Visiting alumni announcement

The HDFS department is having an alumni career panel on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The event will take place in Parmer Cinema from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. A light dinner will follow in the Boyer Atrium from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Participating alumni include Talia Miller ’16, Barbara Bingham ’03, Ashtin Stoner ’15 and Megan Dubbs DeGruchy ’14.

Family concert with Messiah College Symphony Orchestra

The Messiah College Symphony Orchestra proudly presents a Family Concert for ALL members of the family (even the very young and the very loud)! This one-hour concert will include selections by Schubert, Beethoven and Ravel, and the audience will be introduced to the instruments of the orchestra through Russell Peck’s Thrill of the Orchestra. After the performance, children in the audience will be invited to try many of the instruments in an Instrument Petting Zoo. The concert will take place, Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m., in Parmer Hall, located in the High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. Admission is free.

October is Hacktober – phishing

Phishing scams are normally fraudulent emails designed to trick the user into responding or clicking a link for the user to provide an ID and password. Spear phishing are attacks which are more pointed and have more detailed information in them, such as your place of employment, a boss’s name, etc. Phishing emails normally contain images that look legitimate like UPS, EBay, Google, Microsoft, etc. They also include links to invalid websites or infected attachments. Messiah College’s semi-annual shred day – Oct. 25

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, Shredding Solutions will provide a shred truck on campus. The truck will be located in the service area parking spots located outside Hoffman Hall and will be available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed. What can be shredded? All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data, all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED and documents in binders will not be accepted.

Shredding instructions: Loose or small volume shredding needs (less than six banker boxes)- Please bring all loose or small volume of paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two (2) hours scheduled; plan to bring paper between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Please note, the shredding truck will be leaving promptly at 1 p.m., so we suggest arriving by 12:45 p.m. You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.

Special shredding needs: If your department has a specific shredding need, special arrangements can be made by calling John Luft at ext. 6723. All shredding arrangements must be made prior to the close of business Friday, Oct. 21. For special requests or for other questions, please contact John Luft.

Grandparent’s Day 2016 – THANK YOU!

On behalf of the Office of Development, we offer our sincerest gratitude to all the students and employees for warmly welcoming over 650 grandparents to our Messiah College campus on Thursday, Oct. 6. We are deeply appreciative for the gracious hospitality shown to our grandparent guests by the campus community in spite of challenges brought by such a large number of visitors. Grandparent’s Day is a great team effort and we are thankful for our colleagues in conference services, dining services, college ministries, public safety, Oakes Museum, School of the Arts, residence life, admissions and the advancement division for making this eighth annual event such a success. Also, thank you to our COE colleagues for accommodating some extra “student” visitors in your classroom!

Important reminder to faculty – 2017 J-Term & spring semester work submission deadlines set

Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2017 J-Term and Spring Semester work submission deadlines have been set. Please coordinate your needs for your courses with the deadline dates located at on the ITS blog at the following link: http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/7810

Procedure review:

1. Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by the administrative assistant to ITS (Diane Hunsinger) approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack in College Press.
2. Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_material. The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
3. It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager at the Campus Store and Textbook Express.
4. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

Online networking opportunity for students and alumni

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting three monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The three virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month.

For the month of October, we are hosting the following networking receptions:

Thursday, Oct. 20: 8- 9:30 p.m. (Communication, Media and Public Relations Networking), for alumni and students

Friday, Oct. 28: Noon-1:30 p.m. (Messiah College Young Alumni Networking), for alumni

Monday, Oct. 31: Noon- 1:30 p.m. (Connecting Messiah Alumni in central PA), for alumni

After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing them to quickly meet new people, exchange contact information and walk away with several new connections they may not have had before. Each chat is saved, making it simple to look back at the chat history, review notes, gather contact information and follow up. We hope that these connections lead to more in-person connections. Participants have the chance to share their wisdom, knowledge and life experiences, and to exchange career tips and build their professional network–all online, from any device. Graduate thesis presentation

The School of Graduate Studies Master of Arts in Higher Education is pleased to invite members of the campus community to hear a thesis presentation from Joanna Barnhouse, who will receive her M.A. in Higher Education this December. Joanna’s graduate thesis presentation is Retention Factors for Early Career Fundraising Officers (see her thesis abstract below). RSVP to Tina Keul at tkeul@messiah.edu by Oct. 25. “The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing retention for frontline fundraising staff with less than 16 months of experience in their current positions. An exploration of these factors grew from existing research of Penelope Burk regarding the costs of turnover in frontline fundraising positions. In order to explore this issue, the following research questions were posed as part of a qualitative study. (1) What experiences and challenges threaten the retention of early career gift officers?; (2) What experiences encourage gift officers to persevere in their roles?; and (3) What types of institutional support may help gift early career officers overcome challenges? Four fundraisers managing a portfolio of donors were interviewed and transcripts were analyzed. Retention factors were identified and grouped into three overarching themes: office culture, confidence in ability, and external personal factors. Implications for practice include conducting stay interviews as part of annual reviews, incorporating professional development, improving management and recognition and reward for excellent work.”

An Evening with Ken Burns on Nov. 15 – “American Lives”

Ken Burns has been making films for almost 40 years and has directed and produced some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Come hear Burns discuss some of his most fascinating subjects including Thomas Jefferson, Lewis & Clark and Frank Lloyd Wright on Tuesday evening, Nov. 15, in Parmer Hall. In his presentation, “American Lives,” he shares with the audience how biography works and provides insight into his master storytelling process. The late historian Stephen Ambrose said of Burns’ films, “More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source.” Burns’ films have won 14 Emmy Awards and two Oscar nominations. His current projects include films about Jackie Robinson, Ernest Hemingway and the history of stand-up comedy. Tickets are $25. Student tickets (with Messiah College student ID) are $10. Fauré Requiem to be performed at Messiah College

Messiah College is hosting a special performance of Fauré Requiem to be performed on Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. in Parmer Hall. Maestro Stuart Malina and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra will join the Susquehanna Chorale, ensemble-in-residence at Messiah, along with the Messiah College Concert Choir and soloists for a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s beautiful and comforting Requiem. The program will open with Berlioz’s “Symphonie fantastique.” The Susquehanna Chorale and the Messiah College Concert Choir are conducted by Linda Tedford, director of choral activities and artist-in-residence at Messiah College.
