ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Thirteen members of the Department of Biological Sciences attended the 98th Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science that was held on the weekend of March 17 – 19 at Gannon University in Erie, PA. Nine students and one faculty member presented results from ongoing research studies. Sean Lapp, mentored and accompanied by John Harms, presented a poster describing analysis of metastasis by pancreatic cancer. Kelly Barr and Abigail Morgan, mentored and accompanied by Jennifer Ness-Myers, presented separate posters that, respectively, described how development of the central nervous system is altered by limiting oxygen availability, and an analysis of gene expression in cultured neural cells. Sarah Bath, mentored and accompanied by Larry Mylin and John Harms, described results of a successful cancer vaccination study. Wei-Jin (Michael) Lin, mentored and accompanied by Larry Mylin, described progress in efforts to develop T4 virus-specific monoclonal antibodies for use in Microbiology course laboratories in a talk. Joel Hart presented a poster describing work conducted with collaborator Abigail Casey to isolate natural antibiotics from plants that was mentored by David Foster and Richard Schaeffer. Tyler Jahraus (also mentored by David Foster) gave a talk in which he described efforts to propagate Virginia bluebells using plant tissue culture techniques. David Foster chaired a session in which he also gave a talk describing how his novel aquaponics system that uses earthworms for biodigestion of animal waste can be employed for education and research. Evan Jerome, mentored by Erik Lindquist and Michael Shin, described efforts to use molecular diagnostic tools to detect a pathogenic fungus among local populations of salamanders in a poster presentation. Katelyn Boyce presented a poster describing ongoing studies conducted under the guidance of Janet Matanguihan that seek to develop better and disease-resistant varieties of flax. All presentations were received with enthusiasm and generated multiple follow-up questions. Angela Hare, dean of the School of Science, Engineering and Health, was introduced to the PAS organization and enjoyed learning from the Messiah group and others while attending a variety of presentations and meetings throughout the weekend. Messiah University will host the 99th Annual Meeting of the PAS on April 12–14, 2024.

Maundy Thursday Prayer Vigil
We are holding a 12 hour prayer vigil from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6. We hope to have three people praying for each 15 minute interval. You can pray at a location of your own choosing. Closer to the vigil date, specific intercessory concerns will be sent. Of course, you will have your own concerns for others/situations on and off campus. Babysitter’s available for service trip fundraiser

2023 fire extinguisher training
According to recent data released by the US Fire Administration for 2008-2017, the US had an annual average of 1,344,100 fires, resulting in 3,190 civilian deaths, 16,225 civilian injuries, and $14.7 billion in direct property loss each year. Don’t become part of these statistics. Fire extinguisher training will be offered on campus Monday, April 10 through Wednesday, April 12. Multiple sessions will be offered during these days. All training sessions will be held at the Kim S. Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center, Room 310, Trustees Boardroom, and will include hands-on use of the Bullex© Simulation System. This allows you to experience the “feel” of a real extinguisher without any adverse impact on the environment. Class size is limited to 25 so you must register. To do so, go to FalconLink, then All Training Classes. Click on “Fire Extinguisher Training” under Click Here to See Available Courses. Click on the pencil icon in front of the session you wish to attend and follow the instructions to register.
Department of Safety and Emergency Support
The Dispatch Office—situated on the first floor of Eisenhower Campus Center and available by phone at (717) 691-6005—exists to serve the Grantham campus community during emergency incidents. Persons witnessing criminal activity, medical emergencies, and other matters of significant concern, should immediately notify the Dispatch Office. Those calling Dispatch should be prepared to provide known details about the situation. Safety Officers will be sent to assume control of the incident. It is important to note the dispatchers are not trained to give medical advice.
Regarding medical calls – some, but not all, Safety officers are certified EMTs. If the officer is an EMT, their role will be to provide medical care. If the officer is not an EMT, their role will be to determine who to bring into the situation for a higher level of care. There are also Messiah students who possess EMT credentials, and they can be dispatched as needed to the scene. They are qualified to assume care of the patient. In those cases, the student will tell the patient and others in the immediate area that they are EMT certified.
If a member of the Messiah community calls an ambulance, they should immediately notify the Dispatch Office thereafter that such has been done. Those calling 911 should be prepared to be answer multiple questions. Please understand that 911 dispatchers are required to ask a list of standard questions. It is OK if the caller does not know all the answers, and OK to tell the 911 dispatcher that they don’t have that information. Whenever the Safety Department is advised that an ambulance has been called, they will meet the ambulance at the main campus entrance and escort it to the scene.
*Note: Emergencies at the Winding Hill location are handled by the local police and emergency services. Messiah University Department of Safety does not provide services at this site.

The workflow for a standard requisition is:
o Enter a requisition (request for payment)
o Budget manager approves the purchase
o Funds are encumbered (funds on “hold” for this purchase)
o Purchase order is sent to supplier
o Receive items in One$ource after you physically receive the items and only for the actual number you received (count them to be sure)
o Invoice is matched to the purchase order in One$ource and paid according to terms

2023 fall semester – faculty work submission deadlines
Note to faculty: please read
Due to the new Campus Store vendor’s textbook subscription service, Slingshot Choice, the due dates for faculty submissions of copyright and non-copyrighted material have been adjusted. With enrollment in this new service, the Campus Store aims to deliver a student’s required course materials, including course packets and lab manuals, to the student’s room a week before the semester starts.
As a result, the Campus Store needs these materials to be received into their inventory sooner than in the past.
In addition, copyright permissions are requiring a longer turnaround time to process requests.

The mission organization Burkina Faso Outreach, a former Collaboratory partner, is looking for magazines that have images of people, places that show God’s creation – trees, animals, flowers, etc. Nature magazines, National Geographic, children’s issues, etc. These will be used for various projects in Christian primary schools in local villages in this West African country.
