Kim Fenstermacher, assistant dean of nursing delivered the opening keynote address for the UPMC Nursing Research and Evidence-based Practice Conference on September 15 in Harrisburg. Her presentation, titled “Empowering Nurses with Evidence to Learn from the Past and Lead for the Future” urged nurses to think creatively about how to solve the nursing workforce shortages that are impacting nursing practice and nursing education.

Lin Taylor is retiring from Messiah University at the end of September. Lin has played many parts in her 18 years at Messiah University: professor, employee and friend. Beginning in 2005, she taught math and computer sciences as an adjunct professor. Beginning in 2013, Lin joined ITS as a full-time programmer/analyst. In 2021, her hard work was recognized when she received the Pride in Performance award. Lin has served on various committees on campus and volunteers with Girls Who Code.

He also has international experience working on race, peace and poverty-related issues in Africa, Canada, Haiti, Israel and Norway, and is called upon frequently by media outlets to provide commentary on race relations and potential solutions. Lassiter is a member of the US Presidential Advisory Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Black Americans and currently serves as the executive director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. Sphinx Virtuosi: Generations

The Sphinx Virtuosi is a dynamic and inspiring professional self-conducted chamber orchestra that serves as the flagship performing entity of the Sphinx Organization–the leading social justice nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Comprised of 18 accomplished Black and Latinx artists, a critical aim of the Sphinx Virtuosi is to evolve and transform the face of classical music through artistic excellence, pioneering programming and impassioned community engagement. Its members serve as cultural and diversity ambassadors for audiences and communities around the United States during national tours.

Inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes and Julia Alvarez, this evening’s program will showcase the beauty and tradition of excellence inherent in classical music created and performed by Black and Latinx composers for many generations. Together, the Sphinx Virtuosi seek to uplift spirits through sharing the sounds that inspire us and transcend the boundaries of time, history and struggle.

The Bridge Center for Continuing Education

The Bridge Center for Continuing Education at Messiah University in partnership with the Southcentral Long-Term Care-RISE Team at Penn State Health is coordinating training for entry and mid-level Long-Term Care Leaders. The training focuses on Leading Spirituality and Wellness in Long-Term Care and consists of 8 online non-credit bearing educational courses. Each course will focus on a unique aspect of spirituality and will encourage Long-term care leaders in their personal journeys as well as provide tools to support their co-workers and team members. Courses can be completed as standalone events, or participants can earn a Certificate of Completion if they complete the 4 Core Courses and 2 Elective Courses. This is a grant-funded initiative and it is free for employees of long-term care and assisted living facilities in the following counties: Adams, Blair, Bedford, Franklin, Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, Cumberland, Lebanon, Dauphin, Fulton and York. “Who Will Carry the Word?” is a deeply moving recount of French writer Charlotte Delbo’s survival during the Holocaust. The play depicts the atrocities during this unfathomable time in history, painting an emotionally raw picture of enduring the unimaginable. While “Who Will Carry the Word?” is based on existence in concentration camps, it also portrays how in times of despair, mankind comes together—bonded by strength and courage—to find hope and the will to escape a dire fate.

Society of Women Engineers National Mission Award

Messiah’s SWE chapter has been chosen to receive the Society of Women Engineers Mission Award. The national organization honored SWE for their deliberate and passionate promotion of women in engineering by creating spaces of belonging, introducing professional development opportunities, and striving to share their faith in the context of vocation. HPIR career night

Join us as the History, Politics and International Relations (HPIR) department welcomes back two of our own for HPIR Career Night, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023, Boyer Hall 336, 6:30 p.m. History major Wayne Kantz ’03 currently teaches college prep and advanced placement U.S. History courses at a Lancaster high school. He also works as a HPIR adjunct instructor at Messiah.
