ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
On Saturday, Jan. 18, our MU Cybersecurity Competition Team of 8 undergraduate students, coached by Dr. David Bibighaus, placed in the upper third of all schools participating in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition regional qualifier. In this virtual cyber competition, teams work in a simulated business environment to secure systems, while keeping operations online, before attackers break in. The team now qualifies to complete in the in-person regional competition in Washington, DC in March.
______
The National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense designation ceremony for Messiah University took place at the 2024 National Cybersecurity Education Colloquium (NCEC) on Oct. 9 in St. Louis, MO. The designation was presented to Messiah University by representatives of the National Security Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Lynn Bigelow, director of cybersecurity education, represented MU at the event.
With this designation, the opportunities for Messiah students, faculty, and partners are immense. We look forward to building on this recognition by: expanding scholarships and internship opportunities for students, enhancing initiatives in collaboration with government, industry and other institutions, and
strengthening our cybersecurity outreach and workforce development.

I am pleased to announce that Abby Book has accepted the position of director of alumni/parent relations and affinity programs. Abby is a 1998 graduate of Messiah and has served both in the Center for Career and Professional Development and in the Office of Development at Messiah. She is the ideal Messiah Falcon Alum to take on this new challenge. I am also pleased to share that Emily Lint will take on the role of project coordinator for alumni and parent relations and affinity programs. Emily has been in the Development Office for over 10 years and will take her excellent planning and organizational skills with her to the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations. For the immediate future, the main office of Alumni and Parent Relations will move to Old Main, but we will retain the Alumni and Parent Relations reception area in the Phipps AWC.
I am also grateful that Tovah Wilson has agreed to take on duties related to scholarship and Messiah Fund grants from foundations. Tovah – a 2015 undergrad alum and a 2020 grad alum of Messiah – has already been working grants in an ad hoc way; we have now formalized this as part of her position as director of Annual Giving. Melinda Barnes will add duties related to supporting Tovah in her expanded role. I am deeply grateful to Tovah and Melinda for their excellent work and willingness to take on these duties.
Please join me in congratulating Abby, Emily, Tovah, and Melinda on these new and expanded opportunities.

Tech Support: Did you know?
- We understand accidents happen with computers and devices. If something is spilled on your computer, please do not continue to use it. Hold the power button in until all lights turn off, unplug the computer, and contact Tech Support immediately! Continued use after a spill can result in irreparable damage. If the above procedures are followed, there is a much higher chance that we will be able to save the computer.
- Tech Support currently does not encourage the use of New Outlook. There are some features that have not been worked out by Microsoft, such as access to shared mailboxes, in the new version. Please continue to use Classic Outlook. Running into issues with Outlook and unsure which version you are running? Here is a helpful post from Microsoft to find out: What version of Outlook do I have?
- Do you have a question regarding technology and don’t know where to go? You don’t need to know! Simply email techsupport@messiah.edu to generate a ticket with us and we will get it to someone that can help you! This can be for scheduling classroom assistance, computer assistance, Knowledgebase updates, training on some Microsoft applications, Qualtrics, Dynamic Forms, Canvas, or you just need some general guidance on technology.
