Messiah Human Library Project – Where Humans Become Open Books

The Human Library Project is where Messiah students, faculty and staff become open books, sharing their personal stories with readers. The Human Library™ is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers.
Please save the date of March 30 in the afternoon, as well as the evening at 7 p.m. to hear our featured book, Mr. T.M. Garret.
Before he started engaging in civil rights work, TM Garret was a White Supremacist in leading roles in Europe and the USA. Leaving behind an ideology of hate, he now shares his compelling testimony of the journey into and out of the hate movement and the hope for building a more beloved community.
The title of his “human library talk” is “Erasing the Hate: From Neo-Nazi to Peace Activist.”

The nationally acclaimed Susquehanna Chorale, conducted by Messiah’s Professor Emeritus, Linda Tedford, will present its annual Candlelight Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 17, as they commemorate their 40th Anniversary concert season.
The sacred mystery of the season is honored with Gustav Holst’s Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Egil Hovland’s The Glory of the Father, and Matthew Culloton’s In Dulci Jubilo. We proudly feature Dan Forrest’s new work commissioned for the Chorale’s 40th Anniversary, Let the Stable Still Astonish, along with his See Amid the Winter’s Snow, The First Noel, and Good Christian Men Rejoice. Holiday cheer abounds with Mack Wilberg’s Christmas is Coming and Gordon Langford’s Jingle Bells.
This year’s Candlelight Christmas brings back the traditions of glorious music and audience sing-alongs of familiar carols which were absent from our lives last year. You will hear favorites from past concerts – The Work of Christmas, This Christmastide, and the spirituals Rise Up Shepherd and Follow and Go Where I Send Thee – all of which have been included on our new 40th Anniversary double CD, Legacy. The evening concludes with the Chorale’s traditional finale, Silent Night, sung in the round by candlelight. A pre-concert prelude by Dan Dorty, organ, will be presented 15 minutes before the performance.

“Portraits of White” presented by Frances Drost
The region’s premier holiday concert experience is once again live, as singer-songwriter Frances Drost presents the eighth annual performance of her popular signature performance at Messiah University. Drost, accompanied by professional instrumentalists and vocalists in an eight-piece ensemble, will offer two shows at Parmer Hall on the Grantham, Pa., campus, Friday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 12, at 3 p.m.
The much-anticipated annual concert grew out of Drost’s Portraits of White CD of original compositions expressing the range of emotions associated with her experience of Christmas—from her love of snow to her struggles with loss. “It is a personal Christmas/winter journey,” Drost says, “from the time I was a little girl right up through my recent years of songwriting. Just like the CD, it is predominantly my music, along with some well-loved and recognizable Christmas selections.”
