Best in Track Paper Award
Professor of Marketing David Hagenbuch recently presented a paper, “How Mere Exposure to Ethical Issues Increases Marketers’ Moral Dissonance,” at the American Marketing Association’s Summer Academic Conference in Chicago. The paper was based on research he conducted with Dorene Ciletti of Point Park University and RJ Thompson of the University of Pittsburgh. Their study included one of the most comprehensive surveys ever of ethical issues in marketing. Over 300 respondents, all AMA members, indicated the extent to which they believed 93 unique statements represented moral issues for the field. Moreover, pretest – posttest components found that just being exposed to the issues led to a significant change in marketers’ desires for their discipline to better address the ethical concerns. The paper was awarded Best in Track Paper – Ethics, Privacy, and Cross-Industry Collaborations.

“1925 and All That: Fundamentalists, Modernists, and the Scopes Trial on the Occasion of its 100th Anniversary”
Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Frey 110 In the spring of 1925, rookie teacher John Scopes agreed to stand trial for teaching evolution in a Tennessee high school, to test the constitutionality of the new law. Using powerful cartoon images and popular religious pamphlets from the period, Dr. Davis’ talk shows why teaching evolution was so controversial among traditional Christians, describes how liberal Protestants responded to science, and introduces some alternative perspectives from prominent Christian voices today. Dr. Edward (Ted) Davis has written many books and articles about Christianity and science in the Scientific Revolution and modern America, most recently: Protestant Modernist Pamphlets: Science and Religion in the Scopes Era (Johns Hopkins, 2024). He was an advisor for exhibits at the National Museum of American History and the Museum of the Bible. Sponsored by the Honors Program.
A Year of Focus on Unreasonable Hospitality
This year, the Division of Operations has embraced Unreasonable Hospitality as our guiding theme. To learn more about the inspiration behind this idea, we invite you to watch Will Guidara’s TED Talk The Secret Ingredients of Great Hospitality | Will Guidara | TED.
At its core, this theme reflects our commitment to ensuring every person feels seen, heard, valued and—whenever possible—enjoys a memorable experience. Each department within the division has developed specific goals to help bring this vision to life.
Recently, Dwayne Magee, director of print and mail services, shared his perspective in a blog post for IPMA, an organization in which he is an active leader. You can read his piece here: In-Plant Success: Leading with Hospitality By Dwayne Magee.
In the weeks and months ahead, division directors will be sharing examples of how their teams are embodying Unreasonable Hospitality in their daily work. Our hope is that every student, employee and guest who interacts with Messiah University experiences the genuine care of our community. While we won’t be perfect, we are deeply committed to practicing and growing in this theme together.
At times you may see an employee wearing a t-shirt with the question- ask me why I am unreasonable – I would encourage you to do so! If you see an operations staff member demonstrating Unreasonable Hospitality and would like to have the division celebrate it, please email us at operations@messiah.edu. Throughout the year, we will recognize our staff at two special events.
With gratitude,
Kathie Shafer
Vice President of Operations
