NEWS:

Brian Swartz, Ph.D., P.E., chair of the Department of Engineering, has been selected by the Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council to receive the 2016 Young Engineer of the Year Award. Brian is a member of the Association for Bridge Construction and Design (ABCD), Susquehanna Chapter, the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Rachel Cornacchio, associate professor of music, conducted the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s 2016 District 1 Choral Festival in Pittsburgh. Over 180 high school students rehearsed over the course of three days, with a culminating performance of repertoire focusing on how music can serve as a source of inspiration in difficult times.

The Department of Music hosted three off-campus music professionals to adjudicate the Finals Concert of the Keith Lance Kuhlman Performance Award on Sunday evening, February 28. Nine music majors, of varying instruments and voice types, competed for a $400 award. Please join the Department of Music in congratulating the winner, Jacob Mandell, tenor (student of Dr. Damian Savarino) and honorable mention, Katrina Neyman, French horn (student of Dr. Michael Harcrow).

Homecoming Weekend 2016

Please save the date for Homecoming Weekend 2016, held on October 14 and 15! As a reminder, all events occurring during Homecoming weekend must be approved by and planned through the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations. If you have plans for an event and have not been in contact with our office, please reach out to Shardé Hardy by e-mail or phone (ext. 2490) by May 2. The 2016 Homecoming Weekend schedule will be made available online by July 1 at www.messiah.edu/homecoming. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We look forward to sharing this time of celebration with you and our alumni community!

Spring break housing

Over spring break, the residence halls and apartments will lock down from 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 4 to 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 12. Residential students can stay during break, but must be granted break card access to get into their building. If you have students you are requiring to stay during any part of spring break (i.e. athletes, ensembles, etc.) please send an email to housing@messiah.edu with the student name, ID number, dates on campus and reason for staying.

Graduate Programs welcomes Danielle Seibert

Graduate Programs is pleased to welcome Danielle Seibert as the occupational therapy academic fieldwork coordinator/clinical instructor in OT. A graduate of College Misericordia, Danielle brings with her 15 years of experience in occupational therapy. She has also served as youth director at her church. Along with teaching responsibilities, Danielle will be responsible for placement of occupational therapy students in clinical and community sites for level I and level II fieldwork experiences. Please join us in welcoming Danielle to the Messiah community!

Reservations for The Martin Commons

Summer student employment reminder

If your department plans to hire summer student employees, please remember that summer hiring proposals are due by March 11. All summer student hires must be processed via a summer hiring proposal through the jobs.messiah.edu system, even if the student currently works for your department or has worked previously for your department. Please remember that students that attended the summer job fair must be given first priority to all new or replacement position openings. If you have any questions or need any assistance with summer hiring, or would like a list of job fair attendees, please contact Belinda Conrad, bconrad@messiah.edu or ext. 2900.

Safety contest – final month

Congratulations to Wendy McElwee, the winner of the Workplace Safety Committee’s Safety Contest question for February. She will receive a $50 gift card. The question for February was: As a general rule, how quickly will a fire double in size? The correct response was every 60 seconds. This is the final month for the contest. Watch your email on Monday, March 7 for the next question and your last chance to win $50!

African drumming and dance performance

Azaguno, a colorful and vibrant multi-ethnic African drumming and dance ensemble directed by Paschal Yao Younge and Zelma Badu-Younge, and featuring more than 100 Messiah College students, will perform on Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m. in Parmer Hall. The concert will focus on the performance of traditional African, African-American, Caribbean and Latin American music and dance. Through the drum, voice, dance and other visual art forms and paraphernalia, Azaguno brings to the stage a unique African theatrical experience. Tickets are required: messiah.edu/tickets

There are many additional opportunities to participate:

  • Tuesday, March 15, 6-8 p.m., Parmer Hall: African drumming clinic; free and open to the public.
  • Wednesday, March 16, 6-8 p.m., Climenhaga Dance Studio: African dance clinic; free and open to the public.
