Senior biochemistry major Dan Haas will be presenting his Departmental Honors Research, entitled, “Fluorescent Tagging of HIV-1 Using a Novel Recombinant Protein,” on Friday, April 20, at 4 p.m. in Kline 327. Dan has worked on this project for over two years, under the mentorship of Dr.’s Emily Farrar, Matt Farrar and Jesse Kleingardner. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites you to join us for this presentation. Refreshments will be served prior to the seminar.

Paula Conner Maynard, associate registrar, School of Graduate Studies, attended the 2018 American Association for Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) conference in Orlando, Florida March 25-28. In collaboration with the registrar from Valparaiso University Law School and associate university registrar from the University of the Pacific, she was the chief presenter for a well-attended session focusing on curriculum management, governance and the role of the registrar’s office.

AACRAO is a non-profit professional association of more than 11,000 higher education professionals who represent approximately 2,600 institutions in more than 40 countries. Its mission is to provide professional development and guidelines for higher education officials regarding the best practices in records management, admissions, enrollment management, administrative information technology and student services for the higher education community, from large public institutions to small, private liberal arts colleges.

The Steering Committee of the Sawyer Digital Proficiency Initiative is pleased to announce the fellows selected for 2018-19. This inaugural group will explore ways in which technology can support and enhance their pedagogy, thus improving the digital proficiency of their students. These fellows will participate in a summer intensive where they will gain foundational knowledge similar to that of students who register for this fall’s Digital Proficiency Certificate program. Fellows will build upon the intensive by continuing to collaborate through a professional learning community (PLC) during the academic year. Fellows also agree to share from their experience and the results of their project with their peers on campus.

Molly Bletz ’11 has published an article with other scientists in a prestigious academic journal on the topic, “Shifts in disease dynamics in a tropical amphibian assemblage are not due to pathogen attenuation.” This study appears in the March 30 edition of Science.

Spring Shred Day

Shredding Solutions will be on campus for confidential document shredding

On Tuesday, April 17, Shredding Solutions will provide a shred truck on campus. The truck will be located in the service area parking spots located outside Hoffman Hall and will be available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed. What can be shredded?

All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data, all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED and documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.) Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding.

Shredding instructions Normal shredding needs: Please bring all paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two (2) hours scheduled; plan to bring paper between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (please note, the shredding truck will be leaving promptly at 1 p.m.; we suggest arriving no later than 12:45 p.m.) Special shredding needs: If your department has specific needs, special arrangements can be made by calling Allen Snook, IT security analyst, at ext. 6790. All shredding arrangements must be made prior to the close of business Thursday, April 12. For special requests or for other questions, please contact Allen Snook, at ext. 6790.

Audrey Assad Concert – Parmer Hall, Saturday, April 14

Agape Center spring cleaning/chores fundraiser

While Mother Nature may have yet to receive the “memo” – spring is finally here! …And we all know that springtime means spring cleaning. The Agape Center’s international service trip team members are eager to partner with you to help you get your spring cleaning done! This year, we are again offering our annual spring cleaning/chores fundraiser the weekend of Friday, April 27 – Sunday, April 29. We ask that you consider enlisting the help of our student team members and, in return, provide a financial donation that will directly support our International service-learning teams traveling to Bolivia and Nicaragua this summer. We have a variety of timeslots available, beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 27 and concluding at 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 29. Students will be available to assist you with a variety of your spring-cleaning tasks (i.e., cleaning, painting, organizing, washing cars, etc.). Our students will even babysit to give you a night without the kids! Please see the attached FAQ sheet for more information on our upcoming service trips and fundraiser. Please keep in mind this is an entirely donation-based fundraiser; however, we’d like to recommend a donation of approximately $40 per student. School of the Humanities Summer Academic Camps

This summer, the School of the Humanities will hold three academic camps. FaithWorks@MessiahCollege, which is a unique summer experience connecting faith and service. This camp will be held on July 8 – 14 and is open to high school students. Their website is http://www.messiah.edu/info/22711/faithworks

The Young Filmmakers Workshop will be held on June 24 – 29. This camp will provide college-level filmmaking skills for students in rising grades 10-12. Students will leave with an understanding of how to be a writer, director, actor, cinematographer and editor. The Young Writers Workshop will be held July 8 – 12 and offers intensive courses in creative writing taught by published faculty and writers. We accept students in rising grades 9-12. To learn more about this workshop, visit the website at http://www.messiah.edu/writersworkshop

All three workshops offer scholarships, but there is a deadline to have your application in for the scholarship. Important parking information for commuters, P, P1 and Treona permits

On Thursday, April 19, Messiah College will be hosting Special Olympics for Service Day. This means that the entire Starry Complex is being used, including Treona Lot. The Department of Safety is requiring you to move your vehicles out of P lot and TR lot by Wednesday, April 18 before 6 p.m. There are no exceptions. You will be allowed to move your vehicle back into your assigned lot on Thursday, April 19 after 6 p.m. If you do not move your vehicle, we do reserve the right to have your vehicle towed at your expense. You may move your vehicles to the Pitt Parking Lot. You will not receive a ticket if you park in that lot. However, if you park in any other student lot (such as behind Mellinger or Fry residences) or employee parking lots (such as the Jordan/Kline lot) or in a visitor’s parking space or lot, you will be ticketed.
