Last season’s Messiah College production of THE TENDER LAND (Copland) received 2nd Place (tie) in the American Prize Opera Production Competition. The production was produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance and directed by Dr. Damian Savarino (music and stage) and Dr. Timothy Dixon (conductor). Other institutions with placing productions were The University of Michigan (1st place), The University of South Dakota (2nd place tie) and SUNY Purchase (3rd place). Congratulations to Bill Althoff, College Press and postal services production manager, who successfully achieved his USPS Mailpiece Design Professional certification. Bill is now certified to review designed publications intended for mailing and render judgments in regards to USPS standards. The course Bill completed included topics such as postal addressing standards, classes of mail and processing categories, barcode formats, reply mail, and designing for automation.

Tim Knapp will resign his role as instructional designer on May 19. Tim helped lead our Office 365 roll out, providing support to offices considering a transition to the cloud, and training to the campus for specific applications. He was also deeply invested with students and faculty in their use of Ensemble and helped lead our current transition from Adobe Connect to Zoom. He accomplished all of this while at the same time providing instructional design leadership to the graduate and undergraduate faculty. Tim’s central mission has always been to implement emerging technologies in line with the College’s mission and support learning processes across the campus. He will be missed. Please take the opportunity between now and May 19 to wish him well.

Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement information for employees

Undergraduate Commencement: Fri., May 12- Sat., May 13

Schedule and details

The 2017 Undergraduate Commencement weekend schedule of events for Fri., May 12, and Sat., May 13, is posted online at www.messiah.edu/UGcommencement. This year, this website will also provide a link to the College’s first live video stream of the Commencement ceremony. Members of the Community of Educators should have already received information from the Provost’s Office regarding their participation in Commencement weekend. Faculty, staff and administrators who are participating in the Commencement ceremony itself should have received an email memo regarding their role in the ceremony from the Commencement Committee.

Baccalaureate service/reception parking

• Prior to the Baccalaureate service and reception, traffic personnel will direct guests to designated parking areas on campus. College employees do not receive reserved parking for Baccalaureate.
• The Department of Safety asks that all guests walk from where traffic control personnel direct you to park. (Shuttle service is not provided Friday evening.)
• To avoid safety hazards, please do not stop in the middle of the roadway to drop off your party. If you have questions regarding parking or drop-off locations for guests with a disability, please contact Events Officer Liz Williams at ext. 3984.
• Please note that Baccalaureate is a ticketed event; see the Commencement web site for details.

Commencement day parking

Employee parking 

• Members of the Community of Educators and other employees who are marching in the processional or participating in the Commencement ceremony will receive a reserved parking pass via campus mail. Employees MUST show their parking pass to traffic control personnel upon entering campus to be directed to their designated reserved parking areas. All other employees who will be working the Commencement ceremony should ask their supervisor where their designated parking area will be that day.
• Members of the COE and other employees coming to campus that morning should use the Mill Road/South Entrance in order to avoid congestion with visitor traffic.
• Due to the significantly increased volume of traffic on campus for Commencement, the Department of Safety strongly encourages all employees to arrive on campus no later than 8:15 a.m. in order to alleviate being delayed in traffic, and to assist that they are directed to their reserved parking areas on campus. It is also extremely important to follow all parking direction and instruction from safety personnel while entering and leaving campus, as traffic conditions can change quickly and officers are not able to stop traffic flow to have conversation with individual drivers.
• An important reminder—employees are not permitted to schedule vendor visits, pick-ups or deliveries on the day of Commencement as it interferes with the increased and altered traffic flow on campus that day.

Guest parking

• A shuttle service will transport all other guests between their parking areas and the athletic complex both before and after the Commencement ceremony. Read additional details on guest and disability parking.

Leadercast Simulcast May 5

Messiah College Graduate Program in Business and Leadership is partnering with Suasion LLC to host a live simulcast of the nationally renowned Leadercast event on May 5 at Central Penn College. We would like to offer any Messiah College graduate student, faculty or staff member who is interested in attending this event a discounted group rate of $85 for the Simulcast or $93.75 for the simulcast and the post event at Messiah. This year’s simulcast, themed Powered by Purpose features Daniel Pink, Henry Cloud, Suzy Welch, Andy Stanley, Molly Fletcher, Jess Ekstrom, Jim McKelvey, Donald Miller and Tyler Perry. Senior class invites you to dine at Baker’s

P-Card update

In order to provide a more seamless coordination of purchasing services, administration of the P-Card program will move to Procurement Services beginning May 1. Stephanie Sechrist will assume the role of P-Card administrator. Please continue to use the dedicated P-Card email, pcard@messiah.edu and telephone extension, ext. 2211, so we can respond to your P-Card needs in the most time effective manner. Tracy Thomas will continue in her position as administrative assistant to the vice president for finance and planning, David Walker.

Important reminder to faculty

Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2017 fall semester work submission deadlines have been set. Please coordinate your needs for your courses with the deadline dates located at on the ITS blog at the following link: http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/7810

Procedure review: Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by Diane Hunsinger approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your coursepack at College Press. Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_materials

The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your coursepack or lab manual. It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a coursepack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager, Campus Store and Textbook Express. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials, and the instructor has the assurance that their coursepack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.
