Dr. Brenda Elliott, assistant professor and coordinator of MSN, CAGS, and RN-BSN programs, was invited to contribute a column in the September/October issue of MedSurg Matters! The column she co-authored, titled, “A multimodal approach to enhance nurses’ capacity to care for military veterans” is a synthesis of empirical evidence to facilitate nurses’ development of essential knowledge, skills and attitudes in caring for military and veteran populations. The article was selected for continuing education hours.

In order to obtain the most from the Slingshot Choice program as well as to prepare for the likelihood of continued supply chain disruption due to COVID-19, we are asking Messiah faculty (or designated admins) to submit their course material adoptions in a timely way through the Slingshot Pro Adopt tool (formerly Butler Central) available using your Messiah SSO. For your convenience, we have also added a card on FALCONlink that you can favorite.
Once spring adoptions have opened for your division, instructors will begin receiving notifications from Slingshot Pro Adopt system about adoption submission and reminders.

2021 Culture Connect: Transnational Branding, “the Girl Who Can,” and Postfeminist Edutainment
On Thursday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. in Boyer Hall’s Parmer Cinema, Dr. Nicoletta Marini-Maio (Dickinson College) and Dr. Ellen Nerenberg (Wesleyan University) will explore the production, aesthetics, narrative, reception and circulation of Winx Club (2004- ), a cartoon series and a multinational merchandising system ideated, developed and produced multinationally and multilingually by Rainbow Productions, Loreto, Italy. A reception in Howe Atrium will immediately follow the event.

Mendelssohn Piano Trio presents “Unity in Variety: Musical Path to Reconciliation”, High Foundation Recital Hall, Oct. 31, 4 p.m.
Felix Mendelssohn considered unity in variety the essence of the beautiful. Through masterpieces by Brahms and Ravel, Mendelssohn Piano Trio explores this idea and its broader implications for reconciliation in our increasingly fractured society. Mendelssohn Piano Trio explores both meanings of the word “reconciliation:” restoration of peaceful and friendly relationships, as well as making things compatible with each other.
The program includes Brahms Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major and Ravel Piano Trio. Brahms wrote his Sonata Op. 100 as a reconciliation gift to his friend, violinist Joseph Joachim and his wife, after their contentious separation which even involved a legal battle in which Brahms testified on wife’s behalf. The Ravel Piano Trio, written on the eve of World War I, is a perfect example of great artist’s ability to reconcile seemingly incompatible cultural influences such as French baroque forms, jazz harmonies and Javanese dance rhythms.

“Mocktails” will be held Nov. 16
The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, in collaboration with the Career and Professional Development Center, announces our annual evening of professional development for students. “Mocktails” as this event is now known, features networking education for students, followed by a networking reception with local alumni and employers. This reception gives students a safe space to directly apply and practice their networking skills with alumni, employers, and friends of the college.
Mocktails will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Admissions and Welcome Center.
Please note that we will be following several Covid protocols for Mocktails. Out of an abundance of precaution, we are asking that all attendees wear masks at this event. Food and drink will be provided at locations separate from the main networking area so that all interpersonal interactions can occur while participants are masked.

In a time when wars, disasters and conflict dominate our daily news feed, what in the world would landscapes and gardens have to offer a broken world? Gardens invite us to attend to the moment, to temporalize space and to “come to our senses.” In a world of mediated experiences, gardens remain stubbornly rooted in time and help us to embody the meaning of hope.
Emily Maeda grew up outside of Boulder on her parent’s farm where she learned to love the beauty of Colorado’s natural environment. She pursued her education in piano performance at both the University of Colorado and Arizona State University, where she also took classes in landscape design. Currently, she serves as vice president of Tree of Life Landscapes, which emphasizes the use of native plants and the design principles of order, unity, and rhythm.
