Dr. Brenda Elliott and two colleagues published findings of a research study in Nurse Educator titled, “Analysis of content gaps in prelicensure textbooks to meet veteran care competencies.” The article reports a secondary analysis of identified content gaps in prelicensure nursing textbooks with veteran care competency (knowledge, skills and attitudes) domains. an article video is available on the journal webpage at


Staffing updates from Enrollment Management

We have elevated Kristin Thomas’ role to director of admissions hospitality. This new position will sit on the admissions directors’ leadership team, co-chair the new Admissions Visit and Event Advisory Team and direct the development of all visit, event and hospitality programming. She will also continue to give leadership to student workers and the ambassador team.

Kristin has hired Amanda McCarty as our new admissions hospitality assistant. She will be working 1-5 p.m. all year in the admissions lobby. Amanda comes to us from Northpoint Bible College in Massachusetts where she served in a variety of roles in admissions. She is also enrolled in the higher education master’s program here at Messiah.

Given the importance we are placing on attracting a more diverse student body and developing cultural intelligence among our team members as key themes both in our strategic plan and our mission to be reconcilers in Christ, we are thrilled to announce that Sierra Kinslow has been promoted to associate director of admissions, multicultural recruitment. Sierra is a strong leader who is passionate about reconciliation. We are excited to see her guide and influence the Division of Enrollment Management in matters related to recruiting and retaining multicultural and international students and first-generation students.

You may have heard that Chad Muise accepted a head coaching position at Houghton College and that Molly (Janczyk) Bruce has accepted a position working in financial advising with Kingdom Focused Financial Group in Dillsburg, PA (affiliated with Thrivent). They were both valuable members of our team whom we will miss dearly. In their absence, Nate Litman will be adding the coordination of telecounseling to his current responsibilities.

Virgil Angeles has been promoted to coordinator of social media, in addition to continuing in his position as admissions counselor. He will be responsible for the enhancement of our admissions department’s multiple social media accounts with the goal to increase prospective student engagement. He has also transitioned into the role of liaison for the of music, art and design, and theatre and dance departments.

We have hired two recent alumni to fill their admissions counselor positions:
Catherine Arke is a May 2021 marketing graduate of Messiah. She served as a RA her last two years at Messiah and has worked in the Admissions Office through the school year and summers since she was a first-year student. Catherine will serve students who come from York and Adams counties, as well as New England.
• Josh Gerber is a May 2021 graduate of Messiah with a double major in biblical and religious studies and business. At Messiah, he was involved in leading men’s ministry and was a work study student in the BRS department. Josh will serve students coming from Western PA, Downstate NY (including NYC and Long Island), the South and Midwest.

As we are hoping to resume travel this fall, we have hired Jennifer Weaver as our temporary traveling recruiter through November. Jennifer is a 2003 political science graduate of Messiah. After graduating, she attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary and received her master of divinity. More recently, she worked as a residence hall advisor at Lancaster Mennonite School. We are thankful for her representation of Messiah at off-campus events.

As you may have heard, Teresa Stover retired from the financial aid team at the end of July. Congratulations to her in this important decision! She has trained Lori McGill Sarago to take over as financial aid technical coordinator. In the short year that Lori has been with us, she has shown excitement to be working in the Messiah environment, a great willingness to learn and the flexibility to take on new tasks, making her the perfect choice for this role. As we embrace the challenge to make the financial aid process more digestible for students and families, this role will be key in coordinating with the financial aid team, the enrollment management operations team and with colleagues in student financial services to communicate effectively.

Financial Aid is also excited to welcome two new members to their team:
Chris Ackley will serve as financial aid counselor/coordinator of grant processing. Chris joins us from Dickinson College where he was most recently employed as the assistant director of financial aid. Chris arrives from Dickinson with eight years of increasing levels of responsibility in financial aid and will serve our students well through this role.
• Sheryl Sanders will serve as financial aid office assistant for 15 – 20 hours per week. Sheryl comes to us with a robust background in office administration, including time working at Lancaster County Christian School. Most recently, Sheryl has been self-employed as an interior designer.

In all of this, please join me in congratulating Leslie Bencivenga in her promotion to executive assistant for enrollment management. This role and title acknowledge the excellent work Leslie performs in supporting the EM leadership team, collaborating with partners across campus, and working with external firms and vendors to serve our prospective students and their families.

The Campaign for Messiah University: Learning for Life, Transforming the World

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to share exciting news regarding our current capital campaign – The Campaign for Messiah University: Learning for Life, Transforming the World. This campaign supports our vision to educate students for a lifetime of learning opportunities, including engaging our students and alumni beyond the undergraduate and graduate programs to include certificates and enhanced learning courses. This campaign encompasses several broad areas that support our efforts to fulfill our vision. They include: the Messiah fund and scholarship aid, scholarship and program endowments, new facilities, and estate planning gifts.

We have already reached several milestone accomplishments, including the construction of the Larsen Finance Lab, Martin Dining Commons, the Falcon Fitness Center, Sawyer Gymnasium, Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena, a new lacrosse field, the resurfacing of Anderson Field, and, most recently, the Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center. Further, we have significantly increased scholarship endowment and direct aid resources for our students. In fact, we have received $70 million toward our $75 million goal! Our plan is to reach the goal by December 31, 2022.

The public phase of the campaign launches Thursday, September 16, and we encourage you to follow along with our progress over the next set of months.

The Messiah University YouTube Channel

Messiah University’s official YouTube channel was launched by the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC) in 2010 to host the videos the OMC team produced to strategically communicate the story, brand and distinctive programs of Messiah to prospective students and their families (i.e. branding and academic program videos). Over time, OMC expanded the use of Messiah’s YouTube channel to host videos it created that may be of interest to current students and their families, employees and alumni (i.e., Commencement videos, Community Day year-in-review videos). While OMC currently produces a limited number of videos that serve key marketing communication clients, goals and initiatives at Messiah, it does not manage broader video production for campus clients. However, over the past decade, OMC has opened up Messiah’s YouTube channel to house some videos that are produced outside OMC and that meet certain criteria. Curator Club at the Oakes Museum!

Hello! This fall we are back to offering our Curator Club/ CC2 for kids in 3rd – 8th grade! Topics include studying the fish of the Yellow Breeches, learning about big cats, trees and winter survival. Curator Club (3-5 graders) meets 9:15 – 11:30 a.m. and CC2 (6-8 graders) meets 12:15-2:30 p.m. Register online!

Agape Center Open House

The newly renovated (!!!) Agapé Center for Local and Global Engagement is very excited to welcome students and employees to an Open House on Tuesday, Sept. 14 from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m.. We invite our campus community to come check out our new space and learn more about each of our distinctive areas: Service Day, local outreach, service trips and off-campus programs. During this time of meeting and greeting, there will be refreshments, activities and a chance to win gift card giveaways for those who learn about the four areas of our office.
