Dr. Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, as a PA State FCS Action Committee member, participated in the FCS Education Northeast Region Summit in Arlington, Virginia, Sept. 15-16, as part of the National Partnership for recruiting, preparing, and supporting FCS education.

Dr. Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed a concert at Duke Divinity School (Duke University) on Sept. 7 with The New Caritas Orchestra under the baton of theologian/musician Jeremy Begbie. The orchestra was comprised of 37 Christian orchestral musicians from top orchestras and music schools from the U.S., including the Boston Symphony, Baltimore Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony. The concert, titled “Creation and New Creation” was presented in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts.

A two-time Grammy award nominee, Rod Gilfry most recently received a Grammy award nomination for his performance in the title role of Messiaen’s monumental opera “Saint François d’Assise” in Amsterdam. Best known for his work in opera, he also appears frequently in musical theater classics and is an acclaimed recitalist and concert artist. He has recently appeared at the Metropolitan Opera as Alberto Roc in the American premiere of Thomas Ades’s “The Exterminating Angel,” as well as Danilo in “The Merry Widow” opposite Susan Graham. Trekking to Tokyo- an employee wellness program
Tracking our daily steps (or step equivalents) often helps us get closer to our daily goal of 10,000 per day. We’re hoping this 10-week wellness program beginning on Sunday, Sept. 22 will do just that. The good news is that ANY activity counts, not just walking. An easy chart and recording form converts all types of aerobic activity to steps. Those who submit their previous week’s total (online) by Monday at midnight each week, and also average 40,000 steps per week will be eligible for free prize drawings at the end of the program. Banned Books Week at Murray Library

“Stop the Bleed” training offered
Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. When severe, uncontrolled bleeding occurs, every second counts. The Department of Homeland Security launched the “Stop the Bleed” campaign to raise public awareness and knowledge on how to prevent these deaths. In an effort to better prepare our campus community for any emergency, “Stop the Bleed” training will be offered on Thursday, Sept. 26 to all employees and all students. This training will be conducted by employees of the Geisinger Holy Spirit Education Center. All sessions will be held in Hostetter Chapel. Sessions are scheduled for 1:30-2:30, 2:45-3:45 and 4-5 p.m. Openings are being filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up for one of these training sessions, go to FalconLink. International Day of Peace
“The Arts of Peace,” a campus commemoration of the International Day of Peace, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m. in Legacy Park (the rain venue is the High Center Recital Hall). This year the annual event is organized by the Peace and Conflict Studies Program in partnership with the School of the Arts. Local, national and world peace will be promoted through prayer, music, spoken word and dance.
Susquehanna Valley FCU ATM new machine and new location
The Susquehanna Valley FCU ATM has been updated and has a new location on the 2nd floor of ECC. The new ATM is located in the lounge between Lottie Nelson Dining Hall and the Falcon Exchange. The SVFCU ATM participates on the CU$, Star, Visa, Plus, MasterCard (which includes Cirrus and Maestro), Accel and MoneyPass ATM networks.
Friends of Murray Library 2019 Annual Dinner & Meeting
Join us Friday Oct. 25 at 6p.m. in Martin Commons for the Friends of Murray Library Annual dinner and meeting. Kathy T. Hettinga will return to Messiah College to share her work and discuss the process of artist’s books. In her presentation, “Creating Artist’s Books from Object to Identity,” Hettinga will discuss the concepts behind her work and the projects she designed for her students. Drawing from her comprehensive background in drawing/illustration, book arts/typography, photography/scanning, collage and printmaking, Professor Hettinga led and pushed students to excellence in art and design, resulting in their work being published over a dozen times in international design journals. The Kathy T. Hettinga Student Artists’ Book Archive at Murray Library was created from the extensive student book art created under her direction. These works reveal the remarkable depths of meaning and beauty created by her students in response to Hettinga’s guidance and direction.

Online timesheets are coming!
The Web Time Entry (WTE) system has been used with the student employee’s for over a year with great success. Payroll has slowly been moving the staff employee’s to this system since early 2019. That means for some of you this is already something you use regularly. The time has come to move all areas to the new system. With WTE all hours are recorded, reviewed and approved online. This means no paper timesheets to print out, no signatures to get and no mailing it to payroll, plus it is accessible through your cell phone.
- Who is affected by this change?
All hourly staff that currently use paper timesheets AND those that approve their timesheets.
- What does this mean to you?
It means that all time reporting and approvals will be done through Self-Service.
- When will this happen?
All staff will start using this system with the Sept. 29-Oct. 12 pay period. You should be receiving an email with more details and instructions for you to print out.
- Where will I get instructions or have questions answered?
Printable instructions will be included in an email. In addition, there are currently 2 training sessions set for Parmer Cinema à Sept. 24 from 1-2 p.m. and Sept. 25 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. All staff are invited since there was no real training for the smaller groups that have already started this process.
