Todd Goranson, DMA, RN, professor of music, was a concerto soloist with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of John Devlin, on Sept. 29 at the Capitol Theatre in Wheeling, West Virginia. Todd performed Escapades for Alto Saxophone with Orchestra, a three-movement concerto by John Williams.
Todd presented a concert on soprano saxophone with the Junction Saxophone Quartet on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. This concert included a world premiere performance of “Five Pictures from Manchester” by noted Swedish composer Mattias Arveheim, and the concert additionally featured Messiah alumni Tim Puglio and Dr. Amanda Heim.
On Oct. 7-9, Todd held a guest residency at Utah Valley University’s Department of Music in Orem, Utah. During his residency, he gave clinics on musicians’ mental health and performance anxiety to music majors at UVU as well as the music students of Cedar Valley High School (SLC), rehearsed the UVU Jazz Orchestra as guest conductor, guest lectured for the instrumental methods course, and performed as soloist on “Music from Catch Me If You Can” for Alto Saxophone and Wind Band with the UVU Wind Symphony in concert on Oct. at the Noorda Center for the Performing Arts.

After 28 years of excellent service at Messiah, Carol Wickey, administrative assistant to the Teacher Education Program, is retiring. During her time at Messiah, Carol has helped thousands of students enter, navigate and successfully complete our teacher certification programs. Her efficient procedures, knowledge of Messiah and collegial connections across campus allowed her to serve teacher education students and faculty well. A retirement drop-in will take place on Monday, Oct. 28 between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. outside Boyer 414. Come stop by Carol’s office to wish her well!

Passport Service Day
Are you planning to travel? Do you, your spouse or children need a passport?
Come by Eisenhower Commons on Thursday, Oct. 31 for Passport Service Day!
Representatives from the Cumberland County Court House will be on campus outside the Falcon between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to process NEW passport applications. Passport photo services will also be available.
Applicants need to bring the following documents to apply for a passport:
1. Completed application (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport.html)
2. Original birth certificate and a photocopy of birth certificate
3. Driver’s license and a photocopy of driver’s license (Copy of both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page)
4. Non-PA residents also need to bring their Messiah ID and a photocopy of their ID
5. Fees:
– $130 check or money order, written to the U.S. Department of State
– $35 cash or check, written to the Prothonotary’s Office
– If passport photos are needed: $10 cash or check, written to Messiah University

Friends of Murray Library annual dinner and program
You may know that the Murray Library serves as an important resource to help prepare our community for lives of service, leadership and reconciliation in church and society. However, you may not know that Friends of Murray Library supports this work each year by hosting an Annual Dinner where we recognize important student research and hear from literacy champions. This year we are featuring library experts and informed practitioners championing literacy in different contexts like higher education, public community libraries, and in K-12 public schools.
You are invited to join us on Friday, Nov. 8 from 6-8:30 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel for our 22nd Annual Dinner, catered by Two Bridges Catering, and Public Program. We are delighted to welcome a moderated plenary panel of literacy experts who will explore the theme of “Transitions in Literacy” – specifically what it means to be literate today, the future of literacy, and the ways libraries can come together with our communities to develop literacy skills for people of all ages.
Our moderator will be Sarah Fischer, Messiah University associate professor of literacy education. The panelists for the evening include Ryan McCrory, executive director of the Dauphin County Library System; Janet Vogel, director of the Murray Library at Messiah University; and Sarah George, library department coordinator at Mechanicsburg School District and librarian at three of the district’s elementary buildings.
We also hope you will join us in presenting President Kim Phipps with an honorary lifetime membership. As you may know, President Phipps has been a champion of Murray Library over her 27 years at Messiah and will be retiring following the end of the 2024-2025 academic year. In addition to recognizing President Phipps, our library student research grant awardee, Michael Azar, will present his research. Michael will graduate in 2025 with a B.S. in biology (biomedical concentration) and B.A. in music (keyboard composition).

2024 American Democracy Lecture
Please join us for the 2024 American Democracy Lecture, featuring Dr. Morris Fiorina’s lecture on “An Era of Unstable Majorities Continues.”
The United States is currently experiencing an historically unprecedented period of electoral instability. In this talk, Dr. Fiorina will discuss how current times contrast with earlier periods in American electoral history. He will share how the sorting of the two parties into ideologically opposing organizations does not well represent the larger electorate. The result: the inability of either party to forge lasting majorities that can make significant progress on the problems our country faces.
