Jesse Kleingardner, assistant professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, in collaboration with computer science graduate, Hoang Nguyen, recently published a paper entitled “Identifying metal binding amino acids based on backbone geometries as a tool fo metalloprotein engineering.” The paper was published in Wiley’s “Protein Science” journal. Hoang is currently a graduate student in computer science at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The Dean of Science, Engineering, and Health is pleased to announce that Dr. Niklas Hellgren, associate professor of Physics, has agreed to serve as department chair of the department of computing, mathematics, and physics, effective May 17. Niklas has the unanimous support of his department faculty. The CMP department in 2021-22 will include 12 full-time faculty and the programs of actuarial science (BS), computer and information science (BS), cybersecurity (BS), digital media (BA), mathematics (BA), physics (BA, BS), and a minor in statistics.

Dr. Charlene Lane, LCSW and Joy Hammond, social work student in the graduating class of 2021, proposal entitled “COVID 19 & Anti-Asian sentiments” was accepted to the national Association of Christian Social-Workers annual conference scheduled for November 20, Glendale California.

On April 28, nineteen undergraduate pre-health students joined the virtual session ‘Lessons Learned along the Journey’ hosted by Martha Smith. Student guests heard from seniors Sara Stambaugh, Christine Milbrath and Laura Hudson and alumni Andrew Resh (currently attending The University of Maryland School of Dentistry) and Erin Wee (currently attending the accelerated RN/DNP program at Emory University) about tips for studying for medical school admissions tests, preparing a strong application for health professional schools, dealing with setbacks and having a well-rounded undergraduate experience.

On April 30, 2021, Dr. Brenda Elliott, assistant professor of Nursing and coordinator of MSN, CAGS, and RN to BSN programs was invited to present a virtual webinar to an interdisciplinary audience of healthcare professionals and students at Rutgers University Camden School of Nursing with two colleagues titled “A holistic approach to veteran health care in our communities.” The Distinguished Nursing Lecture was delivered on Behalf of the Veterans Serving Veterans Nursing Fellowship Program and was supported by the Health Resources Services Administration of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of a grant awarded to Rutgers University Camden School of Nursing. The objectives of the program were to explain contextual influences on the health and wellness of veterans and their families, identify Veterans Affairs and community resources to support veteran healthcare, and link current research and veteran health competencies to veteran-centered care.

For the second time in three years, Messiah University’s capstone marketing class, Marketing Management and Strategy, taught by professor of marketing David Hagenbuch, won first place in the annual Collegiate Marketing Plan Competition sponsored by the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA).

Other schools that often participate in the semester-long competition, which is judged by accomplished marketing professionals, include the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Robert Morris University, and West Virginia University. Messiah University’s marketing program is the only one to place in the top three each of the past four years.

Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement information for employees

Undergraduate Commencement: Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8

Schedule and details

Messiah University will be hosting Commencement celebrations for both the undergraduate Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 on May 8 at Shoemaker Field.

• The 2020 Commencement ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m.; the schedule and other details are available online at edu/2020UGcommencement.
• The 2021 Commencement ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.; the schedule and other details are available online at edu/UGcommencement
• It is important to note that both Commencement ceremonies are private, ticketed events this year due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols, but the above websites will provide a livestream of the ceremonies.

These websites will also provide a link to the live video stream of both Commencement ceremonies. Members of the Community of Educators should have already received information from the Provost’s Office regarding their participation in Commencement weekend. Faculty, staff and administrators who are participating in the Commencement ceremony itself should have already received an email memo regarding their role in the ceremony from the Office of Conference and Events Services. Note: everyone on campus during Commencement weekend are required to wear masks and to socially distance at all times.

Baccalaureate service/reception parking (Friday, May 7)

• Please be aware that traffic will be heavy on campus the evening of Friday, May 7, and that Department of Safety personnel will be directing guests to parking areas on campus. Guests will walk to Starry Athletic Complex for the service, which is being held outdoors this year on Shoemaker Field. It is important to note that Baccalaureate is a private, ticketed event. Important Employee parking information for Commencement day (Saturday, May 8).

• Members of the Community of Educatorsand other employees who are marching in the processional or participating in the Commencement ceremony will receive a reserved parking pass. Drivers MUST show their parking pass to traffic control personnel upon entering campus to be directed to their designated reserved parking areas.

 

• All other employeeswho will be working the Commencement ceremony will receive parking instructions with their assignment.
• All employees coming to campus that day should use the main campus entrance.
• Due to the significantly increased volume of traffic on campus for Commencement, the Department of Safety strongly encourages all employees to plan to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to their assigned work time, in order to alleviate being delayed in traffic, and to assist in being directed to their reserved parking areas on campus.
• It is also extremely important to follow all parking direction and instruction from safety personnel while entering and leaving campus, as traffic conditions can change quickly and officers are not able to stop traffic flow to have conversation with individual drivers.
• An important reminder—employees are notpermitted to schedule vendor visits, pick-ups or deliveries on the day of Commencement as it interferes with the increased and altered traffic flow on campus that day.

Annual Laptop Tune-ups

Congratulations on your accomplishment this past year! Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all navigated new ways of utilizing technology to fulfill the University’s mission.

Laptop tune-ups are available again starting in this year’s May Development Week! These tune-ups are available for Messiah-issued laptops only. To encourage physical distancing in our new location on the first floor of Old Main, Educational Technology Services’ (ETS’s) Help Desk will extend laptop tune-ups throughout the summer. If you have any issue that you have found yourself ‘living with’ all year that you would like to address, please do not hesitate to reach out to the ETS Help Desk so we can help!

Tune-ups could take at least 4 hours to complete, and are completed on a first come, first served basis.

CFA Collegiate Financial Plan Award

Congratulations to Ryan Althoff, a senior mathematics major/finance minor, for placing 1st in the CFA Society of Pittsburgh’s annual Collegiate Financial Plan competition. Ryan’s submission was chosen by 22 judges from a competitive field of over 200 financial plans submitted by students from colleges and universities across the state of Pennsylvania.
