I’m excited to announce that Sarah Wade will be joining the enrollment management (EM) division in this role beginning Feb. 20. Sarah is a 1999 graduate of Messiah. She has worked in admissions and EM in several roles over the years, most recently as the associate vice president for EM. In addition to her time at Messiah, Sarah served on the enrollment teams at Kutztown and CU Boulder, and as vice president for education at VEMO. She is an experienced enrollment leader and looks forward to serving the grad enrollment team in this role!

Dottie Weigel, associate professor of Higher Education, and James Winfield, adjunct professor, presented a preconference session at the Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience in Los Angeles, California. The session, “Engagement Strategies to Address Student Disconnection in the First Year of College” offered ways to address engagement in a variety of first-year contexts, with a special focus on first-generation students.

On Feb. 11, a Messiah team from the Department of Computing, Mathematics and Physics scored 12 out of 30 teams in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (MACCDC) Virtual Qualifying Round. This was the first year for Messiah to participate in the competition, led by assistant professor of cybersecurity education David Bibighaus. Student captain Ray Truex led the team roster of Luke Anderson, Justin Ayres, Chris Copeland, Ryan Donat, Delainey Gray, Aidan Hubly, Brandon Snook, Michael Stefanchik, Grace Taylor, Shane Wahlberg, and Xavier Zepiora. The team had the 6-hour task of securing and defending a fictitious company’s network while ensuring smooth business operations, after a security breach and IT restructure. The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the eldest, never left Hazlehurst — she is the caretaker of the sisters’ cantankerous Old Granddaddy. Meg, the middle sister, left home to pursue stardom as a singer in Los Angeles, but has, so far, only found happiness at the bottom of a bottle. And Babe, the youngest, has just been arrested for shooting her abusive husband, Zackery Botrelle. Their troubles, grave and yet somehow hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail. Under the scorching heat of the Mississippi sun, past resentments bubble to the surface and each sister must come to terms with the consequences of her own “crimes of the heart.”

Employee parking reminders from the Department of Safety

All employees must register their vehicle(s) with The Department of Safety and park in their assigned lot. Employees should have a current blue parking permit hangtag.

Employees are to park in their respective assigned lot location, Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., while classes are in session.

Please take time to review the University “campus parking map” and the “employee traffic code” at the Department of Safety website by clicking the quick link “vehicle parking information”. You are responsible for abiding by the parking and traffic regulations.

When on Messiah University property, your permit must be visible from the outside of the vehicle. Please place your assigned parking permit hangtag on your rear-view mirror while parked for maximum visibility and to avoid receipt of a citation.

Mendelssohn Piano Trio, Guest Artists and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet “Migration and Inspiration”

While migration of people inevitably changes culture for generations, it also leads to migration of ideas and forms across genres in arts. Mendelssohn Piano Trio; Michael Stepniak, dean of Shenandoah Conservatory; and Devin Howell, principal bass of the Harrisburg Symphony, will be joined by Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet dancers in exploring mutual influences among Eastern European, German, French and American cultures through music by Franz Schubert and Josef Suk, as well as choreography by Alan Hineline. English department faculty members Christine Perrin, Matthew Roth and Samuel Smith will also perform original poetry as part of this cross-disciplinary program.
