ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Thirteen members of the Department of Biological Sciences attended the 98th Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science that was held on the weekend of March 17 – 19 at Gannon University in Erie, PA. Nine students and one faculty member presented results from ongoing research studies. Sean Lapp, mentored and accompanied by John Harms, presented a poster describing analysis of metastasis by pancreatic cancer. Kelly Barr and Abigail Morgan, mentored and accompanied by Jennifer Ness-Myers, presented separate posters that, respectively, described how development of the central nervous system is altered by limiting oxygen availability, and an analysis of gene expression in cultured neural cells. Sarah Bath, mentored and accompanied by Larry Mylin and John Harms, described results of a successful cancer vaccination study. Wei-Jin (Michael) Lin, mentored and accompanied by Larry Mylin, described progress in efforts to develop T4 virus-specific monoclonal antibodies for use in Microbiology course laboratories in a talk. Joel Hart presented a poster describing work conducted with collaborator Abigail Casey to isolate natural antibiotics from plants that was mentored by David Foster and Richard Schaeffer. Tyler Jahraus (also mentored by David Foster) gave a talk in which he described efforts to propagate Virginia bluebells using plant tissue culture techniques. David Foster chaired a session in which he also gave a talk describing how his novel aquaponics system that uses earthworms for biodigestion of animal waste can be employed for education and research. Evan Jerome, mentored by Erik Lindquist and Michael Shin, described efforts to use molecular diagnostic tools to detect a pathogenic fungus among local populations of salamanders in a poster presentation. Katelyn Boyce presented a poster describing ongoing studies conducted under the guidance of Janet Matanguihan that seek to develop better and disease-resistant varieties of flax. All presentations were received with enthusiasm and generated multiple follow-up questions. Angela Hare, dean of the school of science, engineering and health, was introduced to the PAS organization and enjoyed learning from the Messiah group and others while attending a variety of presentations and meetings throughout the weekend. Messiah University will host the 99th Annual Meeting of the PAS on April 12–14, 2024.

Dwayne Safer, associate professor of finance, was elected to the Board of Directors of Americhoice Credit Union headquartered in Mechanicsburg, where he will serve a 3-year term. Americhoice is a community-oriented financial institution with $235 million in assets and five branch offices in the central PA region.

Young Writers and Young Filmmakers summer academic camps
This summer, the Young Writers and Young Filmmakers will hold their academic camps with commuter and resident options.
The Young Filmmakers Workshop provides college-level filmmaking skills for students in rising grades 10-12. Students will leave with an understanding of how to be a writer, director, actor, cinematographer and editor. This camp is being held on June 25 – 30. The Young Writers Workshop provides college-level writing skills development for students in rising grades 9 – 12. The workshop offers intensive courses in creative writing taught by published faculty and writers, poetry readings and other activities. 2022-2023 Library Student Research Grant
The 2022-2023 Library Student Research Grant application deadline is Thursday, April 6. This competitive grant provides Messiah seniors doing their senior honors projects or senior capstone projects an opportunity to experience a taste of graduate school-level research using both Murray Library’s print and digital collections as well as other relevant research materials for their chosen topic located at other institutions or organizations. Proposals are selected for funding by an interdisciplinary panel of judges chaired by Linda Poston, library director. The grantee will be awarded $1,000 in the spring for the fall 2023 academic year. Grant recipient research will culminate with a presentation of the overview and process of their research project at the Friends Annual Dinner or alternative venue as appropriate. 2023 Summer Camps at the Oakes Museum!
This summer we are offering a variety of camps for grades 3rd-12th.
Curator Club and CC2:
Summer camps are weeklong, half-day camps, running 9-noon each day. The cost is $150/camper and there is a before care option for $25.
Curator Club (3rd-5th)
June 19 – 23 – Survive It!
Dig deep into how animals survive a challenging world. Topics will include Build It (habitats), Sense It (vision, smell, and hearing), Move It (locomotion), Eat It (digestion), and Beat It (color and camouflage). We’ll use both the museum collection and the Messiah University campus to explore survival.
July 17-21 – Animals!
Using the museum and the surrounding natural world, each day campers will learn about a different animal group (invertebrates, fish, reptiles/amphibians, birds and mammals).
CC2 (6th-8th)
July 10-14 – Ecology Camp!
The world is complex! Learn about the interactions between different life forms and their environments with hands on observations and experiments in the museum and the living laboratory of campus.
High School Camps:
Camp is 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. each day with a lunch included. Students will eat lunches in Messiah University’s cafeteria or bag lunches to be eaten in the field will be provided.
June 15 and 16 – Vertebrate Anatomy Camp – $200
Learn dissecting skills and use them to gain an overview of vertebrate anatomy by comparing the organ systems and specializations of a variety of representative vertebrates. Students will dissect a variety of vertebrates including: frog, shark and fetal pig. Labs will involve microscopy and tissue examination, along with a variety of other hands-on activities.
June 26 – 30 – Field Biology Camp – $350
Learn how biologists study the natural world! Students will be introduced to the study of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, aquatic communities, terrestrial insects, and our forests in this hands-on field class. Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of field investigative equipment in this class. We will assess small mammal communities with live traps, track turtles with telemetry equipment, assess fish communities by electrofishing, and examine forest floor invertebrate using pitfall traps, to mention a few things.
July 12 – Introduction to Dissection (12:30-4:30) – $75
Learn dissecting skills while dissecting an earthworm, frog and pigeon. This is a great introduction to dissection and anatomy! (This half day program does not include lunch.)

Based on the Brothers Grimm most popular folk tales, “Into the Woods” is a reimagining of what can happen when beloved fairy tale characters are thrown together while pursuing their dreams and wishes. The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning team of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine bring to life characters such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Jack (down from his beanstalk), the Baker and his wife, a pair of princes in search of their brides, and the big bad wolf who is on the lookout for his next meal. It intertwines these stories in increasingly dramatic and humorous ways and asks what comes after the “happily ever after” and whether the journey through the woods was worth it in the end.

A familiar face on television, one of broadcasting’s most respected journalists and host of “CBS Sunday Morning,” Jane Pauley is praised by audiences for her relatable and personal inspirational message. She advocates for people 50+ starting different careers, making a difference and pursuing their dreams. She is also a highly regarded advocate for mental health, children’s health and education issues. She fills the room with optimism and is warmly received by audiences everywhere. Prior to anchoring on CBS, Pauley had a 13-year career on NBC’s “Today” and was also a co-host of “Dateline NBC” for 12 years. Spring Budget Forum
An employee strategic plan update and FY24 budget forum will be presented on Thursday, April 6 in Hostetter Chapel at 3:30 p.m. All employees are encouraged to attend.
The presentation will be led by President Kim Phipps and Gary Nowicki, vice president for finance and planning, who will share the University’s FY24 budget parameters as well as provide a brief update on the University Rising strategic plan.

Employee Cybersecurity Training – Module Two is Available
Module 2 of the required Cyber Security Training is available. To access the training, go to Falcon Link and search “Cybersecurity Training.” The training should take less than 15 minutes to complete.
A total of four training modules will be released this spring. Employees are required to complete all four modules by the end of May.
Maundy Thursday Prayer Vigil
We are holding a 12 hour prayer vigil from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6. We hope to have three people praying for each 15 minute interval. You can pray at a location of your own choosing. Closer to the vigil date, specific intercessory concerns will be sent. Of course, you will have your own concerns for others/situations on and off campus. We are excited to invite high school students (entering 10th through 12th grade in fall 2023) to attend Psychology Camp this year, June 25-30 (5-day camp)! Psychology Camp provides a fun opportunity for students to explore psychology and the question, “Why do humans do what they do?” This year, we are offering both an overnight residential option and a day-camp commuter option. This enriching summer camp environment will help students gain knowledge and explore various branches of psychology including clinical psychology, abnormal psychology, developmental psychology and biopsychology.

This Saturday, March 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Immanuel Church at 800 S. Market St. in Mechanicsburg will host a Spring Market featuring homemade crafts as well as products from some of your favorite vendors. The youth group will be selling peanut butter eggs and other food items. Proceeds benefit the youth group’s upcoming mission trip to Costa Rica.
