Business Department professor Keith Quesenberry’s research paper “Time Is on Story’s Side: Story Development Impacts Daily Shares of Viral Advertising Videos” has been accepted to be presented at the annual Society of Business, Industry, and Economics academic conference in April. A continuation of previous storytelling research with Michael Coolsen, professor of marketing at Shippensburg University, it expands previous analysis of over 100 YouTube viral ad videos that found more fully developed stories on a 0 to 5 act drama scale increased total shares and views. This additional regression analysis found a sharper decline in shares for videos that tell a less developed story over a 23-day period indicating that viral advertising videos are shared for a longer time, or stay viral longer, with a story.

Emerson Powery, interim dean of the School of Arts, Culture and Society and professor of Biblical Studies, has been working on a multi-year project of co-editing the upcoming New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition of the Bible called The Westminster Study Bible. This edition includes interpretive materials from over eighty leading biblical experts (including Messiah’s Rebecca Harris and Brian Smith) who, as teachers in a variety of educational settings, are sensitive to how the biblical texts have been received, what their cultural and social consequences have been, and how readers might hear them now in multiple contexts. Damian Savarino, bass, professor of music, recently performed the bass-baritone solos in Gabriel Fauré’s REQUIEM with the Connecticut Choral Society. Under the baton of Maestro Eric Dale Knapp, Savarino was joined by soprano soloist, Francesca Federico.

Messiah cybersecurity competition team wins third place!
On Jan. 20, the Messiah University cybersecurity competition team placed 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition! They will be advancing to compete in the regional competition in March.
The competition was an “inherit and defend” style event. Teams were given a simulated business production environment and had to harden the systems quickly before the attackers tried to break in. In addition to securing systems the team functioned as a legitimate business, responding to tasks from the C-suite and keeping all systems online. Throughout the competition the most impressive thing that Messiah’s teams did well was remain calm under pressure and communicated with each other.
This was Messiah University’s second year participating in the competition. The senior team was comprised of Raymond Truex (captain), Grace Taylor, Aidan Hubley, Carolina Hatch, Brandan Snook, and Christopher Copeland. The first-year team was comprised of Eli Kalmbacher (captain), Austin King, Aiden Morris, and Ryan Scannell. Both teams were coached by David Bibighaus.
Placing 3rd out of 24 teams is an exciting achievement for the team. They are excited to return to the regionals in March for the second year in a row and will continue preparing for the next competition.

The Living Library: Many Stories, One Community
The Living Library: Many Stories, One Community (formerly the Human Library Project) is where Messiah students, faculty and staff become open books, sharing their personal stories with readers. The Living Library is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Living Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers.
Please consider participating as a “book” in the Living Library at the Murray Library on Wednesday, April 10. As a living book, you would be sharing your story with others in the Messiah University community in a moderated 25 minute session.

Messiah University to Host the 99th Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science April 12 – 14
Messiah University will host the 99th Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science (PAS) over the weekend of April 12 – 14. Approximately 250 students and faculty from educational institutions across Pennsylvania will visit campus to share about research conducted in a variety of areas of life and physical sciences in oral and poster presentations. David B. Olsen (’83) will deliver a keynote address following the Saturday evening banquet describing work of Merck and collaborating scientists to identify and characterize drugs that can be used to combat malaria. Olsen will also share career insights in a Saturday lunchtime panel aimed at students considering science careers in industry. We encourage Messiah students (and faculty) to register to attend and present at the conference. Non-presenting Messiah students and faculty may attend oral and poster presentations free of charge, but must also register in advance.
