“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

The National Association of Scientific Materials Managers (NAOSMM) recently awarded Steve Funck, Natural Sciences laboratory program manager, the Lamar Houston Service Award for long-term service towards the ideals of the organization both at Messiah College and to the larger community of laboratory and scientific materials managers as a whole. The award was given at their annual meeting, held this year on July 22-27, in Spokane, Washington. Both he and Sarah Crone, assistant laboratory program manager, attended this conference. Congratulations, Steve!

Plan to attend Community Day on Aug. 28

All employees are encouraged to attend Community Day on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This annual Messiah tradition serves as the ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees with opportunities for corporate worship and fellowship, as well as the presentation of the president’s State of the College address. Refreshments will be available after the gathering from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in front of Climenhaga (rain location is Howe Atrium, Boyer Hall). All offices and departments (with the exception of Dispatch and the Early Learning Center) will close from 8:45-11:30 a.m. to allow employees to attend the gathering and reception. If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Cohen, executive assistant to the president, at

Employee choir at Community Day

The employee ‘OK Chorale’ will make a return to this year’s Community Day service, to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28. We hope to once again share ‘Total Praise’ with the community, and will hold a brief rehearsal the Monday prior to Community Day (time and location TBD). No audition is necessary, and if you love to sing, we’d love to have you join us! To register your interest, ask any pertinent questions, and receive music in advance of the rehearsal, please email Douglas Curry at Hope you can join us!

Welcoming international and multicultural students

The Intercultural Office will be welcoming incoming new international and multicultural students to campus this year in two overlapping orientations:

• International Student Orientation will begin on Monday, Aug. 27 for incoming international, missionary and third culture students.

• Multicultural Student Orientation will begin on Thursday, Aug. 30 for incoming domestic underrepresented students.

Research and best practice indicate that students thrive when they have a sense of belonging. Recognizing some of the unique challenges our underrepresented and international students face on a majority white campus, these orientations offer the opportunity for these students to begin to build connections with each other and foster a sense of belonging with our broader campus community prior to participating in Welcome Week activities on Friday. If you have questions about these orientations, please contact the Intercultural Office at or ext. 2131.
