Nov. 7

Thursday, November 7th, 2024

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Opportunity to support Messiah’s grad students

Messiah’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies is once again holding our collection to help our graduate students perform to the best of their ability during the week of final exams. Our goal is to fill 180 bags with study break friendly items for the on-campus graduate students and select online graduate students who live locally. We will also provide a note of prayer and encouragement to each recipient.

Donations are being collected at Winding Hill and on main campus through Monday, Dec. 2. If you are able to contribute, please visit our sign-up link for details. Reach out to Lyndsay Grimm (lgrimm@messiah.edu) with any questions. Thank you in advance!

Special issue of Family Science Review Published

The special issue of Family Science Review journal devoted to Family Science Careers Through the Eyes of Theory, guest edited by Raeann Hamon, was just published. While family science programs generally prepare students well to understand the role of theory in the research process—shaping the questions we ask and how we design our studies, etc.–,
we are sometimes less intentional in helping students to imagine how theories influence our professional practice in family science careers. Thus, for this special issue, authors
incorporated scholarly literature in writing about a career path in family science and selected and described the family theories that most influence the way they approach their work and perform their professional duties. Finally, authors illustrated how these chosen theories afford a useful lens for practice via case studies or specific work scenarios. The authors concluded their papers by outlining strengths and weaknesses of these theoretical lenses in their unique professional contexts. In addition to editing the collection of ten papers, Hamon had her own article entitled The Role of Department Chair through the Lenses of Family Systems Theory and Family Strengths Perspective. Erin Boyd-Soisson contributed Approaching Academic Advising of Undergraduate Students in HDFS Through the Lenses of Identity Development Theories. Finally, Annie Insley and Erika Sheaffer, both Messiah University HDFS graduates who are Certified Child Life Specialists, contributed Child Life Through the Lens of Family Stress Theory and Family Systems Theory. The special issue is now available at https://www.familyscienceassociation.org/2024-volume-28-issue-2-special/

U.S. Navy Band Commodores in Concert

Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m.
Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts, Parmer Hall

Jazz is America’s music and the U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy’s premier jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for 50 years. Formed in 1969, this 18-member group continues the jazz big band legacy with some of the finest musicians in the world. The Commodores’ mission includes public concerts, national concert tours, ceremonial support in honoring our veterans, jazz education classes and clinics, and protocol performances for high-level military and civilian government officials.

The Commodores are held nationwide by concert patrons and critics alike. The list of guest artists that have appeared with the Commodores reads like a who’s who of jazz and popular music: Ray Charles, Branford Marsalis, Clark Terry, Grover Washington Jr., Chris Potter, Jerry Bergonzi, Eddie Daniels, James Moody and many more. They have appeared on television shows, played nearly all major jazz festivals and toured across the United States and abroad. In conjunction with the Airmen of Note (Air Force) and the Army Blues (Army), the Commodores even host their own annual jazz festival, the Joint Service Jazz Festival in Washington, D.C. As a versatile and relevant musical organization in the 21st century, the Commodores write and arrange much of their vast library of music. Their concerts are an eclectic mix of traditional big band music, exciting jazz vocal arrangements and fresh new instrumental music written specifically for the Commodores of today. This vibrant, dynamic musical group is constantly striving for musical excellence and the pursuit of new and exciting ways to communicate with their audiences.
