It was a very good year for design awards for Messiah College!

• Brianna Jewell and Matthew Listor, students in the Design as Service course, received a design award for their work titled: “National Parks in the Chesapeake” created for the National Parks Conservation Association. Brianna and Matthew worked as a design team—designing, illustrating and overseeing production of the multiple panel/poster brochure for national organization NPCA.
• Kathy T. Hettinga received a design award for her work titled “[Im]material, Exhibition Announcement” for the Aughinbaugh Gallery, created for Elizabeth Dubin, gallery director. Photography and artwork for the announcement and poster were created by Brenton Good, Kathy T. Hettinga and the Women’s Studio Workshop.
• The Messiah College students’ and Professor Hettinga’s designs were selected for the 2015 American Graphic Design Awards out of 9,000 entries! The design work will be published in the 250 page Graphic Design: USA’s Design Annual, and on their popular website and digital annuals for desktop, tablet and smartphone. Students Brianna Jewell and Matthew Listor and Professor Hettinga’s design work will be seen alongside design work from Harvard and Yale University, SVA and Parsons, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Adobe, U.S. Olympic Committee and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Editor/publisher Gorden Kaye describes the winning entries as “exceptional.” The 52-year-old competition is presented by Graphic Design USA, the business-to-business magazine for creative professionals. The awards program honors, and encourages recognition of, the power of design to shape commerce, culture and communications.

Personnel changes in graduate programs

As Graduate Programs continues to grow, there are several personnel changes based on new program development, compliance and Messiah’s commitment to excellence. Stephanie Patterson has accepted the position of administrative assistant for occupational therapy, dietetic internship and graduate programs in business and leadership. She will be providing key support to these programs as they intentionally grow to extend the mission of Messiah College, meet the needs of students and seek appropriate accreditation, authorization, etc. Much of her time will be spent preparing the initial application for occupational therapy accreditation in preparation for our first cohort of students who we hope to enroll in the summer of 2017.

As we prepare for the first cohort of DNP students (fall 2016), Ashley Ringquist’s responsibilities have been adjusted to account for this new program. Ashley will now be serving as the administrative assistant to the director of graduate program in nursing and clinical coordinator for the graduate program in nursing. This is an essential role that will ensure that we have quality clinical experiences for our DNP and MSN students and that we are in compliance with various state boards of nursing.

As financial modeling and fiscal management are essential to our graduate programming efforts, we welcome Rebekah Ostby to Messiah College to serve as the graduate programs coordinator. Rebekah is a graduate of Eastern University having earned an undergraduate degree in business management, and she will complete an MBA from Eastern University (August 2016). Most recently, she served as the assistant director of student services/site director of Eastern University, Harrisburg Campus. In her role at Messiah College, she will be responsible for financial modeling, budget preparation, budget monitoring and administrative support projects to support all of our graduate programs.

Dr. Julie Gomboc-Turyan will continue to serve as the assistant director of graduate and nontraditional curriculum, and this restructuring will provide her with dedicated time to address new program/curriculum development, assessment/improvement of current programs and state authorization compliance.

Finally, Dr. Kris Cravey, assistant professor of business, has accepted the appointment of program director of graduate programs in business and leadership. This appointment will be effective January 2016. Kris will continue to serve as a graduate-level faculty member and will be filling the role that was vacated by Rob Pepper, who was recently appointed assistant provost for graduate and nontraditional programs.

Bethesda Mission’s ministries reach men, women and children in the Harrisburg area, seeking to inspire hope in each person. This mission meshes well with the theme for the luncheon this year–the anticipation and hope of Christmas Eve. To participate in our tradition of charitable giving at this event, please bring an item from the following list to the luncheon:

EMPOWER wellness program beginning in January

One of the most successful wellness programs we’ve offered in the past is back! EMPOWER is an on-site weight management program that enables participants to move forward in meeting personal goals, provides helpful knowledge in the areas of physical activity and nutrition and creates a community of support. Through eight weekly meetings, utilizing interactive engagement with a senior health coach and individual sharing, participants are guided into a lifetime of weight management success. Our goal is to run a program at Messiah on Mondays from noon-1 p.m. beginning Jan. 11 and ending Feb. 29.

At least 15 employees must register for us to be able to offer this program so find a friend and sign up today. If you are not able to attend at least six of the eight sessions, we ask you not to register for the program. Employees can register simply by emailing Doug Miller at dmiller@messiah.edu. Deadline for registrations is Dec. 23. It is open to employees and spouses. You do not need to be insured by Capital Blue Cross to participate.

Starter spider plants available for your home or office

Spider plants help to improve indoor air quality and are very easy to take care of. I have several starter plants or “spiderettes” available for free. Solid green leaves or green and white striped leaves. Contact Carrie Barlup at cbarlup@messiah.edu if you’d like a plant or two or more! They make great gifts for the holidays.

Still needed: a few good elves

Each year, in the spirit of the season, employees volunteer to help us at the employee Christmas luncheon. This allows our colleagues in dining services and campus events to more fully participate in the event. If you haven’t participated before, or if you’ve had a great time volunteering in the past, we need you this year…and it’s fun!

We are still in need of a few people to help us clean up after the event, particularly to box up donations. The members of the HR team would really appreciate your help! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Victoria Johnson, human resources, at VJohnson@messiah.edu by Monday, Dec. 14.

President’s Report, new Bridge site

Last year, Messiah’s editorial team redesigned The Bridge, the College’s quarterly alumni magazine. As the second phase of this redesign, The Bridge now launches its new website, messiah.edu/the_bridge, in conjunction with its President’s Report issue. The revamped website will make it easier to enjoy the magazine in its entirety online and to share articles with friends.  In this issue, look for the year-in-review timeline, the financial report and profiles of outstanding alums.

Prefer a hard copy of the President’s Report issue of The Bridge? Printed copies are available in the lounges of Eisenhower and Boyer. As always, additional quantities can be found on the third floor of Old Main in the reception area.
