Strategic Planning and Prioritization Forums
Two Strategic Planning and Prioritization Forums for employees will be held on Monday, Sept. 16 in Parmer Hall. The first session will be held from 11 a.m. -noon and the second will be held from 3-4 p.m. Please choose the time that best suits your schedule. The presentation will be led by President Kim Phipps and members of the President’s Cabinet. The presentation will be followed with time for a Q&A session. All employees are encouraged to attend.
“In Matter and in Mode” faculty exhibition, artists’ talk and reception
This exhibition features selected work by full and part-time members of the Messiah College Art and Design Faculty. The exhibition encompasses a variety of approaches to the concepts, materials and methods of art-making, design and exhibition curation. It provides a setting for dialogue between students and their mentors, and an opportunity for the greater community to engage with the creative endeavor of this talented faculty. Exhibition runs Sept. 13-Oct. 9.
Join us for the artists’ talk and reception on Friday, Oct. 4 at 4: 15 p.m. in the Aughinbaugh Arts Gallery in the Climenhaga Building. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Pizza with Professionals events for the fall semester
The Career and Professional Development Center has an exciting line-up of Pizza with Professionals events for the fall semester. During these one-hour sessions, a speaker (usually a Messiah alum) will talk to students about his/her career path, current organization and any job or internship openings available there. Sept. 18, Sperry Labs: Andrew Brown’03 will speak to students about his experiences as senior product manager at EA (Electronic Arts), game designer at Play Impossible and his current role as co-founder of the digital consulting firm Sperry Labs.
Oct. 1, alums in the food industry: Five Messiah alumni who are successful entrepreneurs in the food industry will share about their career paths. Panelists are Stephanie Perry ’99, owner of Yellow Bird Café; Heidi Tucker’09, co-owner of Sunshine Bakery; Jeff ’08 and Emily Mitchell ’08, owners of Lancaster Cupcake; and Jeff Conrady’85, owner of the Square Bean.
Oct. 14, Philadelphia Eagles: Bre Grignano ’09 will talk about her game day media/public relations position with the Philadelphia Eagles. She will also speak about Greater than Me, the sports ministry nonprofit she recently founded.
Oct. 30, panel on gap-year experiences: Students will be able to ask questions of panelists and learn what it is like to serve with a nonprofit for a year after college, go abroad on a missions trip before starting full-time employment and participate in a short-term professional fellowship to gain experience and make connections.
Oct. 22, Philadelphia Project: Students will learn more about this urban ministry, which serves the community of Philadelphia through educational programs, home repair and summer ministry experiences. Opportunities are available for internship and volunteer positions.

MUSIC FOR PIANO TIMES TWO III “War and Peace I”

Inspired by the 150th anniversary of the great novel “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy, this first of two programs focuses on Tolstoy’s love of the piano, as well as the deep historical connections between the Russian and French cultures, which produced some of the world’s greatest achievements in the arts. Stuart Malina, artistic director of the Harrisburg Symphony, and Richard Roberson, dean of the Messiah College School of the Arts, will join piano faculty Patrice Ewoldt and Ya-Ting Chang to perform music for two pianos by Chopin, Chaminade, Milhaud and Debussy, and will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s iconic “1812 Overture.”

A two-time Grammy award nominee, Rod Gilfry most recently received a Grammy award nomination for his performance in the title role of Messiaen’s monumental opera “Saint François d’Assise” in Amsterdam. Best known for his work in opera, he also appears frequently in musical theater classics and is an acclaimed recitalist and concert artist. He has recently appeared at the Metropolitan Opera as Alberto Roc in the American premiere of Thomas Ades’s “The Exterminating Angel,” as well as Danilo in “The Merry Widow” opposite Susan Graham. Threefold Cord Women’s Choir presents “Love Is”
This Messiah College sponsored choir will perform “Love Is,” an exploration of love as defined by the ancient Greeks. While there is no admission charge, donations will be accepted to support Love the Hill, a non-profit working alongside the people of Allison Hill, Harrisburg. The performance will take place on Sept. 14 at 7p.m. at the Slate Hill Mennonite Church, Camp Hill.

“Stop the Bleed” training offered
Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. When severe, uncontrolled bleeding occurs, every second counts. The Department of Homeland Security launched the “Stop the Bleed” campaign to raise public awareness and knowledge on how to prevent these deaths. In an effort to better prepare our campus community for any emergency, “Stop the Bleed” training will be offered on Thursday, Sept. 26 to all employees and all students. This training will be conducted by employees of the Geisinger Holy Spirit Education Center. All sessions will be held in Hostetter Chapel. Sessions are scheduled for 1:30-2:30, 2:45-3:45 and 4-5 p.m. Openings are being filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up for one of these training sessions, go to FalconLink. Search for Training and click on the All Training Classes link that appears. Click on the drop down arrow under Click Here to See Available Classes. Select Stop the Bleed and then click on the pencil icon in front of the session you prefer; follow the directions to register.
Trekking to Tokyo- an employee wellness program
Tracking our daily steps (or step equivalents) often helps us get closer to our daily goal of 10,000 per day. We’re hoping this 10-week wellness program beginning on Sunday, Sept. 22 will do just that. The good news is that ANY activity counts, not just walking. An easy chart and recording form converts all types of aerobic activity to steps. Those who submit their previous week’s total (online) by Monday at midnight each week, and also average 40,000 steps per week will be eligible for free prize drawings at the end of the program. We’re officially launching Mosaic, Messiah’s Institutional Repository, on Tuesday, Sept. 17! Join us as we celebrate the first public viewing of Mosaic, Messiah’s Open Scholarship and Intellectual Creativity. Funded by the Sawyer Digital Initiative, the institutional repository is Messiah’s showcase of intellectual output of its staff and students. Banned Books Week at Murray Library
What do Winnie the Pooh, Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl and the Bible have in common? They were all banned at one time or another! Join Murray Library as we celebrate Banned Books week from Sept. 23-27. Visit displays highlighting some of the banned books that are in our collection and come by our table where you can check off how many of these books YOU have read.

- For simple black and white and/or color printing including syllabuses, exams, fliers, postcards and posters that are smaller than “12 x 18”: 4-5 business days
- For higher quantities and items involving bindery such as booklets that are under 36 pages: 6 to 10 business days
- For complex offset printing including booklets that are over 36 pages: 10 to 15 business days
- For basic offset printing such as letterhead or envelopes: 8 to 10 business days
- For wide or large format printing (larger than 12” x 18”): 6 to 10 business days
- For ALL projects that require graphic design, please allow a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks (includes the print schedule)
