Congratulations to Dr. Robert Reyes, professor of human development and family science, for being elected to the Board of Directors of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). Congratulations also to Dr. Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, for being elected to the chair-elect position of the International Section of NCFR. NCFR is the premier professional association for understanding families through interdisciplinary research, theory and practice.

Professor of the History of Science Ted Davis will give a plenary address at a conference on “ADAM, THE FALL, & THE GOODNESS OF GOD,” later this month at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

Dr. Dottie Weigel, assistant professor and director of the Graduate Program in Higher Education, and Keyauna Moore, graduate assistant for academic advising, presented a conference session entitled, “Supporting International and Third-Culture Students’ First-Year Transition” at the Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed as baritone saxophonist with The Temptations and The Four Tops in concert in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on Feb. 23. The two legendary Motown groups have charted a total of 62 top 40 hit songs.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, concluded a series of forty single reed clinics at 27 elementary, middle and high schools in the mid-Atlantic area from August 2018 through February 2019. He gave clinics as part of the Vandoren Regional Artist outreach program, providing free instruction at public schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia on saxophone and clarinet pedagogy, approaches to practice and careers in music.

Deadline for submitting spring 2019 EMS events

Friday, March 15 is the deadline to submit your spring 2019 EMS event requests that include tech/audio needs, set up needs or require ticket sales. Requests that do not require these needs will still be accepted. Call room reservations (ext. 6009) with any questions.

Important dates: • Thursday, April 11 – Service Day, all events must be an evening event after 5 p.m. • Tuesday, April 16 – Service Day rain date • Wednesday, May 8 – Reading Day, no student events prior to 5 p.m. • Saturday, May 11 – Graduate Commencement, no events will be accepted this day • Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18 – Undergraduate Commencement, no events will be accepted during this timeframe

Summer student hiring reminder

This is a reminder that if your department plans to hire a student for a summer position, you must submit a summer hiring proposal through jobs.messiah.edu by April 4. All summer student employees must be requested for hire by submitting a summer hiring proposal through the jobs.messiah.edu system, even if the student currently works for your department, or has worked previously for your department. If you will be hiring a student that has not worked for your department previously, please remember that students that attended the Summer Job Fair must be given first priority to openings. Beyond the Blues: Signs, Symptoms and Support for Children and Teens Facing Depression

Join the Messiah College School of Graduate Studies and Geisinger Holy Spirit for the Partners in Caring Speaker Series on Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in the High Center, Parmer Hall. An engaging community conversation will include thoughtful insights about depression and how it impacts children and teens during critical periods of development. From biological factors to social stressors, peer and school pressures to family dynamics, youth are challenged to face difficult emotions, including depression. Learn about the signs, symptoms and influencers of depression and practical ways parents, teachers and community members can support our youth. Panelists include: Dr. Kevin Barnes, Dr. Stephen Kuniak, Dr. Charlene Lane, Dr. Deedre Michell and Ms. Amy Waugh.

Seeking host families

Harrisburg Academy (10 Erford Rd., Wormleysburg, PA) will host an exciting cultural immersion summer camp for Chinese students in middle school and we are seeking host families! The camp will take place July 20 to Aug. 3, with weekday activities on the Harrisburg Academy campus and chaperoned weekend day trips. Host families will receive a generous stipend to help offset the cost of hosting (meals, transportation, etc.); host families will pick up their student(s) at Harrisburg Academy on July 20 and will provide transportation to and from Harrisburg Academy from July 22 until their departure on Aug. 3. Host families will also provide breakfast and dinner daily for their student(s).
