The Department of Nursing congratulates Dr. Wanda Thuma-McDermond for receiving the Ripple Effect Raindrop Award during the 40th Anniversary of Nursing brunch on Homecoming weekend. This award was presented to Wanda in celebration and recognition of her outstanding contributions to initiating and maintaining the nursing student clinical experience option at Macha Mission Hospital in Macha, Zambia. Wanda has connected hundreds of students’ hearts to the clay dirt hills of Macha, many of whom now serve as missionary nurses, furthering their studies in public and global health, and dedicating their lives to service because of her example. This award is named for the ripple effect: how a single action can create waves, and a series of actions create bigger waves that reach far beyond what we can imagine. A single raindrop brings life, renewal, and possibility to areas of drought. This description perfectly mirrors the work of Dr. Wanda Thuma-McDermond, who embodies the scripture of Deuteronomy 28:12: “The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.” Wanda’s vision (a raindrop) has grown into an outstanding opportunity for students and the people of Macha since 2007 (the ripples). Wanda’s dedication, vision, servant leadership, and countless hours of hard work behind the scenes made her dream become the dream of so many others. Congratulations, Wanda!

Friends of Murray Library annual dinner and program
You may know that the Murray Library serves as an important resource to help prepare our community for lives of service, leadership, and reconciliation in church and society. However, you may not know that Friends of Murray Library supports this work each year by hosting an Annual Dinner where we recognize important student research and hear from literacy champions. This year we are featuring library experts and informed practitioners championing literacy in different contexts like higher education, public community libraries, and in K-12 public schools.
You’re invited to join us on Friday, Nov. 8 from 6-8:30 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel for our 22nd Annual Dinner, catered by Two Bridges Catering, and Public Program. We are delighted to welcome a moderated plenary panel of literacy experts who will explore the theme of “Transitions in Literacy” – specifically what it means to be literate today, the future of literacy, and the ways libraries can come together with our communities to develop literacy skills for people of all ages.
Our moderator will be Sarah Fischer, Messiah University associate professor of literacy education. The panelists for the evening include Ryan McCrory, executive director of the Dauphin County Library System; Janet Vogel, director of the Murray Library at Messiah University; and Sarah George, library department coordinator at Mechanicsburg School District and librarian at three of the district’s elementary buildings.
We also hope you will join us in presenting President Kim Phipps with an honorary lifetime membership. As you may know, President Phipps has been a champion of Murray Library over her 27 years at Messiah and will be retiring following the end of the 2024-2025 academic year. In addition to recognizing President Phipps, our library student research grant awardee, Michael Azar, will present his research. Michael will graduate in 2025 with a B.S. in biology (biomedical concentration) and B.A. in music (keyboard composition).
Pricing: $30 Friends members / $45 Guests
Students: $15 for dinner + presentation (arrive 6 p.m.)
OR no charge to attend the program only (arrive 7:15 p.m.)
*Reservation deadline is Friday, Oct. 25.
