NEWS

The Digital Harrisburg Initiative and Center for Public Humanities are pleased to announce the publication of a special issue of Pennsylvania History titled “Harrisburg, Digital Public History, and the ‘City Beautiful’.” The issue takes a new look at Harrisburg’s City Beautiful movement in the early twentieth century in light of new data of the Digital Harrisburg Project, archival records from the Pennsylvania State Archives, and public humanities work in the city. The issue includes articles by four Messiah College educators—Jean Corey (director, Center for Public Humanities), Jim LaGrand (College Honors Program), Andrew Hermeling (former coordinator of Digital Harrisburg), and David Pettegrew (professor of History and Archaeology)—as well as four Messiah College students: Rachel Williams (History, 2019), Sarah Wilson Carter (History, 2019), Anna Strange (History, 2020), and Molly Elspas (History, 2021). The issue also features essays by local historians, geospatial technologists, journalists, artists, and community partners on topics such as: Harrisburg’s parks, churches, and synagogues; significant women’s reform groups; Greek, Jewish, and African American communities; the Spanish influenza outbreak of 1918; and the Commonwealth Monument Project, a new project to celebrate the city’s historic African American community.
