New change for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Have you heard about the new change for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? For the 2017-2018 school year, students can file the FAFSA as early as Oct. 1. They no longer have to wait until Jan. 1, 2017. As an employee of Messiah College, this may not directly impact you, but we want to let you know what is happening so that you will be aware of the changes if you have the opportunity to discuss this with your students or their parents. More information about this change and what it means for Messiah College students can be found on our Early FAFSA/Prior Year webpage. If you have any questions about this change, please don’t hesitate to contact the Financial Aid Office at finaid@messiah.edu.

Messiah College Press and Postal Services announce new partnership with PrintReleaf

Beginning Oct.1, a new software program will be calculating how many sheets of paper students and employees use each day on Messiah owned copiers and printers. This information will then be used to certifiably reforest Messiah College’s paper consumption. New trees will be planted equivalent to our paper use at reforestation projects across the globe. Look for the PrintReleaf stickers on every machine and be sure to watch the 2-minute video showing you how this program works at www.printreleaf.com. Look for future e-mails and visit the College Press web and social media pages to learn more. Or, come see us at Sustain-a-fest on Oct. 7 where we will also be sharing information about our FSC certification and “close the loop” program.

Fall break reminder

To All Employees:

This is a reminder to all employees that fall break for students begins Thursday, Oct. 20 and continues through Sunday, Oct. 23. As noted on the Office of Human Resources and Compliance holiday schedule, the fall break holiday for employees will occur on either Thursday, Oct. 20 or Friday, Oct. 21 (http://www.messiah.edu/info/20590/benefits/1014/holiday_schedule

Employees who are eligible for other paid holidays, as outlined in section 3.14 (Paid Holidays) of the Employee Policy and Procedure Manual are eligible for the fall break holiday if it occurs during the employee’s regularly-scheduled assignment.  http://www.messiah.edu/download/downloads/id/1307/Section_3_Benefits.pdf

Time off must be coordinated through an employee’s supervisor to assure offices remain open during both of these days. Every attempt should be made to provide the holiday to eligible employees on one of the two approved days. In the event that coverage for special events or projects does not allow an employee to have time off on one of the two approved days, any exception must be approved by the supervisor and the time off must be used within the pay period that includes the fall break holiday.

Attention Mac users

OS X 10.12 (Sierra) has been released. As with any new operating system there are always bugs discovered the first several weeks and even months after its release. Therefore, ITS is requesting all staff who have been assigned a Mac computer NOT attempt to upgrade to version 10.12 as it may be several months until we have a good handle on issues that may exist in our environment and how to resolve them.

ITS announces administrative assistant

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Diane Hunsinger as the administrative assistant to Information Technology Services. Diane will provide administrative support to the vice president and to the directors in addition to continuing some of her previous duties of supporting Faltron test scoring and copyright as well as managing the Hoffman drop-offs with College Press and Disability Services. Please congratulate Diane on her new role.

Grandparents Day 2016

Thursday, Oct. 6 will mark our eighth annual Grandparents Day. The purpose of this wonderful event is to allow the grandparent(s) and/or elderly mentors of current students the opportunity to experience firsthand what it is like to attend Messiah College and to become familiar with our campus and all it has to offer. Please be sure to warmly welcome our grandparents when you see them on campus. Any questions about this event can be directed to Yonette Schneider, special events and donor stewardship coordinator, at YSchneid@messiah.edu.
