Beth Transue ’93, librarian/instruction coordinator, delivered a presentation about China titled “Armchair Travel: Heading East: A Traveler’s Perspective on China” at the Simpson Public Library, Cumberland County Library System, on April 19. She shared her experiences from the 2016 cross-cultural course to China and her 2-week solo trip to Beijing in 2014. She discussed visiting the Forbidden City, Great Wall, Summer Palace, hutongs, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and her perspectives on daily travel within China.

Last season’s Messiah College production of THE TENDER LAND (Copland) received 2nd Place (tie) in the American Prize Opera Production Competition. The production was produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance and directed by Dr. Damian Savarino (music and stage) and Dr. Timothy Dixon (conductor). Other institutions with placing productions were The University of Michigan (1st Place), The University of South Dakota (2nd Place tie) and SUNY Purchase (3rd Place). Since 2014, the opera productions at Messiah College have received several national awards. The National Opera Association awarded 1st Place to our production of Menotti’s THE MEDIUM in 2014, as well as another 2nd Place tie to the TENDER LAND production in 2016. Dr. Eric Rawson, professor of exercise science and chair of the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science, will be an invited guest and speaker at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Consensus Meeting on Dietary Supplements in Lausanne, Switzerland May 3-5. Rawson will present research and provide input into the development of an IOC Expert Statement on dietary supplements.

Need a print project for fall?
As we near the end of the academic year, we ask that you think about the promotional pieces you will need before classes start in the fall. Most projects initiated within the Office of Marketing and Communications reach an off campus audience of 200 or more recipients, and include things like postcards, newsletters, self-mailers and event invitations. In addition, but not limited to, OMC designs billboards, on-campus marquees and site marketing, all seen by prospective students. A minimum of five weeks is requested from the time initial content is submitted to OMC. To begin your marketing projects, please fill out our electronic project initiation request form at www.messiah.edu/projectinitiation.
Mennonite Central Committee and Sustainability partnership
Do you have unused or unwanted items in your house you’ve been meaning to donate?!? Bring them to campus to donate them to Mennonite Central Committee May 4 – 13. Find one of the four trailers on campus near the residence halls, which will be opened from 10 a.m. – 7p.m. during finals and move out week. Please do not bring items to the Office of Sustainability. To help reduce the amount of waste generated on campus during the week of move out, the Office of Sustainability and Residence Life partnered with MCC to recover all those resources that are otherwise trashed. Items collected include: clothing (wearable and unwearable); household items (small appliances, kitchen utensils, etc.); cardboard, books, paper, magazines; shoes; electronics; unopened food; unopened hygiene products; and more! All donations will benefit MCC’s development, relief, and missions work around the world. Questions can be directed to sustainability@messiah.edu or by calling ext. 4785.
School of Science, Engineering and Health Symposium
The 14th Annual Symposium of the School of Science, Engineering and Health will be held on Friday, April 28 in Frey, Jordan and Kline academic buildings. More than 150 students from within the school will participate in oral and poster presentations in sessions that are scheduled throughout the day. Celebrate the work, creativity and innovation reflected in the rich and diverse variety of oral and poster presentations. Many presentations will describe basic or applied research projects and represent the culmination of months (or years) of effort by graduating seniors. A number of presentations will highlight how talents and resources are being used to address needs in the developing world. Plan to join us to celebrate the accomplishments of the students!
The Department of Education hosts Erika Hufford’s student honors presentation
On Thursday, April 27, Erika Hufford will present her research entitled, “Hierarchy of Skills for Effective Math Intervention.” Hufford’s project focuses on how curriculum, instruction and assessment are connected for students who struggle with math concepts. She conducted a two-part project during the course of this past year. First, she researched and determined a hierarchy of math skills that students should have mastered by the end of third grade. Second, she designed interventions to align with each of the desired skills that could be implemented for struggling students. The presentation will be held in Boyer 432, from 4:30-5:30 pm. There will be refreshments!

Leadercast Simulcast May 5
Messiah College Graduate Program in Business and Leadership is partnering with Suasion LLC to host a live simulcast of the nationally renowned Leadercast event on May 5 at Central Penn College. We would like to offer any Messiah College graduate student, faculty or staff member who is interested in attending this event a discounted group rate of $85 for the Simulcast or $93.75 for the simulcast and the post event at Messiah. Oakes Museum leadership transition
With the retirement of Ken Mark this month after 16 years of leadership as director of the Oakes Museum of Natural History, Angela Hare, SSEH dean, is pleased to announce that Helena Cicero, current Oakes educational coordinator, has agreed to serve as interim museum director through the 2017-18 academic year. Beth Erikson, current Curator Club coordinator, will serve as museum coordinator for the interim year, and Sara Donovall, current museum docent, will be visit facilitator. This is a strong leadership team of individuals who are highly committed to the Museum’s mission and who bring years of experience to their roles. Join their dean in extending congratulations!

Fiscal Year End 2017 – financial close checklist and calendar
Messiah College’s fiscal year 2017 (FY17) ends June 30. The attached end of fiscal year processing checklist and calendar are provided to support department efforts to record charges in the appropriate fiscal year. Departments are requested to begin review of FY17 financial activity now and submit journal voucher/transfer requests to accounting@messiah.edu. To further assist departments in processing end of year transactions and record keeping between FY2017 and FY2018, the Accounting Office is offering two fiscal year end information sessions:

How did we determine whom to recognize at the reception next Wed., May 3?
Please join us on Wed., May 3 as we gather to celebrate the commitment of those employees who have reached significant service milestones. We thought it might be helpful to share how we determine who has reached service milestones, as we have not included this information recently in the Intercom.
Employees who meet the following criteria are recognized:
- Full-time and part-time employees
- Employees who will reach a significant service year milestone (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc.) on or before Sept. 15 of that year.
- Employees who are re-hired by the College will be credited with service years earned prior to an approved break in service.
- Temporary or occasional assignments are not considered when calculating service years.
This year’s Employee Recognition Reception will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in Brubaker Auditorium. We will have a time of refreshments and fellowship until 10:20 a.m., accompanied by The Grantham Brass Project. Conveying of awards will follow. The list of employees to be honored can be viewed here. In addition to recognizing service milestones, we will also be announcing the recipients of the Pride in Performance, the President’s Awards, and the Team Falcon Award.
