Better the poor whose walk is blameless

than the rich whose ways are perverse

AROUND CAMPUS

Save the Date: Community Day slated for Aug. 19
All employees are warmly invited to attend Community Day on Tuesday, Aug. 19 from 9 -10:15 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees features a retrospective video, special music, corporate worship and prayer and remarks from Interim President Dr. Jon Stuckey. Light refreshments and new long-sleeved Messiah shirts will be available immediately following the event in front of the High Center. All offices and departments (with the exception of Dispatch) will close from 8:45-11 a.m. to allow employees to enjoy the Community Day experience. If you have any questions, please contact Karin Bisbee, executive coordinator for the president’s office and board of trustees, at kbisbee@messiah.edu. Please remember that no food or drink is permitted in the venue with the exception of bottled water.

Wellness and compliance information for the school year
The University is required by law to communicate certain compliance and safety information to the campus community on an annual basis. A link to the booklet that contains this information and reminders of employee responsibilities is available on FalconLink (search for Wellness and Compliance Information for the School Year). Over the next few weeks, please read this document in its entirety and retain it as a resource and reference. If you have any questions or would like a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Human Resources at humanres@messiah.edu or ext. 5300.

New enrollment staff

We are delighted to introduce several new colleagues who have recently become part of our Enrollment Management team. Please join us in giving them a warm Messiah welcome! Jessica Houtz is joining undergraduate admissions as our seasonal traveling recruiter. A graduate of Shippensburg University with a degree in education, Jessica brings valuable experience from a variety of teaching roles, including most recently at Hanover Public Schools and as a literacy specialist teaching English online. She is excited to step into the world of higher education and bring her passion for students and learning to this new role. Jessica’s first day on campus is Aug. 4, and after several weeks of planning and preparation, she will hit the road throughout September and October, representing Messiah at college fairs and high school visits. We are thrilled to have her energy and enthusiasm on the team!

The Financial Aid Office is also celebrating the addition of two new team members dedicated to supporting our students and families: Victoria Williamson joined the team in June as a part-time financial aid assistant. She brings over a decade of administrative experience as an office manager and holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Lycoming College. Victoria will typically work from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving as the first point of contact for financial aid inquiries and assisting with processing private scholarship checks and supervising our amazing student workers. We are so grateful for the care and professionalism she brings to this important role.

Jeremy Lippert ’01 has made a meaningful transition from campus safety to financial aid, stepping into the role of financial aid counselor following the completion of his MBA from Messiah. With a background in education and a heart for service, Jeremy is well-prepared to guide students and families through the financial aid process and collaborate with campus partners to ensure a smooth path to enrollment for each student.

Launch of NEXT Steps

On Aug. 22, the inaugural five NEXT Steps students will move in and begin their journey here at Messiah. The NEXT Steps team would like to take a moment to recognize and honor everyone who has contributed to the development of this program from day one. We are deeply grateful for your dedication to championing inclusive education and for the effort you have put into making this program a reality. Your collective work has enriched the lives of these five students and will continue to positively impact all future Falcons. By embracing inclusion as part of who we are and who we strive to be, we demonstrate that, together, we can always find a way to make meaningful opportunities possible.

Important campus policy:

Due to Pennsylvania state regulations prohibiting the operation of certain motorized vehicles on public roadways and for safety reasons, Messiah University will no longer permit the use of personal electric or gas-powered mini vehicles on campus. This includes items such as electric scooters, hoverboards and similar devices. This applies to employees, students and guests.

Personal electric or gas operated mini vehicles (scooters, hoverboards, etc.)
Personal electric vehicles, such as scooters, hoverboards and electric skateboards, are prohibited from being operated, stored, parked or charged on campus. The same is true for gas-operated mini-vehicles (e.g., mini-bikes, scooters, etc.) These types of vehicles are prohibited from being used on campus, including all grounds, sidewalks, roadways and athletic facilities. They are also prohibited from being stored within an automobile on campus. Electric bicycles ARE permitted on campus roadways but not on pathways and sidewalks, provided users follow all traffic regulations (see Department of Safety Traffic Code and Parking Policy). Electric bicycles are not permitted to be charged on campus. Electric bicycles are not permitted in any building on campus. As a reminder, all bikes (electronic and pedal) need to be registered with the Department of Safety. For students, any unapproved PEVs or gas-operated mini-vehicles found on campus will be confiscated by safety. Safety will confiscate any electric bicycles found within any university building. All confiscated PEVs or gas-operated mini-vehicles must be collected by the owner and removed from campus at the end of the semester.
