ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Department of Safety celebrates new officers, promotions and professional achievements

New events coordinator

Please join us in congratulating Steve Grill on accepting the role of events coordinator. Steve has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to serving our campus community, and we are excited to see him bring his experience and dedication to this important position. We look forward to the positive impact he will have in supporting campus events and strengthening partnerships across the university.

Promotion to senior officer

The Department is also pleased to announce that Jeff Beck has been promoted to senior officer. Jeff has already demonstrated strong leadership within the Department of Safety, and his willingness to take on additional responsibilities has greatly benefited both the department and the campus community. His dedication to professionalism and service makes him well suited for this position.

Welcoming a New Officer

Please join us in welcoming Brian Malloy to the Department of Safety. Brian recently retired from the Baltimore County Police Department and joins our team as a first-shift officer. Brian brings many years of law enforcement experience, strong communication skills and a commitment to public service. We are grateful to have Brian join our team and look forward to the knowledge and experience he brings to our department and campus community.

Celebrating professional achievement

The Department would also like to congratulate Stephen Palmer on successfully passing the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) examination. This accomplishment represents a tremendous investment of time, effort, and perseverance including more than 400 hours of education, training and preparation. Stephen’s commitment to professional development and emergency response excellence reflects the high standards we strive for as a department. We are proud of this achievement and grateful for the expertise and skills he brings to our team.

Publication on families as sources of strength, healing and hope

Dr. Raeann Hamon (distinguished professor of family science and gerontology) and Dr. Chloe Merrill (Weber State U) served as editors of a Groves Monograph on the theme of Families As Sources of Strength, Healing and Hope. Hamon, Dr. Erin Boyd-Soisson (professor of human development and family science), and Jordyn Thompson (FCS ’26) co-authored a chapter in the volume entitled Pedagogical Strategies that Reinforce a Family Strengths Mindset. Announcement of new academic leaders!

Welcome to two new academic leaders! We are pleased to announce that Dr. Melanie (Melly) Howard will join Messiah University as our new associate provost. Dr. Howard brings substantial experience in academic leadership, faculty development, curriculum oversight and the integration of faith and learning. She recently served as associate provost and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Simpson University, where her work has included supporting academic programs, collaborating with faculty leaders and advancing institutional priorities. A scholar of New Testament studies, Dr. Howard earned her Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary and has taught at several institutions, including Fresno Pacific University, Valparaiso University, Princeton Theological Seminary and Messiah University.

As an alumna of Messiah, she also brings a meaningful connection to our university’s mission and community. In this new role, Dr. Howard will help strengthen academic planning, support faculty and school-level leadership, develop external partnerships and contribute to continued excellence across Messiah’s undergraduate and graduate academic programs. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Howard back to the Messiah community.

We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Gregory Ochoa will join Messiah University as the new dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies. Dr. Ochoa brings broad experience in academic affairs, program development, faculty leadership and institutional administration. He has served in significant academic leadership roles, including as interim provost at Notre Dame of Maryland University’s School of Integrative Health and previously as dean of Academic Affairs at Potomac State College of West Virginia University. Dr. Ochoa earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Creighton University, his master’s degree in psychology from Marshall University, and his doctorate in educational leadership from Duquesne University. His background aligns well with the mission and momentum of SGPS, which serves graduate and adult learners through a growing portfolio of programs, degrees and certificates. As dean, Dr. Ochoa will provide leadership for SGPS faculty, programs, student success and strategic growth while continuing Messiah’s commitment to academic excellence and Christian faith. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Ochoa to Messiah University and to this important leadership role.

BID FAREWELL

Retirement farewell

After 13 years of excellence in accounts payable, Terry McLoughlin will retire from Messiah University on July 31.  Terry’s careful work in accounts payable has had a meaningful part in supporting every department on campus, often without many realizing the role she played. The finance hallway will not be the same without her.  We will miss her constant support, her vast knowledge, her kindness and her memory (oh, her memory!).  We wish her complete joy in her next chapter.  Come share an ice cream sundae with us as we celebrate Terry on Tuesday, July 14, between 1-2:30 p.m. in the Messiah Trustees Board Roam (PAWC 310).

Procurement Services would also like to announce that Tina Dillon has joined the Messiah family as the new accounts payable specialist.  Tina brings with her years of experience in the AP field and has been a wonderful addition to the team. We are equally excited for both Terry and Tina as they transition to their next adventures. Join us in congratulating them both.

Farewell to Matt Logan

The creative team in the Office of Marketing and Communications would like to bid farewell to Senior Graphic Designer Matt Logan. During his seven years as a part of the creative team, Matt has done beautiful work for campus clients and for the university as a whole—through his design for The Bridge magazine, graduate programs, the University “See Anew” brand refresh, Messiah Christmas and other special projects campus wide.

Matt will be taking a position at his church where he’ll continue to use his significant gifts. Thankfully, Messiah will continue to benefit from his talents as a coach with the track and field team. Matt’s last day with the university was  Thursday, June 25. Please join us in thanking him for his contributions and in praying for him and his family as he moves forward into what the Lord has planned for this next phase of his career.

OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS

The Comfort Project Foundation recently launched by Messiah graduate

Grief touches all of us at some point in our lives, and during those difficult seasons, support and prayer can make a meaningful difference.

Amber Miller-Garlinger, a 2022 Messiah University graduate, recently launched The Comfort Project Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing spiritual and practical support to individuals navigating grief, including those mourning the loss of a beloved pet. The foundation was started in memory of Amber’s grandfather, Steve Mayo,  who passed last July and dedicated his life to helping and praying for others.

The foundation creates and sends free, individualized comfort kits to those who have recently experienced a loss. In addition, a dedicated prayer team is available to provide encouragement and prayer support during challenging times.

If you or someone you know could benefit from these resources, please consider visiting The Comfort Project Foundation’s website and social media platforms to learn more.
