Dr. Brenda Elliott, assistant professor in the Department of Nursing, co-authored an article “Veterans competencies in nursing textbooks: Implications for educators” recently published in Nursing Education Perspectives. It is the second of two publications based on research conducted to analyze veteran-centered content in prelicensure textbooks, the authors were able to identify gaps and make recommendations for nursing faculty to incorporate concepts into the courses they teach. https://doi.org/10.1097/01.NEP.0000000000000923
Brenda also co-authored an article titled, “Above and beyond the call of duty: Rural home care and hospice nurses’ experiences caring for veterans” recently published in Home Healthcare Now. Enrollment management is pleased to announce that Tariah Rozier ’21 and Elizabeth “Libby” Curd ’19 will be joining our team on Feb. 10.
Tariah is a December 2021 graduate of Messiah with a major in family and consumer sciences education. She served as an RA while she was a student, as well as a diplomat with the HDFS department. Tariah was very involved in La Allianza Latina as well as the Special Olympics, acting as the service plunge day coordinator through the Agape Center. She has a special interest in serving first-generation students and Latino students which will serve her well in her role as admissions counselor for Latino student recruitment.
Libby graduated from Messiah with a human development and family science degree in May of 2019. In her time at Messiah, she served as an RA and SRA with Residence Life. Since graduating, she had worked at the United Methodist Children’s Home as well as Tuckey Restoration. The executive and communication skills she has capitalized on in those roles will help her excel as an admissions counselor.
Tariah and Libby will be filling the roles of Marianne Ramirez Gomez and TyJon Culclasure. They each left in early January to pursue new opportunities in their fields of study. We are grateful for their service to Messiah and our students and wish them well on the next steps of their professional journeys.

The Office of Residence Life is pleased to welcome Nikki Elsaesser as interim RD of Naugle Hall (as Beth Moshier has transitioned to associate registrar). Nikki is a double alumnus of Messiah having received her B.A. in athletic training (’16) and her M.A. in higher ed – strategic leadership (’20) where Nikki also served as a GA for Aroma. Most recently, she is coming to us after three years as head coach of the women’s soccer team at Houghton College. We are grateful for Nikki’s willingness to step into this position quickly and for her passion and genuine care for supporting and mentoring students. Please join us in welcoming Nikki.

Department Chairs Erik Lindquist (Department of Biological Sciences) and Brian Smith (Department of Biblical, Religious and Philosophical studies), and Student Ministries Pastor Mina Choi participated in a two-part the Language of God podcast series from BioLogos entitled, “Reconciling Evolution.” In the second part of the series, Erik, Brian and Mina are featured for 10 minutes discussing their philosophical, theological and pedagogical approaches to integrating some of life’s big questions in their courses and interactions with students at Messiah University. This podcast was the outgrowth of time spent at a Reconciling Evolution conference the attended in October 2021.

Trivia Night – this Friday
Put your knowledge to the test on Friday, Feb. 4 at Trivia Night! Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and trivia starts at 7 p.m. at Murray Library! 2022 fire extinguisher training
According to recent data released by the U.S. Fire Administration for 2008-2017, the U.S. had an annual average of 1,344,100 fires, resulting in 3,190 civilian deaths, 16,225 civilian injuries, and $14.7 billion in direct property loss each year. Don’t become part of these statistics. Fire extinguisher training will be offered on campus Monday, Feb. 7 through Friday, Feb. 11. Multiple sessions will be offered during these days. All training sessions will be held in Hostetter Chapel, Room 113 and will include hands-on use of the Bullex© Simulation System. This allows you to experience the “feel” of a real extinguisher without any adverse impact on the environment. Class size is limited to 20, so you must register. Connecting Communities Convening
In conjunction with the Kline Foundation, Messiah is hosting the Connecting Communities Convening. This hybrid in-person and virtual event will continue last year’s goal of impacting local, affordable housing and being a good neighbor. Last year, this event virtually brought together over 100 community leaders to lay the foundation for a policy white paper that encourages and ensures those seeking public funding for housing initiatives demonstrate their commitment to becoming a good neighbor in the community they intend to serve. Toni Marie Palmertree, Soprano and Ellen Rissinger, Piano Present “The Heart of a Woman”

Pennsylvania native Toni Marie Palmertree is a soprano praised for her tender, expressive voice (San Francisco Examiner). She has been engaged to sing major roles with leading opera companies in the United States, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera and the San Francisco Opera.
“The Heart of a Woman” is a concert of women composers, celebrating the tenacious women through our history who have broken the mold!

2022 Boyer Legacy Award: Phalika Oum
The Ernest L. Boyer Center annually bestows a Messiah University junior with this award in honor of the legacy of Ernest L. Boyer, Sr. Recipients demonstrate Dr. Boyer’s broad accomplishments and convictions, including his passionate commitment to viewing education as a means to solving societal challenges and his ardent emphasis that leadership is grounded in service.
The selection committee was deeply impressed with Phalika’s service and leadership commitments to racial reconciliation, food equity and climate justice.

Class of 1964 Carlton Wittlinger Award for 2022: Marianne Fitzkee
A graduate of Messiah Junior College in 1935, Dr. Wittlinger returned to Messiah and served over 35 years as a teacher and visionary administrator. The Class of 1964 Wittlinger Award seeks to honor students who demonstrate Dr. Carlton Wittlinger’s broad academic accomplishments, including his qualities of persistence and unselfish dedication, as they pursue and develop their own leadership skills.
The selection committee was deeply impressed by Marianne’s maturity and, in particular, by her commitment to peacemaking.

Both awards carry a $1,000 cash prize.

Responsibilities include:
