Todd Goranson, professor of music, was appointed president of the Christian Performing Artists’ Fellowship and The MasterWorks Festival on Oct. 1. CPAF is an international non-profit arts organization that hosts North America’s largest Christian performing arts festival for orchestra, piano, choral and vocal, theater, and film making students aged 14-30.
Seven students from biological sciences and chemistry and biochemistry (Danielle Delp, Krysta Goldbach, Emily Isaga, Rebekah Jones, Mark Lauria, Ashlee Leib and Justin Sweitzer) accompanied Dr. Larry Mylin and Dr. John Harms to Penn StateCollege of Medicine on Wednesday, Oct. 25. There, they had the opportunity to listen to a seminar presentation by Dr. Peter C. Doherty, 1996 co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering how recognition of virus components by immune T cells is controlled by the genetics of the infected individual. The students were especially delighted by the opportunity to talk personally with Doherty after the seminar about Messiah College and our science program. In his seminar presentation, Doherty talked about topics that relate closely to research currently being conducted on our campus in the laboratories of Mylin and Harms.

Important reminder to faculty – 2018 J-Term and spring semester work submission deadlines set
Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2018 J-Term and spring semester work submission deadlines have been set. Please coordinate your needs for your courses with the deadline dates located on the ITS blog at the following link: http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/7810
Procedure review:
- Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by the administrative assistant to ITS (Diane Hunsinger) approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack in College Press.
- Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_material. The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
- It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager at the Campus Store and Textbook Express.
- VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

Accounts Payable requisition to payment
Accounts Payable has received an overload of quick turnaround payment requests. Our expectations are that the campus community is allowing 1-2 weeks for requisition to check processing time. We have high volumes of data to process and cannot meet the 1-3 day payment turnaround times requested. Please plan your check needs accordingly. We understand that urgent situation arise at times and these are handled on a case-by-case basis. Your continued cooperation is greatly appreciated. Introducing a new Public Events Calendar on messiah.edu
The Office of Marketing and Communications and the Office of Conference and Event Services have collaborated to develop a new online Public Events Calendar on the College’s website at www.messiah.edu/events. The new calendar is easier to navigate, searchable, filterable and integrates with the events module of Jadu, the College’s web content management system (CMS).
What types of events are posted on the new calendar?
The primary audience for the new online calendar is prospective students and other off-campus community members. Events posted on the Public Events Calendar should meet the following criteria:
• Must have already been approved and room reserved through the Office of Conference and Event Services or other appropriate campus events protocol;
• Must be open to the general public (would not include private, by-invitation events or events designed for primarily student or employee audiences);
• Promotes a cultural, educational or recreational benefit to the community;
• Must be sponsored by an official Messiah College entity (student, academic or administrative);
• Events can be either free or paid admission.
How can I request my campus event be added to the new calendar?
Moving forward, campus event planners will be able to request that their event be added to the new Public Events Calendar (if it meets the above criteria) via an online form they will receive during the room reservation process. Or, if you already have an approved public event for the 2017-18 academic year, and would like to request that it be added to the new calendar, you may submit your request at https://www.messiah.edu/event-request.
Free showing of Charlotte’s Web
Come to Parmer Cinema on Sunday, Nov. 5 from 2-4 p.m. for a free showing of the classic Charlotte’s Web. A number of families from Downey Elementary School will be in attendance and all Messiah employees and families are invited to enjoy the movie and make them feel welcome on campus! See you there!
Geisinger Holy Spirit and Messiah College School of Graduate Studies to offer “Partners in Caring” speaker series; first one held Nov. 13
Geisinger Holy Spirit and the Messiah College School of Graduate Studies have partnered to present the “Partners in Caring” Speaker Series, designed to address relevant health and quality of life issues facing residents of south central Pennsylvania. The two entities are excited to work together in their efforts to expand their reach to a broader audience and educate the residents of south central Pennsylvania about the future of healthcare. This Speaker Series is open to the public and will prove to be beneficial to a diverse audience of students from both undergraduate and graduate programs.
The first session, a free community forum on Geisinger’s MyCode Community Health Initiative, will be held Monday, Nov. 13, from 7-8:30 p.m. in Messiah College’s Hostetter Chapel.
MyCode collects and analyzes genetic information sequenced from DNA in small amounts of blood given by participating patients. Genetic sequencing, which reads the genes in a person’s genome, finds differences in individual genes. Some of these differences can increase risk for certain medical conditions. Others are helpful, providing protection from disease.
Andy Faucett, director of policy and education at Geisinger, will provide more information about how the MyCode Community Health Initiative, one of the largest research projects of its kind in the world, is advancing the science of precision health and directly affecting the lives of Pennsylvania residents. From autism to heart disease, genetic research is helping us to better understand our personalized risks, and shows promise in helping us more effectively treat disease in the future.

United Way Employee Pledge drive launched!
The annual Employee Pledge Drive launched this week and will run through Friday, Nov. 17.
Some of the most pressing needs in our region are disparities in school readiness and achievement. Research shows that high-quality pre-kindergarten programs increase a child’s chances of succeeding in school. By donating to the United Way of the Capital Region (UWCR) during the pledge drive, you can support the School Readiness project, which employs early education liaisons who work with schools to tailor approaches to help prepare children for kindergarten.

Holiday Open House at The Oakes Museum of Natural History
