On July 1, 2020, Messiah College officially became Messiah University. In the months leading up to that name change, College Press renamed itself and rebranded. The department, which had been known across campus for nearly 50 years as “College Press,” became “Messiah Press” and with that name change came a slew of promotional activity, new signage, new forms, new web pages and a new on-line ordering system.
On Oct. 13, the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) recognized that campaign and Messiah Press with the In-House Promotional Excellence Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in promotional vehicles and/or campaigns developed by and used to promote an in-house corporate publishing facility. The Awards Committee expressed a deep appreciation for the planning and purpose of the campaign as well as the remarkable graphic design and the impressive results, all of which occurred while working through pandemic related challenges.
Founded in 1964, the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) is the only professional association dedicated exclusively to meet the needs of all segments’ in-house printers and mailers. The more than 700 members of IPMA are managers and directors from in-plant printing and mailing facilities throughout the United States. IPMA is headquartered in Kearney, MO. Fueled by Failure: Unlikely Paths to Success
Please join us in Murray Library on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 7-8 p.m. to hear from six panelists who will share about some of the failures in their lives and how God used those failures to bring them to new and better places. Panelists include Amy Nichols, director of international student programs; Lyndsay Grimm, director of residence life; Robin Lauermann, professor of politics; Donald Pratt, retired professor of engineering; Isabelle Meredith, adjunct instructor in language, literature and writing; and Jay McClymont, director of alumni and parent relations. Please encourage students to attend, as we highlight the importance of resilience, determination and faith in the midst of trial and disappointment.
Development staff transition
It is with regret that I announce that Mark Templeton will be leaving his alma mater as of Friday, Oct. 29.
Mark will become a development officer for the Brethren in Christ denomination. The good news is that Mark will only be across the train tracks in the Brethren in Christ denominational office – but the very sad news is that he will no longer be in Old Main.
Over the past nine years, Mark has served in various gift officer capacities within the Development Office. His winsome attitude and dedication to our Christ-centered mission have enabled him to forge strong relationships with donors of Messiah, particularly Heritage Society members, Retired Educators, and our Bux-Mont Council. The impact of his good work will continue long into the future. We are deeply grateful for Mark’s tenure at Messiah and wish him the very best!

With the change in seasons, come see the restock of autumn and fall themed puzzles! Joanna Hadley-Evans curates a robust collection of jigsaw puzzles available for swap/loan with colleagues on campus. Dozens of 300-2000 piece puzzles representing various seasons and themes are available – perfect for family time over break or holidays. 2021 Culture Connect: Transnational Branding, “the Girl Who Can,” and Postfeminist Edutainment
On Thursday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 pm in Boyer Hall’s Parmer Cinema, Dr. Nicoletta Marini-Maio (Dickinson College) and Dr. Ellen Nerenberg (Wesleyan University) will explore the production, aesthetics, narrative, reception, and circulation of Winx Club (2004- ), a cartoon series and a multinational merchandising system ideated, developed, and produced multinationally and multilingually by Rainbow Productions, Loreto, Italy. A reception in Howe Atrium will immediately follow the event.

Mendelssohn Piano Trio presents “Unity in Variety: Musical Path to Reconciliation”, High Foundation Recital Hall, Oct. 31, 4 p.m.
Felix Mendelssohn considered unity in variety the essence of the beautiful. Through masterpieces by Brahms and Ravel, Mendelssohn Piano Trio explores this idea and its broader implications for reconciliation in our increasingly fractured society. Mendelssohn Piano Trio explores both meanings of the word “reconciliation:” restoration of peaceful and friendly relationships, as well as making things compatible with each other.
The program includes Brahms Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major and Ravel Piano Trio. Brahms wrote his Sonata Op. 100 as a reconciliation gift to his friend, violinist Joseph Joachim and his wife, after their contentious separation which even involved a legal battle in which Brahms testified on wife’s behalf. The Ravel Piano Trio, written on the eve of World War I, is a perfect example of great artist’s ability to reconcile seemingly incompatible cultural influences such as French baroque forms, jazz harmonies and Javanese dance rhythms.
