Spend an evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas Friedman
Thomas Friedman speaks on “The Big Trends Shaping the World Today: Economics, Technology and Geopolitics” on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Parmer Hall. The bestselling author of “The World is Flat” and The New York Times foreign affairs columnist Tom Friedman is renowned for his direct reporting and sophisticated analysis of complex issues facing the world. According to Foreign Policy magazine, “Friedman doesn’t just report on events; he helps shape them.” Winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, he has covered the monumental stories from around the globe for The New York Times since 1981.
In his latest best-seller, “Thank You For Being Late: An Optimist’s Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations,” Friedman offers a blueprint for overcoming the stresses and challenges of a world being transformed by technology globalization, and climate change. Dog therapy day scheduled for Oct. 24
Minds Matter will be holding a dog therapy pet event on Oct. 24 as a part of De-Stress Fest. Inclusive Excellence Lecture by Mindy Smith
Please join us for an Inclusive Excellence Lecture presented by Melinda Smith. M.S. senior lecturer in applied health science and director of student wellness, Friday, Oct. 19 at 3:30 p.m. in Alexander Auditorium (Frey 110). Confidence, Choice and Connection: Moving into Meaningful Lifetime Activity for All Our past experiences, attitudes, and motivators drive our perspectives on holistic wellness and physical activity. However, stereotypes and unexamined assumptions pose obstacles for meaningful lifetime activity for all. In order to overcome this, Mindy Smith’s research with final-year student-athletes illuminates the importance of exploring each person’s story in the support of personal wellness. As we recognize practical adaptive strategies to progress past cookie-cutter prescriptions, we empower unique individuals to enjoy diverse opportunities that enhance physical and psychological health. This lecture is an outcome of collaboration between the Office of Diversity Affairs and the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science. The Inclusive Excellence Lectures provide Messiah educators and researchers an opportunity to disseminate research that broadens and advances our understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion across disciplinary boundaries. Grandparents Day 2018 – Thank you!
On behalf of the Office of Development, we offer our sincerest gratitude to all the students and employees for warmly welcoming over 500 grandparents to our Messiah College campus last week on Thursday, Oct. 4. We are deeply appreciative for the gracious hospitality show to our grandparent guests by the campus community in spite of challenges brought by such a large number of visitors. Grandparents Day is a great team effort and we are incredibly thankful for our colleagues in Conference Services, Dining Services, College Ministries, Public Safety, Admissions, Oakes Museum staff, Residence Life, the Advancement Division and Messiah Lifeways (shuttle service) for making this 10th annual event such a success. Also, thank you to our COE colleagues for accommodating some extra special “student” visitors in your classroom!
Announcing FalconLink – Messiah’s new portal
FalconLink is Messiah College’s new portal and is replacing MCSquare as the source for finding information and links to commonly used resources. FalconLink displays “cards” that represent documents, forms and resources commonly used at Messiah. Search for a topic (such as “Registration”) and click on the related card to get where you want to go. FalconLink provides the ability to search for what you need – simply “Find,” “Filter,” and “Favorite.” A brief tutorial that explains the basics of Find/Filter/Favorite can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cywVE2NTh2Q You can get to FalconLink here: https://falconlink.messiah.edu/ Every effort was made to include, as cards, the most frequently used links from MCSquare. A very big thank you to one and all who contributed to our Movie on the Green Event 2018! This year we were able to send a check to Mennonite Disaster Relief for a grand total of $1302.42! This generous donation was sent to assist with Hurricane Florence relief. In addition, we were so grateful to the Carlisle Sports Emporium for encouraging people to donate by offering a free mini golf ticket to every person who donated – a value of $9 per person. Thank you for attending and for giving.
