Messiah College will host a public memorial service, “D. Ray Hostetter: A Celebration of Life,” to honor and remember the College’s sixth president, Dr. D. Ray Hostetter, on Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m. at the Grantham Church, 421 Grantham Rd., Mechanicsburg, Pa. (adjacent to the Messiah College campus). Members of the Hostetter Family, including Audrey Hostetter, former first lady of Messiah College, will be in attendance. Immediately following the service (at approximately noon), all guests are invited to join the Hostetter Family at a luncheon hosted by Messiah College in the Martin Commons, located in the Eisenhower Campus Center. Guests are encouraged to park in the visitor’s parking (Lot VV), located between Eisenhower Campus Center and Old Main.
All are invited to join the Hostetter Family and the Messiah College community on this special day to celebrate the life, service, ministry and contributions of President Hostetter during and beyond his 30-year presidency at Messiah. Heather Keefer, current assistant director of admissions for the visit experience, will be assuming other responsibilities within our division as the assistant director of international admissions effective May 1. Heather has enthusiastically served in the admissions visit coordinator role for the past six years helping to facilitate campus visits for more than 10,000 prospective students during her tenure. We look forward to Heather using her excellent administrative and hospitality skills in recruiting and serving international students and their families. We are pleased to welcome Kristin Thomas as the new admissions visit coordinator. Kristin is a 2009 graduate of Messiah College with a degree in Christian ministries (youth concentration) along with a minor in psychology. She brings a significant amount of administrative and customer service experience to Messiah. Kristin and her husband, Joel, also a Messiah grad, have current Messiah connections in that she coaches the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Team, and he, the Men’s Ultimate Frisbee Team.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Valerie Olson has been named the director of the doctorate of physical therapy at Messiah College. Val will begin immediately in a part-time role this spring and will start full-time in August. Dr. Olson holds degrees from Southern Connecticut Univ., UMass, Univ. of Florida and a Ph.D. from Seton Hall Univ. A Certified Pediatric NDT, Val has over 35 years of experience that includes providing physical therapy for adults and children/infants, serving as a faculty member in professional entry-level physical therapy and Ph.D. programs. She has been on the faculty at Seton Hall Univ., Mercy College, Univ. of Med and Dentistry (Newark, NJ), Kean Univ., and Rutgers Univ. She currently serves as the DPT program director at Dominican College (NY), a program that she developed and led through several accreditation efforts. She is an innovative educator, collaborative leader, engaging teacher and proven scholar. Dr. Olson is very excited to join the Messiah College community and looks forward to integrating her Christian faith with her teaching, leadership and scholarship. Special thanks to the Search Committee (Wendy Cheesman, Jodi Haak and Nancy Woods), Inger Blount and Rebekah Ostby who assisted in the hiring process and to Scott Kieffer who was a key member of the OT/PT working group.

Rachel Cornacchio, associate professor of music, served as guest conductor for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region III Honor Choir the weekend of March 17. Participants included 190 high school students. On March 8-9, Dr. Cornacchio adjudicated the Howard County, Maryland Choral Assessments; she provided feedback to 25 high school choirs and their directors. Dr. Cornacchio also conducted the Dauphin All-County High School Chorus, April 8-9. Students numbering 150 from high schools throughout Dauphin County participated.

School of the Humanities summer academic camps
This summer, the School of the Humanities will hold two academic camps. For the first time, we are having a Young Filmmakers Workshop on June 26- 30. This camp will provide college-level filmmaking skills for students in rising grades 10-12. Students will leave with an understanding of how to be a writer, director, actor, cinematographer and editor. This workshop will be held July 10- 14 and offers intensive courses in creative writing taught by published faculty and writers for students in rising grades 9-12. “Live and learn” this summer with Messiah’s undergraduate online courses
You can make the most of your summer and still earn the college credits you need with the flexibility of Messiah’s undergraduate online courses. Messiah’s eight-week online summer session, which runs June 6-July 31 provides a personal, interactive experience that works around your summer schedule. Messiah’s summer courses are completed in nearly half the time, and are discounted nearly 50 percent as the same courses that are offered during the fall and spring semesters. Courses are open to current students (college-level, qualified homeschooled and high school students), employees, alumni, parents, community friends and anyone who would like to further their education. All courses are taught by Messiah professors, offering an online educational experience that reflects Messiah’s commitment to academic excellence. “Spring Fever” fundraiser for Nicaragua mission team
On Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23, the Nicaragua mission team (through the Agape Center for Service-Learning) will be doing assisting with your spring cleaning needs! First, they are offering babysitting from 6-10 p.m. on Friday evening. You can sign up to have two students come to your home and hang out with your kiddo(s). In addition, on Saturday the students are also serving by assisting in any spring yard/house work you may have!

Graduate thesis presentation
Graduate Program in Education student Lilian Schultz will deliver her thesis presentation, “English as a Foreign Language in Malaysia: Voices from Malaysian English Teachers,” on Tuesday, April 19, beginning at 4:15 p.m. in Boyer 131. In this qualitative research study, Ms. Schultz explores how Malaysian English teachers feel about their professional lives, what issues these teachers see as having significant impact on their work, and what kinds of resources or development they need in order to support their profession. Ms. Schultz will address these questions through her investigation into the experiences of five Malaysian English teachers who have chosen to teach in public schools in Malaysia, because they want to make a difference in the lives of the students. Their frustrations and their joy become evident as they share their journey of teaching in schools that are divergently different. Please join us for this graduate student thesis presentation. It doesn’t take a lot to make a big impact on the amount of scholarship aid that is available to our students. When you “pay it forward” to our students and give during the annual employee giving campaign, you are eligible for several special drawings. During the first week of this campaign, any employee who gives to any area on campus is eligible to win one of two gift cards to local restaurants and gas stations. During the second week, any employee who gives to the Messiah Fund will be eligible for a drawing to win the second gift card. During the final week, any employee who has given through the payroll deduction program will be eligible for a drawing of a reserved parking place for one semester in your assigned parking lot. The grand prize winner will be announced on May 2. Any employee who participates in the payroll deduction program is permitted to wear jeans on the last Friday of every month. Join us May 4 at the Employee Recognition Reception
Please join us on Wednesday, May 4, as we gather to celebrate the commitment of those employees who have reached significant service milestones. This year’s Employee Recognition Reception will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in Brubaker Auditorium. We will have a time of refreshments and fellowship until 10:20 a.m., accompanied by a student brass quintet. Conveying of awards will follow. The list of employees to be honored can be viewed here.
