fitness center! On a busy day we see over 1,000 people come through the front door, that’s almost half the students who live on campus! Furthermore, the spring semester saw roughly 8,000 more total visits compared to the fall. Our hope is to continue to offer more programming and education to employees and students with the goal of seeing these numbers increase next year.

Given these high usage numbers our leadership team has determined that access to the Falcon Fitness Center will be limited to current undergraduate and graduate students, employees, employee’s spouses, and dependents of employees between the ages of 16-18. It has also been determined that retired employees will be given the opportunity to purchase a yearlong membership. Usage data will continue to be collected and analyzed with the goal of always offering our community the best services possible.

We want to highlight that the indoor track is open to alumni and community members according to the schedule posted on the doors. Over the summer, a predicted low usage time, memberships will be made available to the Falcon Fitness Center. Grass Volleyball Triples Tournament

Love to play volleyball? Mechanicsburg boys’ volleyball team sponsors a triples grass volleyball tournament for all ages on June 2 at Memorial Park in Mechanicsburg.
