The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

Psalms 9:9-10

Messiah University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents Nunsense

Messiah University’s Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to present the musical comedy Nunsense, in Poorman Black Box Theater, as our first production of the 2025-2026 season!

Nunsense

Book, music and lyrics by Dan Goggin

Directed by Ed Cohn

Musical direction by Caleb Stelle

*Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. special school series performance

Recommended for high school audiences

Poorman Black Box Theater, Climenhaga Building

The Little Sisters of Hoboken, residents of Mt. St. Helens Convent and teachers at the school, have a problem. It seems Sister Julia (Child of God) has accidentally killed off 52 sisters with a botulism-laced soup. But even worse, the remaining nuns only had enough cash to bury 48 of the dearly departed; the other four are in the freezer. The Little Sisters must raise money for a proper burial before the health inspector comes!

The nuns, written affectionately by Goggin, a lifelong devout Catholic, and portrayed with equal joy, are depicted as people who had lives before their decisions to enter the convent.  Their identities, who they are now and who they have been, are key, especially considering one nun who does not remember her past life due to an accident!  One wanted to be a star, another wanted to be a ballet dancer.  Yet they all gave up those dreams and devoted themselves to the Church.

Estimated run time: 2 hours and 10 minutes, including one 10- minute intermission.

Tickets: $15—Adults; $12—MU students (w/ID), MU employees (w/ID), youth (under 18) and seniors (60+) Tickets can be purchased online at messiah.edu/tickets, by phone at 717-691-6036, or at the door as available. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.

NUNSENSE is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. www.concordtheatricals.com

Reconciling Order and Disorder: Panel Discussion on Erik Varden’s Chastity
Wednesday, Oct. 15, 5-6 p.m., Boyer 131.

The Christian writer Erik Varden writes: “The way to order, for most of us, goes through disorder; to try to sidestep it is to risk sidestepping life.” What does this mean? How might order and disorder be reconciled in this way? A panel of Messiah alums and faculty invite you to participate in a conversation about these other important questions raised by Erik Varden in his book Chastity: Reconciliation of the Senses. Varden’s is one of the most thought-provoking Christian books published in recent years. It’s at the same time profound and quite practical for any Christian seeking to the follow the path of discipleship. Come and join in the conversation about the book with Scott Endicott (’13), Christine Bye (’21), Grant Holbrook, Christine Perrin and Jim LaGrand. Open to all members of the university community and the public. Part of the University Honors Program’s series this year on the theme of reconciliation.
