Biological Sciences alumna Molly Bletz was interviewed by and quoted in a recent story published by Katherine J. Wu for The Atlantic. “We’re Giving Up on the (Frog) Pandemic” describes work by scientists around the world to stave off a fungal pathogen that has decimated amphibian species everywhere. Bletz has worked on this disease since her first publication with Erik Lindquist in 2011. She is the David H. Smith Conservation Fellow, University of Massachusetts Boston, specializing as a disease ecologist and conservation biologist. 2022 Annual American Democracy Lecture with Michael Dobbs

Please join us on Thursday, Nov. 10, in Parmer Hall, at 7 p.m. for the 2022 American Democracy Lecture with best-selling author Michael Dobbs. As a foreign correspondent for the Washington Post, Dobbs had a front row seat to the collapse of Communism, covering landmark events such as the breakup of the Soviet Union, the rise of Solidarity in Poland, and the Tiananmen protests in China.

Dobbs has written six books on the Cold War and World War II, including the widely acclaimed One Minute to Midnight: Kennedy, Khrushchev and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War, on the Cuban missile crisis. His latest book, King Richard, Nixon and Watergate: An American Tragedy, was named New York Times critics’ “Top Book of 2021.”

Steel Magnolias is set over the span of 3 years and tells the story of a group of friends, neighbors, and clients of hairstylist, Truvy Jones. The beginning of the play focuses on young Shelby who is preparing for her upcoming wedding. As Shelby’s story progresses, we learn about her struggles with Type 1 diabetes, and her mother’s concern about her leaving the nest and starting a family of her own. Although the ladies argue and tease each other, their friendship and sense of community holds them together. We see this at various points of crisis during the play and, ultimately, at the end when Shelby decision to go against her doctor’s orders and have a child has dire consequences.

Estimated run time: 2 hours and 20 minutes. There will be one 15 minute intermission.

Mocktails” will be held Nov. 15

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, in collaboration with the Career and Professional Development Center, announces our annual evening of professional development for students. “Mocktails” as this event is known, features networking education for students, followed by a networking reception with local alumni and employers. This reception gives students a safe space to directly apply and practice their networking skills with alumni, employers, and friends of the university.

Mocktails will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 6 – 8:30 p.m. in the Oakes Museum of Natural History.

Interested alumni and employers can REGISTER HERE by Tuesday, Nov. 8. Educators are also welcome and encouraged to attend and can register via this link.

Susquehanna Chorale Youth Choral Festival, Nov. 20

The critically-acclaimed Susquehanna Chorale and three of its educational choirs will present the Chorale’s annual Youth Choral Festival on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 4 p.m. at the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. The public is invited to attend.

This inspiring intergenerational event, which inaugurates the Susquehanna Chorale’s 41st season, features the Susquehanna Chorale, the Children’s Chorale, the Susquehanna Youth Chorale, and the Susquehanna Young Women’s Chorale. The concert will include selections from the traditional choral repertoire, spirituals, and folk songs from around the world. The “family” of choirs will come together to perform the program finale, Mack Wilberg’s Anthem of Peace, conducted by Artistic Director, Founder, and Conductor Linda L. Tedford.

‘Moving with the Seasons, Never Fixed in Stone’: Native American Identity in the 21st Century” – lecture by Dr. R. David Edmunds

This lecture by Dr. R. David Edmunds, professor of history at the University of Texas in Dallas, is hosted by the Honors Program and will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall.

“Songs of Japonisme” surveys the musical influence of the Japonisme movement in the art song repertoire of the early 20th century, with works by both Japanese and Western composers in Japanese, English, French, German and Czech. This performance will feature a collection of art songs linked by music and poetry from an era prior to World War II, a time of mutual admiration between Japan and the Western world.

Site team trips allow for students to steward their God-given gifts and knowledge to serve others both locally and internationally. Through this experience, the students develop professionally and socially through teamwork and grow in cultural awareness and the realization of how service to others is a product of their Christian identity.

On Sunday, Nov. 13, students from the Collaboratory will be running in the Harrisburg marathon to bring awareness and financial support to students traveling on Collaboratory Site Team trips in 2023.
✔️100% of the proceeds will be distributed among all students traveling with a Collab project team in 2023.
✔️A MATCHING CHALLENGE has been established that will DOUBLE every dollar given up to $10,000.
✔️Our goal is to raise $1,000 for every mile of the marathon = $26,200
