Promotion of Ruth Nutt
I am pleased to announce the promotion of Ruth Nutt to the role of director of educational operations. Ruth’s contributions over the past twelve years in various roles in the Office of the Provost—most recently as executive coordinator for the Office of the Provost—have been outstanding. This change in title reflects her leadership, expertise and increased responsibilities in the Office of the Provost and educational area. During her tenure at Messiah, Ruth has become an experienced and respected colleague. I’m so pleased to work with her in the Office of the Provost. Please join me in congratulating her!

Moroz presented at Shevchenko Workshop in Ukrainian Studies in New York
Oksana Moroz, assistant professor of English, was invited to present at an inaugural Shevchenko Workshop in Ukrainian Studies organized by Shevchenko Scientific Society of America. Her research study “Performing Gender and Redefining Identity in Wartime Ukraine” explored narratives of a male in-service English language teacher in Ukraine, focusing on his experiences before the full-scale invasion and during the ongoing war. It highlights the teacher’s journey of constructing, performing, and negotiating multidimensional identities across different workplaces, with gender performativity playing a central role.

AROUND CAMPUS
Operations division’s focus on unreasonable hospitality
The Department of Safety recently hosted its annual Safety Day as part of October’s campus safety awareness initiative. The event aimed to equip students with practical tools to protect themselves and others, while connecting them with local and campus safety resources. Students had the opportunity to meet first responders from the Upper Allen Police Department, the Cumberland County Special Response Team (SRT), the Upper Allen Fire Department, the 911 Dispatch Center, and Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland and Perry County. On-campus participants included the fire and safety systems coordinator, campus and building services, the title IX coordinator, and Messiah’s campus confidential resource.
Safety Day fosters student empowerment by helping them build awareness, take proactive steps to stay safe both on and off campus, and access vital support when needed. Student education extends beyond academics, and we strive to demonstrate unreasonable hospitality by equipping students with confidence and agency to speak up for themselves and others.
A heartfelt thank you to all who participated and to the students who stopped by to learn, ask questions and engage in building a safer campus community.

Ethics Challenge held at Messiah University
Messiah University’s Department of Business and the American Marketing Association of Central Pennsylvania recently held the inaugural Mindful Marketing Ethics Challenge – one of the first-ever collegiate case contests dedicated to marketing ethics. Eight teams from four universities participated in the competition. A panel of accomplished marketing practitioners judged teams’ 1,500-word written responses to the ethics case, focused on influencer marketing, as well as their five-minute oral presentations at the competition finale held at Messiah University on Oct. 1. The top three teams received $500 for 1st place, $300 for 2nd place, and $200 for 3rd place. Following the presentations there was an open discussion of the case, food and networking. Those interested can read the ethics case and winning written response and more about the competition’s backstory and broader impact. After creating Mindful Marketing in 2014, professor of marketing David Hagenbuch envisioned a collegiate ethics competition as a unique way of encouraging more ethical marketing.
