Dr. Tiffani Worthy, instructor in the graduate program in business and leadership, was a recently recognized honoree in the Philadelphia Business Journal as one of the top 40 under 40. The 40 under 40 program aims to identify and recognize current and future leaders in various industries and in the community (Philadelphia Business Journal). The Business Journal received over 400 nominations this year, setting a new record. In addition to teaching at Messiah College, Worthy is actively engaged in leading her non-profit All Things Are Possible (ATAP) Foundation, as well as serving as an executive in training and development for one of the largest family-owned businesses in the nation. The Teaching and Learning Initiative is pleased to announce that Cynthia Wells will be continuing on as a teaching and learning fellow for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. Wells is associate professor of higher education and director of The Ernest L. Boyer Center at Messiah College. Her graduate level teaching has focused on the history and philosophy of higher education, equity issues and curriculum. She has also taught undergraduate courses within the general education curriculum. Her range of teaching experiences and research interests will continue to be an asset in her role as teaching and learning fellow. Wells will continue working with Amy Ginck and Jennifer Fisler to support excellent teaching at Messiah College.

Key Services reminder
This is a reminder from Key Servicesthat any keys you hold and no longer need should be returned to Key Services in the Lenhert Maintenance building before the end of the spring semester so they can be removed from your name/responsibility. The Lenhert front office is open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Also, if you are a supervisor to students in work study positions, internships, etc., please remind your students that their keys need to be returned prior to their departure for summer (no later than May 12). It is the supervisor’s responsibility to ensure the students turn in their keys before leaving campus. Failure to do so will result in the department being charged the associated fines. Any keys, regardless of whether they are held by employees or students, are subject to a minimum $75 fee per key if they are not returned and/or lost. Physics demo show
The Messiah College Physics Club invites you to a fun and interactive demo show on Friday, April 21 at 6 p.m. in Alexander Auditorium (Frey 110). Join us May 3 at the Employee Recognition Reception
Please join us on Wed., May 3, as we gather to celebrate the commitment of those employees who have reached significant service milestones. This year’s Employee Recognition Reception will be held from 10- 11:30 a.m. in Brubaker Auditorium. We will have a time of refreshments and fellowship until 10:20 a.m., accompanied by The Grantham Brass Project. Conveying of awards will follow. In addition to recognizing service milestones, we will also be announcing the recipients of the Pride in Performance, the Presidential Awards, and the Team Falcon Award. Wellness DayWe hope you will plan now to participate in Wellness Day events on Thurs., April 27. There will be events happening outside of Lottie from 2-6 p.m., including 9-square in the air, a GaGa ball pit, Spikeball, Pilates, POUND, and music by a Messiah Guitar Ensemble beginning at 4:45 p.m. Indoors, from 2-5 p.m., will be our Wellness Fair in Brubaker featuring valuable health information as well as numerous health screenings. Everything is free. Attendees will also qualify for our prize drawings!
Benefit series in partnership with Capital View Wealth Management
The Office of Human Resources and Compliance is conducting a Benefits Series in partnership with Capital View Wealth Management. This series will run from April to June and will address different topics related to benefits at Messiah College. School of Science, Engineering and Health Symposium
The 14th Annual Symposium of the School of Science, Engineering and Health will be held on Friday, April 28 in Frey, Jordan and Kline academic buildings. More than 150 students from within the school will participate in oral and poster presentations in sessions that are scheduled throughout the day. Celebrate the work, creativity and innovation reflected in the rich and diverse variety of oral and poster presentations. Many presentations will describe basic or applied research projects and represent the culmination of months (or years) of effort by graduating seniors. A number of presentations will highlight how talents and resources are being used to address needs in the developing world. Plan to join us to celebrate the accomplishments of the students!
School of the Humanities summer academic camps
This summer, the School of the Humanities will hold three academic camps. New this year is FaithWorks@MessiahCollege, which is a unique summer experience connecting faith and service. This camp will be held on July 16 – July 22 and is open to high school students. Their website is http://www.messiah.edu/info/22711/faithworks.
The Young Filmmakers Workshop was a huge success last year and we only have five more openings for this year! The dates are June 25-29. This camp will provide college-level filmmaking skills for students in rising grades 10-12. Students will leave with an understanding of how to be a writer, director, actor, cinematographer and editor. For the sixth year, we will have the Young Writers Workshop. This workshop will be held July 16- 20 and offers intensive courses in creative writing taught by published faculty and writers. VISTA at Messiah College
Urban early childhood education and community engagement with a purpose! Work to develop parent connections and programs with the intention of improving students’ academic achievement.
The purpose of this project is to improve early childhood school readiness by building the capacity of community partners to deliver educational programs that effectively reach parents and caregivers. During a three-year period, this project will resource and equip parents with the knowledge and skills needed to support their student’s academic efforts through the establishment of an early childhood education program and curriculum for school readiness. Research demonstrates that as barriers to school readiness are broken down, the likelihood increases for students to escape poverty through improved academic achievement, which better positions students on a pathway to higher education.
This project will build the capacity of community organizations (e.g. Salvation Army) to effectively reach parents and caregivers of K-4 children at Downey Elementary School, located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In 2016-2017 Downey served 405 K-4 students, of which 99.5 percent were from economically, disadvantaged families. By directing educational programming to parents and caregivers, new opportunities will be created for parents to meet around shared values (e.g. improving opportunities for their children to succeed). When these shared values are celebrated, and access to new knowledge and resources are created it can inspire and empower parents to work together, which can result in a collective social power that forms bonds within the community, changing the climate around the school.
What will the VISTA do?
The VISTA will familiarize themselves with the community and community partners to gain a better understanding of the current landscape of parental engagement. Following this, the VISTA will meet with the Parent Organization to access community needs and to continue identifying parental needs that are connected to the child’s academic achievement in order to develop the appropriate parental programming.
The VISTA will work with community partners, the Salvation Army, and Messiah College to deliver a series of school readiness workshops for Downey parents during the fall of 2017 and begin developing an orientation program for the 2018 school year. The VISTA will continue to create a plan for the sustainability of the programming by developing the framework for future workshops/orientation programs and preparing parent leaders and community partners to assume programming responsibilities.
Finally, the VISTA will celebrate shared values among parents to improve student achievement and inspire parents to become more involved in the school readiness of their children.
Housing is provided along with a small meal allowance.
