Dr. Tina Keller’s article, “Story Shaping Ideology: Majoritarian Stories of English Learners” was recently published as a chapter in the book “Teaching Practices and Language Ideologies for Multilingual Classrooms” (Chapter 1).
Using interviews, artifacts, email correspondences and lesson plans collected from six white, female, preservice teachers during their student teaching, this chapter focuses on the stories that shaped their ideologies of the emergent bilingual children in their classrooms. The findings indicate the preservice teachers, while having diverse lived experiences, held some common majoritarian stories concerning English learners. In addition to those majoritarian stories already established in the field, there were three additional stories uncovered in this study that significantly influenced the ideologies of emergent bilingual students. The chapter concludes by encouraging teacher educators to unpack story and use it as a vehicle for addressing teacher ideology of emergent bilingual students.

Dr. Brenda Elliott, assistant professor of nursing and coordinator of the MSN, CAGS, and RN-BSN programs, presented with her colleagues at the Sigma Theta Tau International 46th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, held Nov. 6-10, 2021. Their presentation, titled “Veterans in nursing education: Evidence-based strategies to enhance learning and support transition” was a synthesis of two studies conducted by the research team.

Pennsylvania native Toni Marie Palmertree is a soprano praised for her tender, expressive voice (San Francisco Examiner). She has been engaged to sing major roles with leading opera companies in the United States, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera and the San Francisco Opera. In this concert, Toni Marie Palmertree will perform favorites for soprano and orchestra with the Messiah University Symphony Orchestra.

Graduate Enrollment personnel updates
This fall the School of Graduate Studies has restructured to ensure that we are prepared to meet current and future enrollment goals:
Leah Smock has recently been promoted to associate director of enrollment for graduate studies and adult education. Leah will collaborate with enrollment counselors, program directors and undergraduate as she leads Early Assurance and Accelerated Program recruitment efforts. She will also oversee the use of Centralized Application Systems (athletic training, dietetics, occupational therapy and physical therapy). In addition to these new areas of responsibilities she will continue to recruit new students for the Graduate Program in Counseling.
Leah Conner moves from the Registrar’s Office back to Graduate Enrollment. Leah will serve as the assistant director of enrollment for graduate studies and adult education. In this newly expanded role, Leah will serve as the technical lead for the graduate instance of SLATE, Messiah’s CRM system that tracks student inquiries and applications. In addition to this important technical role, Leah will recruit for the Higher Education Program and the Dietetic Internship.
Carly Rippeon, a May 2021 HDFS Messiah alum, and former student work-study in admissions, joins the SGS enrollment team as a full-time graduate enrollment counselor. Carly will be recruiting for the Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Science in Athletic Training degrees.
Maranda Monroe will be joining the SGS enrollment team as a full-time graduate enrollment counselor on Nov. 29. Maranda will be recruiting for Graduate Education Programs, Graduate Music Programs and the Master of Occupational Therapy Program. Maranda will be transitioning from a full-time role in public school education and is on track to complete the Messiah M.A. in higher education degree in May of 2022.

Call for Nominations for 2022 – The Class of 1964 Carlton Wittlinger Prize and The Boyer Legacy Award
All educators at Messiah University are invited to nominate candidates for the
Class of 1964 Wittlinger Prize and the Boyer Legacy Award.
These two awards are presented annually by the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist, and Wesleyan Studies and the Ernest L. Boyer Center, respectively, to recognize emerging student leaders who embody particular ideals. The Wittlinger Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Carlton O. Wittlinger’s (Class of 1935) qualities of persistence and unselfish dedication. Similarly, the Boyer Legacy Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Ernest L. Boyer’s (Class of 1948) ardent emphasis that leadership is grounded in service.
Eligible candidates must be juniors with the highest academic promise, including a minimum 3.5 GPA, strong character, integrity and a commitment to service. There is no restriction as to the major of the recipient.
Nominations should include the student’s name and a brief statement (no more than 200 words) explaining why the student merits the honor. Students may be nominated for either or both awards.
Both awards carry a cash prize of $1,000 each.
The Wittlinger Award recipient will be recognized during the January 2022 Wittlinger Chapel Series; the Boyer Award recipient will be recognized at the Fall 2022 Teacher Education/Boyer Center Awards Ceremony.

APHS Conference research presentations
The Applied Health Science major sent four students to present their research projects at the 2021 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The conference attracted over 600 physicians, researchers, clinicians and practitioners from a seven-state region. The students, faculty mentors and projects are listed below:

NEEDED – men (tenors and basses) to sing in the ensemble of the Spring Opera Production!
Through the Dept. of Theatre and Dance, the spring MainStage production will be
THE YEOMAN OF THE GUARD by Gilbert and Sullivan.
WHAT: tenors and basses, of any age, with some vocal ability and music reading ability. NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE or OPERA SAVVY NEEDED! Just the willingness to sing, learn and have fun!
WHEN: Ensemble rehearsals will be on Monday evenings, starting Feb. 21 through March 25.
March 28 – April 6 will be work-throughs/run-throughs/tech and dress rehearsals. Performances will be April 7, 8, 9, and 10. That’s basically it!
WHERE: rehearsals will be in the Climenhaga building (Miller Theater) and performances will also be in Miller Theater.
WHY: Because it will be fun – performing in a theatrical production with orchestra and full sets and costumes! And if you’ve never sung in an opera before, this is your chance!
