Dwayne Safer, assistant professor of finance, recently spoke at The Economist’s signature Investing for Impact conference in New York City. He spoke on a panel entitled “Impact for the Next Generation” where he addressed Gen Z investing trends as well as the growing movement of faith-based investing and aligning portfolios with God-honoring investments.

The Human Library needs books

Homecoming and Family Weekend committee

The office of Alumni and Parent Relations is building a team of volunteers who are interested in being a part of planning Homecoming and Family Weekend 2020. Those interested are asked to commit to: – Monthly meetings to build the schedule and review progress (especially during the months of August – October) – Day-of volunteering (October 17) – Leadership over specific events or jobs – TBD  If in-depth commitment isn’t something you have space for, but you can be a part of volunteering that day, please let us know!  We’ll add you to our list and follow-up later in the year with more information! Fire extinguishing training

According to recent data released by the US Fire Administration for 2008-2017, the US had an annual average of 1,344,100 fires, resulting in 3,190 civilian deaths, 16,225 civilian injuries, and $14.7 billion in direct property loss each year. Don’t become part of these statistics.

Fire extinguisher training will be offered on campus Tuesday, Feb. 25 through Thursday, Feb. 27. Multiple sessions will be offered during these days. All training sessions will be held in Hostetter Chapel, Room 113 and will include hands-on use of the Bullex© Simulation System. This allows you to experience the “feel” of a real extinguisher without any adverse impact on the environment. Class size is limited so you must register. Advisor needed for Spring Break 2020 service trip

The Agapé Center for Service and Learning is in search of a professional staff advisor for our Spring Break service trip to Priority One Ministries (Bronx, NY). Priority One Ministries is a long-time partner of Messiah College. Volunteers will actively engage with impoverished communities in the greater NYC area, assisting with a Breakfast and Lunch Ministry program for the homeless; an after-school program for tutoring inner-city children; the World Vision storehouse and more! The Spring Break service trip will take place from March 14-20. All costs are covered for trip advisors. Because we seek to make our service trips an opportunity for student leaders to grow and develop skills in leading, reflection and facilitation, the trip advisor simply serves as a resource and encouragement for student leaders and assists in any problem-solving that may arise. The Alumni Awards Banquet will take place Saturday, March 28, from 5-7 p.m. in Martin Commons. The evening will include a greeting from President Kim Phipps, buffet-style dinner and a program honoring this year’s award recipients.

School of the Humanities Summer Academic Camps

This summer, the School of the Humanities will hold four academic camps.

New this year! Our Readers’ Workshop will delve into readings by C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and others as a way to strengthen their love of reading, explore literary concepts and immerse themselves into the world of high fantasy and science fiction.  This camp is held on June 21 – 25 and is for students in rising grades 9 – 12.  To learn more about this camp, visit the website at

The Young Filmmakers Workshop provides college-level filmmaking skills for students in rising grades 10-12.  Students will leave with an understanding of how to be a writer, director, actor, cinematographer and editor. The Young Writers Workshop provides college-level writing skills development for students in rising grades 9 – 12.  The workshop offers intensive courses in creative writing taught by published faculty and writers, a fieldtrip, poetry readings and other activities.  This workshop will be held on June 21 – 26. FaithWorks@MessiahCollege  is a unique summer experience connecting faith and service. Students will learn from our faculty in Bible, ministry and theology, spend time with college student mentors, work alongside others as they invest in their communities and celebrate the gift of their faith and the joy of doing God’s work. JAZZ VESPERS Eric Byrd Trio, Tim Warfield, Terrell Stafford, United Voices of Praise

Feb. 29, 2020 at 7:30 p.m., Parmer Hall The Eric Byrd Trio, Jazz Ambassadors for the U.S. State Department and the Kennedy Center, will present a worship service featuring Biblical scripture readings and music drawn from Negro spirituals, hymns and black gospel music, all performed within the idiom of jazz. Artist in Residence Eric Byrd will be joined by trio members Bhagwan Khalsa, bass, and drummer Alphonso Young Jr. The program will also feature Artist in Residence Tim Warfield on saxophone, trumpeter Terrell Stafford and Messiah’s gospel choir, United Voices of Praise.
